Hi everyone...new here and pretty new to FTPing. I could use a hand. I am attempting to connect and I was wondering, in my FTP client(FileZilla) I am having trouble connecting. I saw in some posts here that I should use 'Passive" mode for logging in. I am not sure what that means and if that is why I am having trouble connecting. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks...as I am a noob at this if you need more information from me just ask.

Well, normally Passive mode is enabled in FTP clients. If you still want to change the Passive settings then you can do so in Edit->Settings and then under the connection tree, select firewall settings and check or uncheck the Passive mode option to your requirements.

I remember Marona posting a very good tutorial on setting up an FTP server and connecting to it some time ago. Search for it and you'll have no troubles connecting.

O.K. the passive setting is not the issue. I am entering the ftp addresses listed on the site(i.e. 69.192.55.80) but I am receiving this error:
Transfer channel can't be opened. Reason: A connection attempt failed because the connected party did not properly respond after a period of time, or established connection failed because connected host has failed to respond.

Error: Could not retrieve directory listing

Any ideas?

If this is simply a bad ftp to connect to, could you direct me to a mirror?

Which FTP is it?> Half of them mirrors say they are up when they are down:( The mirrors are on the gamemusic section of this site.

I have a mirror also, you may request something. Look under Seifer's server >>Game Music Servers and Links (forumdisplay.php?f=5) in this forum.
My game music collection is not too diverse but I may have soemthing you want:)

and I cannot get rid of this bold for some reason

My server is down...you must request first;) from this list on POST 1 of my thread

I got the same error using filezilla on BluedragonX ftp. You must turn OFF passive mode.

Filezilla:

Edit>>settings>>Firewall settings>>uncheck passive mode ;)

I gotta come here more often.

Anyway, if anyone had more problems getting on my server in the past few days, that's because my IP address changed on me without me knowing till now. I was wondering why there was no one on the server the past couple of days.

Everything is fixed now. You just have to update bookmarks.

Bleh, my IP address changed on me again. Funny thing is that I don't remember having a dynamic IP. Anyway, I fixed it again so happy downloading.

Couldn't you get an account from http://www.no-ip.com/ and that little service which updates the dns automatically? Would save you the trouble of changing mirror info everytime your ip changes.

Here's the odd thing. The first change was just a normal Rogers yearly slight IP change.

The second one happened after moving my PC downstairs for a party last Saturday, and then back upstairs to its normal place in my room yesterday.

Anyway, I just did what you suggested, signed up for No-IP Free and updated my server info for the final time. Hopefully, I won't have to deal with any more BS for the time being.

However, there is still one piece of BS I hate dealing with. It's the fact that apparently nobody reads the overly long but incredibly important instructions in my server page. So I have to vent and shout at ppl right now.

:realmad: :realmad: :realmad: TURN OFF FRIGGIN' PASSIVE MODE IF YOU WANT TO GET ON MY SERVER!!!!:realmad: :realmad: :realmad:

Thank you.

Hehe. Yeah, no one reads, or they do but ignore it. I tried to do some visual guiding with colours on my mirror page, but so far it's passive 90% of the time. Sure, passive works on my server, but just not so well as active. Anyway, I hope the dns update service serves you well. :) My ip is static, but I use it anyway.
