Some games don't have cheats, only walkthroughs so I'd rather not use either.
I'll try my best with a game, then I'll probably get angry with it, THEN I'll cheat. :)
I quite like the idea of some games where you have to complete it once before any cheats can be activated even if you know the cheat codes. :p
And now that this has been moved to right place...
Nope, I don't cheat. I play atleast couple times the game through before checking out what I may have missed, and mess with cheats. Of course, if I have been stuck on some game too damn long, I will probably go and hunt down some advice from somewhere.

i usually don't cheat, but i don't hold any moral objection to it... if i cheat, it's only because cheating is fun (rather than for the purpose of winning, that is).
i was intending to hack conquer online, but i ended up getting too preoccupied with other things... i'll get back on it before fall semester, i think...

I am much against cheating in most games, however some games I am for it. Example: cheating in an RPG, rarely if ever do I see a suitable need for it. However, cheating in a game like GTA3, now that adds to the enjoyment. Flying cars, all guns, weeeeeee!! :D

:D The Boy and I usually don't seek out cheats, codes, or secrets until after we've beaten a game - or on the rare occasion that we get stuck. Once you've beaten a game, codes and glitches and the like are perfectly fine - I see them as another way to add to the lifespan of that particular game.
:finger: However, cheating in any way during multiplayer games, be they sports titles, fps, rts, or whatever, is extremely lame. Only the bottom feeders need to cheat to win. :shame:

I prefer to use cheat codes once I have completed the game without them (Duke Nukem 3D was so cool whith cheat codes on ^^).
However, if I'm stuck for too long in a game, I tend to peek into a walkthrough to get me out of the situation. That would be the same if you talked about the game with a friend who has already completed it... Just a piece of advice :spin:

I won't comment on that SD but for me I will only cheat if it has gotten to a point that it is not fun to play the game as it too hard or too time comsuming. take Ninja gaiden, it is hard but if you do the right thing you will get through an area. Walkthroughs are the same as cheating but with two differences: you have to have the skills to do what the walkthrough ask for and you can flip to the part that you are having issues with and resolve it and then put it away.

I used the Guybrush Threepwood cheat on my Indiana Jones game so I could use a chicken thingy....does that count? :D
If my memory serves me the cheat was something like "Iwannabeapirate"

I cheat only when I've played the game enough and just want a few kicks, or when I'm feeling lazy. And even then I make a copy of my gamesave before I cheat, so that I can rape the game on one of them and play it the way it was meant to be played on the other. That way I don't lose sleep feeling like a cheapass.

Well I'm basicly against cheating, unless I'm bored on a rainy day, and I've beaten the game. As for walkthrough, I really don't like using them, unless it's 3:00AM in the morning and I'm too tired to think any harder!
I'm mainly against cheating because of games like Ragnarok online, where there used to not be enough GMs ~_~;

:D Hell, if on Contra you mean the continuation or ammo codes, or whatever they were, you almost had to use them. Or at least, I did when I was little. ;)

Given that I rarely beat a game at all, I can't say that I never cheat without beating the game first. Still, I don't cheat very often. When I do, it's because I just want to fly through the game for the story. I do, however, use walkthroughs sometimes. I never really saw them as cheating; I've always seen them as help when you're really frustrated and about to give up and play something really easy just to comfort yourself.

to me, checking a walkthrough when you're stuck in a game is like asking someone else for the answer to a tough riddle... but that's just me.

I only use cheat codes after I have finished a game, or if its not meant to help, like a big head code or something. (their entertaining, Kind of, for awhile, not really) It's a matter of morals. Morals and the fact I can't be bothered to look them up. The one exception being GTA3 when the urge to fly the tank cannot be ignored any longer.
I mean who can say they don't do that.
Be honest.

I used to cheat all the time when I was a kid, back in the days when we used passwords to get to the next level... ah, the good old NES...
Now, I only cheat when I just want to have fun and screw around. I never use cheating to help me beat a game. I really only cheat just to have fun, not for the express purpose of getting ahead.

I generally make a practice of not cheating until I've beaten the game, and even then only if I am tired of wasting time leveling up, getting money, etc. The only game I can think of that I have cheated in without beating it would be Morrowind, because it takes way too long without regenerating HP and MP when you need it (I could buy the recovery potions, I just don't want to waste the time to do it.)

actually, i never broke down and flew the tank. i must be a dope....http://www.rpgamers.info/images/smilies/smash.gif
the closest i come to cheating is looking at a strategy guide or gamefaqs.com when i'm dead stuck somewhere. which, i guess by some, is cheating. but i'd rather get a quick boost of help than be stuck on the same part of a game for like eight months.

Usually after I have played a game through multiple times and think that I've done everything there is in the game. Often there is nothing new in those walkthroughs but there have been times when readin a walktrough has given info about a sidequest I have missed somehow. Actual cheatcodes I have not used.

