OK CHESS SIGN UP:
NAMES SO FAR IN THE DRAW:
GeosGaeno
Seifer Almasy (Me)
Locke
MangaChaos
Cyrano de Hero
Galthol
Epology
Evil Baz
SilverDistortion
We have minimum but would be good if we had more :)
-----
The games will consist of best of 3 (first to 2), the final will be best of 5. All entries closed on 20/05/06 and the games to begin 22/05/06. The draw diagram would have been added here by 20-21st May and then will be updated after matches.
I will add to the draw the person who was randomly selected to go first (i.e. be white), after that it alternates (obviously person going white first can potentially go white 2 out of 3 possible times in a best-of-3 match)
Obviously I wont be able to proove who beat who but I am guessing noone is going to cheat to lose :) On another note I hope we are all going to play fair, no using external help like programs, other people etc That would be pointless.
The games will take place on yahoo, I hope you all have yahoo accounts, if not we find some other way. The reason yahoo is better is that game history can be saved and I want to post the game move history here
Some people are telling me that they cannot join because they do not have solid internet access. Surely this isnt too much of an obstacle? Its not as if theres a very fast deadline of when a match has to finish? ;) In any case...
also geosgaeno has made a nice table for us and I have edited a mediocre quality chess trophy :) Whose name will be added to it though?

I have just sent a load of invitations via private message to practicly all regulars (including non regular like our elusive "slacker" admin)
Hopefully we will get some responses and 25%+ of them will join :)

Post 1 will be the main update page and wheer the draw will be shown :)

Just a note about Yahoo!: You may not be able to play it on public computers. It uses a java program that needs to be downloaded, and I've never seen it on a public computer before. I don't know the exact details, just take a look at the games page.
Looks good so far. Even though we have enough people, we need more, though!
SeymourGuado
05-13-2006, 03:39 PM
yeah java does need to be installed :) how many of us are using public comps>?
Geosgaeno
05-14-2006, 05:10 AM
well im certainley not, i cant stand them, they never work at all and they need throwing off a high balcony
silverDistortioN
05-14-2006, 01:40 PM
I'm game (but I must admit, I am a bit rusty)
SeymourGuado
05-15-2006, 01:05 AM
I'm game (but I must admit, I am a bit rusty)Well I think you are 3-1 up on me (i could be wrong could be 3-0 haha) and I havent played proper in yonks either so we are in same boat.
Good play never truly leaves a person though and i sincerely hope I dont get you in round 1:)
Geosgaeno
05-15-2006, 07:32 AM
thats 9 people, looks like im gonna have to create a new tournement table
Locke
05-15-2006, 02:19 PM
Yeah, I'm on a public computer at work. If I'm going to be able to play it's gonna need to be on something that runs with Flash (though we do have Java. If anybody has any idea of what we're going to be running then I should be able to test the program at work and find a computer that it'll run off of)
SeymourGuado
05-15-2006, 06:57 PM
Well as long as the two people can find soemthing that works and isnt gonna die on them I guess its ok:)
We work it all out when the time arriveshttp://www.rpgamers.info/images/smilies/biggrin.gif
On another note, I will randomly choose the draw, I dont know hopw i will proove to you that its been fair but i guess you may just have to trust me?
Epology
05-16-2006, 08:03 AM
We will...there is no apparent reason for you to cheat.
SeymourGuado
05-16-2006, 04:49 PM
Well perhaps I will assign us all numbers in privare messages then get some non player like kilu to do a random draw...obviously this would be fairer than just taking my word for it but we'll see:)
Locke
05-16-2006, 07:30 PM
Meh, I'm not that concerned about fairness, especially off the bat. Nobody know's how good anybody is, so how could it be unfair?
SeymourGuado
05-16-2006, 07:35 PM
Well I dont wanna face silver I know how good he is in comparison, he can beat me 2 in 3 times atleast..well I fear him hahaha :)
nah I will do the damn draw, I am one of the fairest people on earth and i wont cheat:) still time to go til draw anyway:)
In other news, I played a game of chess with Silver yesterday, and lost.
SeymourGuado
05-19-2006, 09:10 AM
yeah he is pretty good....;) I am praying I meet him in the final to save ego:)
You sure you don't want to be added Kilu? More the merrier?
ALL ENTRIES CLOSED AT 18:00 BST (17 hours 20 minutes from latest edit time)
SeymourGuado
05-19-2006, 10:29 PM
The draw has been made, obviously if someone else joins now I will have to redo the entire thing.
Because I couldn't be bothered creating a small app that could draw us randomely I decided to set winamp (geosgaeno's idea) to best random then put our names in. Winamp then chose who plays who. Unfortunately becasue we have 9 people and not 8 or 16, the last 2 drawn have to play each other in order to go through to the last 8. Therefore 7 of us were drawn to be in the last 8 automatically. Luckily I was one:):):)
Details at 18:00 BST if noone else has joined by then, the draw is set.
SeymourGuado
05-20-2006, 11:15 AM
Draw added to post 1. REMEMBER TO READ POST 1 AND THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION
A few things to note:
1. I have added W and B to show who goes first in QF, this was decided by the first person randomly selected of the two players. The players must alternate after this point. (if you were white, next game you are black etc).
The person going first in new rounds will be revised each time.
2. A stalemate (draw) gives you 0.5 each like real chess. If a player is 1.5-1 say, the one who is on 1.5 only needs a draw to win a best of 3. In the event that a match becomes tied points will keep being added until 1 player has the highest score. This could potentially mean a score of infinity, somehow I doubt it but a score of say 5-4 ina best of 3 game is not beyond the realms of possibility. (In real chess if a draw occurs the match is simply drawn (and replayed?).
In any case we will just carry on into sudden death :)
3. Remember your match score and if you can save and post the game history. This is not a requirement but the match score is;)
4. Locke was the unluckiest person drawn followed shortly by Mangachaos. There was no way to decide upon who should occupy the two last playoff positions except to say the last 2 randomly drawn were put there:(
5. I suggest you PM your opponent and arrange details of when your match is played. There is no time limit for it finishing.
6. If you play individual games because of time restrictions PM me with the updated score:)
Any other questions feel free to ask.

