I just wanted to explain how the user reputation system works, for those of you wondering. On every post, you will notice an icon that looks like this: http://205.209.144.11/forums/images/buttons/reputation.gif This is the leave reputation icon. If you click on it on one of your own posts, it will show you your reputation totals, however, if you click on it on someone elses, it will ask you to leave feedback about that post.

Now, you shouldn't go around leaving feedback about every post, just those that you strongly like/agree with, or disagree with/feel are wasteful.

Feedback that is written about posts you make are left in your "Options" panel, accessed using the link on the top menu. On the front page of your options panel should display your most recent 20 feedback comments, anonymously. (So don't fear being honest in your feedback, but don't be rude either, because as an admin I -can- see who left it :p). I recommend checking for reputation messages every so often, to see what people think of your posts.

What does reputation do for you? Well, did you ever wonder what that little green icon below your avatar was? It looks like this: http://205.209.144.11/forums/images/reputation/reputation_pos.gif

That is your reputation meter. It will increase as you gain reputation. You can gain points by others leaving good comments about you, and lose it in the opposite way. A user's comments only affect your reputation if they have made atleast 25 posts, so new users cannot affect others' reputations. Their comments are left, but that is all.

Each user has a "reputation power". The number of points you give to a user upon leaving feedback is based on your experience with our forums. For example, passing 25 posts for the first time awards you 1 reputation power. This allows you to start adding reputation to others. Other ways to increase your power include things such as.... every 365 days you are a user of these forums, you gain 1 power. Every 1000 postcount you have gives you 1 extra power. Etc. So, using myself as an example on the old forums, I was a member for 4 years, and had a postcount in the 4,000s. So every reputation I would leave would award 9 points, not 1. There are other ways to gain/lose reputation power, but those are for you to discover.

There are restrictions, that stop you from upping the reputation of your forum friends. You may only add reputation to the same user twice, if you have left atleast 5 reputation comments for others first. This stops people from just adding reputation on every post of their friends :p Reputation can be monitored in the admin panel, and if it seems to be being abused for this purpose, the offending user will be led to the same sort of penalties as rank abuse. Loss of all reputation powers, or potential account suspension.

The reputation system can be a lot of fun, and unlike rank, is not just based on how often you post, but how often people feel your posts are of good quality, and contribute to the forums. So next time you see a post you like or agree with, click the button and leave a comment! :)

...End of tutorial.

:p I just wanted to be sure everyone knew of this feature, so we can make full use of it. Its a great system, and allows you to drop anonymous hints to users who are posting badly as well. A quick, private nudge in the right direction could prove much help. Lets use this system wisely, and enjoy having piles of green dots below our names :p

Eventhough the system is anonymous, everyone who is going to use this, try not to sound like yourself when you add a comment :) For example, Silver and Giea are almost only ones who use =) smiley.

Couple questions. Is the feedback required, or can one just add to the repuation without a comment?

And does the reputation point start from 0?

Everyone starts with 10 reputation points, and 0 reputation power. They get 1 power for passing 25 posts. If you dont leave a comment, your vote does not count. You cannot modify someones' reputation without explaining why :p

Ok.

One additional question. Is it possible to see own reputation power anywhere? Points are under http://205.209.144.11/forums/images/buttons/reputation.gif but anyway to see the power I'm holding? I don't see it anywhere, and if you said it in the original post, I totally missed it.

Oh, a clarification to my last post... When I said that "try not to sound like yourself" doesn't mean that you should try sound like someone else either :) It would be evil to make reputation comments sound like someone else.

Of course, there is quite few users here who are recognizable via text, but just in case.

:D I don't think anyone can tell who sent "You are such a maroon!" ;)

You're power is not shown anywhere, thats top secret :p

Good to know, now I can stop searching for it :p

How will the reputation show? Right now everyone (except for the Admin account) has the green dot. Does the dot change colour, will there be more dots, or does it maybe grow in lenght when more or less reputation is gathered?

And while I'm at it, I'm assuming that regular users can't see other users reputation points, they can only see the dot, and the popup text "blaa blaa distinguished road" and the changes in these two things. Or am I correct to assume this?

Indeed, the little dot does change, in fact more dots come and join it. Also, that text that is shown while hovering over the dot changes as your reputation grows or drops.

Only you can see your actual reputation number, but seeing how only I know when each level of reputation happens, its just as misterious as ranks :p

Hooray for secrecy :) I think that's all the questions I have :) And I'm almost certain that no one else has any questions either, now that I have asked them :p

I just looked into the reputation system farther, and its not actually that big of a secret, so I will reveal this information about it.

Every green dot is equal to 100 points of positive reputation. Once you reach 5 green dots, you'll start earning bright green dots, which equal 200 reputation each. Maximum reputation is 1500, upon which your dots will not change further. It would look like so:
http://205.209.144.11/forums/images/reputation/reputation_pos.gifhttp://205.209.144.11/forums/images/reputation/reputation_pos.gifhttp://205.209.144.11/forums/images/reputation/reputation_pos.gifhttp://205.209.144.11/forums/images/reputation/reputation_pos.gifhttp://205.209.144.11/forums/images/reputation/reputation_pos.gifhttp://205.209.144.11/forums/images/reputation/reputation_highpos.gifhttp://205.209.144.11/forums/images/reputation/reputation_highpos.gifhttp://205.209.144.11/forums/images/reputation/reputation_highpos.gifhttp://205.209.144.11/forums/images/reputation/reputation_highpos.gifhttp://205.209.144.11/forums/images/reputation/reputation_highpos.gif

Also, dropping below 0 results in red dots, rather then green. Lets hope noone has to experience those.

The hover text over the reputation dots does not change in sync with the dots, it actually changes on a set schedule. Its kind off odd how they did it, but hopefully that clarifies it abit.

So, has anyone actually used this yet?

:D I got two and sent one on the opening of the boards, but all of those were sort of tests. Since then I've sent one for a post I thought was good. So far, I've refrained from sending any negative ones, even when I thought they were deserved. ;)

Kilu

I have sent out one (negative). Haven't got any.

i don't plan on using the reputation system... i just don't see the purpose of it other than to lower my self-esteem.

Zedie9

:D I plan to use it sparingly. For instance, any post I find to be especially insightful, especially funny, or just a really good post for that particular person, I'll send positive feedback. A post would have to be pretty bad indeed for me to give out negative feedback, though. :spin:

I have used it but the comment done by that person wasn't the reason why he got my vote :p

I should have read more carefully I guess. ANyway, he still gets the point and deserves it in my opinion. I plan to use to control the boards muhuhhahahah! :evillaugh:

I didn't think many people would use the feature, but its not worth the hassle of removing. Its small and out of the way, and if noone uses it, it means we all just have a cool dot below our name. :p

Plus, if a spammer comes along we can all vote him down to the evil red dot! :P

Kilu

Onoes, my reputation has had a hit :)

For some reason I get this feeling that people will more easily vote negatively than positively. Considering that most of the posts around here are more or less good, but then when a bad post comes around it stands out so much that people will easily vote on it. I personally haven't seen any post worth my good rate. You know, nothing that really stands out as "hey, that's an awesome post".

Bad posts are so much more easier to vote on.
Or atleast that's how I feel :)

:wonder: So... make an effort to reward good (or rather, better than average ;)) posts. I did. At least... I had been before the Great Darkness™... :amazed:

i agree completely with Kilu and will therefore abstain from voting either way.

i think.