I play the whole game twice once i start playing it. Then I apply cheat and codes to explore the extra juicy stuff in it. Then I put it into my CD/DVD ROM drive to extract the juice out of it and enjoy it for the rest of its life....Mwahahahahaha...

I cheat via glitches, never software.
For example, I have no problem doing the 255 item trick on Wild Arms or the vanish-doom trick on FFVI. I will never use a Game Genie or Game Shark if I can avoid it. The only game I have found a legitimate excuse for using one is Driver. The final level is almost impossible without cheat software (and even then it's hard as shit).

Do you all consider it cheating if someone uses, say, the "Power Penninsula" in FF One? You know the area NE of Prakova where the more powerful monsters [only in a small, two by two area] are, making it mush easier to level up and buy equiptment? Or is it just a quirky part of the game that can be exploited? Or was it put there on purpose?
Just wondering....
-bjp
I have no idea what you are talking about ;)
Cheating is when you use codes to get unlmited ammo or whatever. Game glitch explotations are always sort of grey area. It depends on the outcome of the exploit I guess. If there is a glitch in a game that you can use to get billions of cash, and you use it, it's cheating.
The scenario you talk about seems okay with me.

Only digging up this old thread 'cos I saw a Yahoo spider checking it out.
I only "cheat" to get things that cannot be unlocked any other way. Such as flying cars in GTA Vice City (fun), or animal ships in Wipeout, that kinda thing, although that's not really cheating. I always try finish the game once off my own back, then look through walkthroughs to find anything I missed first time round. If I can't finish it I usually leave it and come back to it much much later and try again. If I'm really really struggling I'll ask other people for advice and then maybe check a walkthrough.
Still, I find it takes all the fun out of it. I enjoy the sense of achievement (and often relief) when I get to the end of most games. :)
I only cheat on games after I've beaten them a few times ( and by cheat I mean using a gameshark ) it's fun to go through a game and relive the story without getting hung up on a specific boss.

Yeah I agree with Rai. It's fun to replay a game I've already beaten and be able to blow right through everything just so I can see the story play out.

I generally only cheat just to have fun, like using unlimited ammo or invincibility. Sometimes I'll do "reconnaissance" cheats, like revealing a certain area or surging ahead with the aforementioned invincibility or ammo cheats to see what's coming up so I'll be better prepared for it. But it's quite rare that I'll use cheats with the intention of having an unfair advantage in gameplay. In other words, I'll cheat to acquire knowledge, but not to make me stronger.
When it comes to old school games like ROMs, however, all bets are off. I'll save and restore states like there's no tomorrow. I don't know why...

06-22-2008, 02:17 PM
i've changed my mind about this since the last time i posted... >.>
first, a definition: cheating is anything that gives you an unfair advantage.
so that item dupe glitch you like so much? yeah, cheating, i'd say.
glitch exploits are a bit iffy in multiplayer games... on the one hand, every player can do it. but on the other hand, some players are capable of getting a bigger advantage than others.
let's take trick jumping in enemy territory for example. to summarize, there's a rounding error in ET that can allow a player to travel slightly but increasingly faster than the maximum sprinting speed if he's in the air. this leads players to jumping over enemy bases and huge walls and whatever else you can think of. it also allows players super human speed across certain areas of a map (or perhaps a whole map) if you get it just right.
anyway, i never really considered it cheating until now, but a player with a faster graphics card can accumulate more of the rounding error, allowing him to jump better.
but then again, the player with the better computer has an advantage regardless...
and then there's buying equipment and items and characters in MMORPG's... and nepotism... and... inheritance. >.>

Is powerbuilding in NWN cheating? :)
I'm too lazy to check my earlier posts, but I doubt anything has changed for me.
I generally try to finish the game on my own, but of course if there is something that I can't beat for whatever reason, a puzzle I can't figure out, and have been stuck in that spot for a while, I seek help. Most likely from FAQ.
Cheating to get an unfair advantage is just bad.
On the other hand, on some older games I emulate, I do use some cheats. I'm not as young as I used to be, and I don't have as much patience with games as I used to. Or it's possible that I still have the patience, but I just figure that it doesn't really matter anymore.

Hmmm, unfair advantage? So, if I cheat like mad, and still get trounced, it's not really cheating? :p
silverDistortioN
06-22-2008, 07:56 PM
no, because you'd still have an unfair advantage, you'd just also happen to have the even bigger disadvantage of being a noob. :P
it's worst of both worlds. >.>

Driver... the game's last level is pure hell without a code. There was one more game that I bought out of curiosity called "Rule of Rose". After playing that game for an hour, I put on cheat codes and finished it that very day. Apart from that, I like to finish my games first and then put in codes to see what I can pull out of it more than, I have already played.