Well, silverDistortioN and I had our match-up today. It was a fierce battle, but I managed to claim victory. Score was 2-0. Sorry, but I forgot to save the results for the first game, and the second results never got sent to my inbox for some reason.
Silver played very well and it was fun. I enjoyed the match.
Well, next match I'll make it a point to save the results. I promise! http://www.rpgamers.info/images/smilies/biggrin.gif
Also, silver and I were wondering: Who gets which color in the event of a tie breaker? Since both players have been each color, doesn't that pose a bit of a problem? White has the advantage over black usually, so that might tip the scales a bit in one player's favor...
SeymourGuado
05-22-2006, 04:59 PM
If that happens then both players have to come here and hopefully I will have figured out a nice way to decide it. It will probably be a random draw:( unless anyones got a better suggestion?
Congrats on your win Cyrano, now I am scared to death of you :( lol ;) To beat silver is no easy task

Im still waiting for Locke/MC to see who will be my opponent
Epology
05-24-2006, 11:06 AM
I really did reply to your second PM. To repeat it, I am currently working on getting my new Linux system to work. If there is a site we could play on, it'll be fine with me. :) Anything IM based won't really work since Gaim does not support any games from any IM, be it ICQ, Yahoo or others.
Geosgaeno
05-24-2006, 12:16 PM
Epology, go to this link
http://www.uploading.com/?get=7QPQPQFY (http://www.uploading.com/?get=7QPQPQFY)
and enter the 3 digit code and begin download, it will give a program called Max99 chess i believe, then we should be rockin and rolling!!!
SeymourGuado
05-24-2006, 12:20 PM
I have to sort all your problems out but I guess that is my job hehehe. I overslept last night so me and galthol missed our game. So at 6 AM tomorrow we should have my match completed :)
Edit: confession. I was the one who sent you the last PM from geosgaeno's account whilst he was snoozing in my flat. I was sure he would check his PM afterwards. sorry about that epology or should I say my appology epology? (ok bad joke :( ).

Well Galthol hadn't played in 1 year so it was a little unfair him playing me and all. Anyway game finished 2-0 to me. I will wait for all other games to finish before i play Cyrano.

