Talking Earthbound!

I just finished this excellent SNES game for the third time. It's very silly at first, but once you get past the initial impression of "Oh god, a Peanuts RPG" (actual quote from one of my friends), it gets really good. It has some really funny dialog, weird enemies (e.g., "Worthless Protoplasm", "New Age Retro Hippie") and freaky characters. The music and the intentionally simplistic yet colorful graphics are unmatched by anything I've played yet.

I think it's kinda underrated, and I wish that more people had played it.

Earthbound is a pretty trippy game.

I remember when Thwyter first showed me the package it came in ... hugely oversized, bright yellow, with a picture of a Starman (the one from EB, not Mario) on it. It came with its own players guide! Way cool :3

If I recall correctly, I remember funky advertising stating "This game stinks!" that was on a page of various gross scratch 'n sniff things. Earthbound certainly would have stunk if we could have smelled all the gross enemies. Funky creatures, items, and people abound ... I really, really wish Earthbound 64 hadn't been cancelled. I can only hope a sequel finds its way to Gamecube ... I can hardly wait to bash more spiteful crows and extra cranky old ladies with a baseball bat until they become tame.

Eh, I guess you either get it or you don't. Especially if you have a Sephiroth avatar. :P

Story's pretty basic; group of kids have to save the world from an evil being named Giygas. It's not so much the story, but it's the dialog and bizarre situations they put you through. One of the towns is full of brainwashed cultists that have painted everything blue. In another town, you have to fight hordes of zombies and poltergeist trash cans. *_* And then there's Saturn Valley... full of Mr. Saturn... lots and lots of them.

sephiroth had a wonderful sense of humour. he was always laughing as he punctured holes in his foes . . . . .

anyways, i guess i never really found games with a very . . .. . . . let's say "funky" median to be very appealing. to me earthbound =

I think it's really cool when RPG developers break out of the standard mold (and/or take crack) and make something like Earthbound. It's a refreshing break from all the Square-style angsty drama, prettyboys, and skanky hos that the genre is plagued with.

skanky-hos . . . . . .

i guess ffx-2 could be considered a little funky and that was enjoyable . . . . at least for me. it isn't that i dislike funkyness it is that games based around funkyness usually get annoying. perhaps earthbound could get better i may have to give it another chance.

It was a little bit of work to get into it, but with enemies like 'scalding hot coffee' and 'unassuming local guy,' it was hard to not giggle my way all through it.

I completely lost my willing suspention of disbelief near the start of the game. It ruined itself for me, I found. I watched my brother play the rest of it . . . but I couldn't get back into it.

Although I enjoy Ness as a Smash Bros. character!

heh i once owned earthbout but alas it was stolen along with my snes and my game collection (i still miss my Mana) and yes i loved the game it is pretty goofy with enemys like scalding coffee and cranky old ladies or angry firehydrants, and even odder bosses like barf, and later puke, mr saturn jsut own but it seems either you love teh game or you hate it as i have yet to see anyone indifferent about it, i found you practicaly need that damn guide just for the area maps the game is HUGE!

btw my favorite thing was cats, food cake, i cant remember waht i named my dog uh teh girl was jenny (yes i know very orignal) the nerd was pinky (long story) and the asain kid i think i left default cause i cant seem to remember a name for him :P

I think the default name for the asian-esque kid was Poo. At least, that's what he always was in my game. I can't remember anyone else's name from most of my plays through.

Poo was correct. I played it on rental but someone broke the game when I got to the ghost town. Never played it since.

Earthbound was an awesome game! Ness and the Mr. Saturns were cool too and I liked running into the band "The Runaway 5" I think they were called. If I ever become a high game designer, I hope to make a game at least as trippy if not more than Earthbound.

Oh Yeah The Paparazzi guy in the top hat was freaky!