Oh I am here, let me know if you finish one but not the others;)
baz sent me your moves up to about move 10-15, white had clearly a major advantage, however Baz was supposed to be white first so, if he manages to win the next game , he is white again:)

Looks like i have you Locke in next round, gimme a PM when your ready etc, also i take it you cant use Yahoo chess :(
so we shall use the one that you and Baz were using, also our times are different which could cause a problem, but, what the hell ;)
SeymourGuado
06-08-2006, 08:54 AM
I made a small program to decide who will be playing white first from now on but it didn't matter for locke and geosgaeno. Since Locke was black first and geosgano white, it is only fair locke goes white first against geo.
As for me and Cyrano I was the 1/2 lucky one this time:)
program was pretty easy, pascal :
randomize;
if (random(2)=1)then
begin
label1.caption:='Cyrano';
end
else
begin
label1.caption:='dlpb';
end;
The best I can come up with is, if you were white before, you are black this time. if both players were white or black before, the person who has won the most and conceeded the least games thus far is the one who will be white. If both of these are the same then it is a completely random draw:) In the final, regardless the colour will be chosen pending on the previous scores, the number of times that person has been white, then just randomly.
Which means if I get to the final, I am black first regardless.

The person in charge of the chart could always just roll some dice and decide that way. I'm sure the participants trust you ;)ahh it is true but I have to be sure they know I am not just saying "wee give me the white suckers" haha ;)
In any case, I am black next anway regardless due to the fairness of my over thought about system:)http://www.rpgamers.info/images/smilies/evilgrin.gif
In the end, being white when you are an amateur isn't really an advantage. To kasparov yes to DLPB....no.

I thoroughly enjoyed my 2 games with Cyrano, not because I won though...because they were nice games. Second game could have gone either way but for 1 trick I did that forced a mistake.
Cyrano played well, it is always good to play new people, sick of same old tactics day in day out.
I found Silver very hard 1 year ago...guess practice pays off afterall?
Bad luck Cyrano, but next time?
I await my opponent!

Good news is that I have found a nice tool to change Yahoo chess saves to PGN file language:) That way in the future we can save our games and rerun them using free chess programs. I can also add all games to 1 large file (not in the sense of file size) and then you can view every game that took place.
When we have a nother competition, maybe this year?> I will make this so;)
As long as you can save to PGN files its cool. I will put my final game with cyrano up here soon as an example, and also give links to the best pgn supported free chess program:)
SeymourGuado

SeymourGuado
06-22-2006, 05:17 PM
nor do I, I have just played against a computer application more than 15 times, and lost each and every time. I just don't understand fully how to end the game againsta computer....its the tactic that has to be changed when playing one.
Kasparov would tear this nasty bastard to pieces.
SeymourGuado
06-23-2006, 03:43 PM
well, so far 1-0 to me against Geo.
Should have gone to Geo. I made 1 huge mistake and lost a bishop for nothing, luckily I could recover and take his a few moves later. Then with the advantage at the end of the game to Geo he made 1 mistake and handed me back the advantage by losing a rook.
It goes to show you how fast a game can change with 1 mistake in chess at an amateur level.
SeymourGuado
07-03-2006, 08:57 PM
Well I am hoping to have this match done by Friday. Will contact Geo in PM

Cool, I wanna know how it ends up :D :p
SeymourGuado

It should end with me kicking his ass, the score is about 33-12 to me overall, and I am not happy he won that last one, and could easily now be 2-0 up. It is not acceptable and I will do my best to bury him
It is a game, but I take it more than seriouslyhttp://forums.rpgamers.net/images/smilies/wink.gif I am worried because of how bad I have played in this final but there is gonna be a change and he is going to get flattened

That was a good game but we both played rubbish....we made about 2 easy mistakes each, I almost lost queen. Could have gone either way with a little swing in luck.
Not really that happy cause I know I played silly. Good game though:)

3-1 to me. Geo was rusty after not playing for ages, I was ok. Could have swung had I made 1 disaster move at the end but overall pleased how I played.
Only problem was I gave geo black by accident.
Anyway, we got that out of the way finally!Well done and thanks to all who participated!

updated draw sheet on post 1
If we ever play again, we will play it with a time limit, 5 days to complete match and if not completed then disqualification or something. This has been a farce really considering the times it has taken lol 1 year 5 months
Good games!
