View Full Version : Which RPG will you buy next ?

It was my first thread then, it's my first thread now !
Star Ocean till the end of time and Shadow Hearts II are coming next month, and they're so gonna be in my collection ! :hungry:
What about you ?
wee...
I would probably buy Shadow Hearts 2, if I had played the first one :( FFXII is a safe bet for one of my future purchases. I don't really know what new games are coming though.
I would like to buy the first Shadow Hearts. But I'm a bit late on that. If Europe release gets a preorder campaign like US release (preorder and get the first game as a bonus), I would probably do it immediately.
Not that I have any money :(

The next RPG that I intend to get is going to be Fable. I may not buy it, but ...
I'll prolly buy some more D&D books next....
P.S.
Lance Alvein: Thats a good pic of me in your avatar :D

Money is a problem indeed. I've been doing well this past year in that matter though. (rather well I mean. still leave with 2 roomates...)
As for the other games, Suikoden IV and Wild Arms Alter Code F are a sure bet at the end of the year

Phantom Brave releases at the end of this month! Joy~~~
Lucky for me, Suikoden IV is going to be prereleased the day before my B-day :D ((Well that's the current date Gamestop is giving ~_~))

Well if I were to buy one I would defently buy the next installment of XenoSaga, I relly wanna play it. I also wanna get the 3 & 4 Installment of .Hack
There's alot of games out there I wanna try but if I were able to afford it those 3 would be on my list.

When I'll beat mutation and outbreak I'll surely bought dotHack Quarantine
Lucky 7

I still haven't beaten outbreak. For some reason my "increadible heavy blader, twin blader, and wavemaster combo of DOOM" isn't as effective as it once was. It's starting to feel like I'm pulling teeth when I fight.
I bought Disgaea late last month so I'm set for a good while. Besides, Armored Core Nexus is coming out next month and it's been far too long since the last time I played paintball.

I ahve Shadow Hearts 2 pre-ordered, as well as the Japanese release of Magna Carta: Crimson Stigmata. I usually don't buy Japanese games, but I've been wanting it for two years now, and with no confirmation that the US will even get it at all, I'm not taking any chances.

...¬_¬; The .hack// games start getting really redundant. I got through the firat three games in 2 to 3 days each ~_~ The only reason I haven't finished the last one, was I was getting pretty bored of looking for virus cores. You need WAY to many near the beginning of the 4th game.
Anyways, I have Phantom Brave reserved now :D; and I broke down and Reserved both((Yes both)) new Pokemon games due out next month.

I had a surplus because of the end of the second that is all that you do. I had to the second boss in Red because I had no weapons that could do Elemental damage. at the begining of the 3rd I was to weak to beat the one solo that you have, so I Stop playing and started with X-2 and got pissed at the "charlie's Angels" motif. I stopped playing it on the 3rd chapter.
My next one will more than likely be Xenosaga II or Jade Empire.

I managed to get only the cores I needed...and various Cores that I never seem to use. At the beginning of the 4th game you need far to many of the rare cores to do anything. ((Not rare as in boss drop rare...))

People still buy games? :)
I haven't had a lot of time for my console lately, I mainly sit at the PC these days. Maybe I'll get back into it once GT4 comes out in full swing :) As for RPGs, I haven't seen any that catch my fancy as of late.

It's time to bring back old threads ! :umbrella:

:) As I've said before (but know now with near certainty), Fable. My best friend bought it, beat it, loaned it out to another friend, and plans to sell it to me for cheaps. I can't think of another I'd buy sooner, unless it's Morrowind GotY Edition or Paper Mario 2. :bouncy:

I sorta want to get Star Ocean 3... but I'm not sure. I've heard more people say they dislike it than like it... but why follow the crowd, eh? I also am really pumped to get Jak III when it comes out. A question to anyone who has done this: Assuming one knows Japanese, Is it worth it to buy a game in japanese before it comes out anywhere else?
Zedie9
10-18-2004, 04:21 AM
:wonder: Assuming that I could speak/read Japanese, I would only buy an import if the game was either not being released domestically, or was no more expensive than the domestic version. Otherwise, nope. :bouncy:

There was a game that looked interesting once, but I can't remember the name. It was a platform game (I think thats what you call games like Mario, Jak and Daxter, banjo kazooie, etc.) about egypt. Like there was this one pharoah sphinx guy and a mummy also... Hm... it might have been called Sphinx. I don't know. I wanted Dark Cloud 2 for the longest time, but I forgot about THAT too. >_<

Can't buy a system for only one game, can I ? Still, I'm not interrested in game cube games, aside RE1 and Skies of Arcadia...
Maybe I'll buy Need for speed Underground 2 ! I loved the first one on playstation !
Get gamecube for RE4 :) I'm hyped about it. It looks to be awesome. When will Baten Kaitos be released in Europe btw?

A good question Kilu... but if it were to ship there, I recommend it.

Unfortunely there is no release Dat for Europe Yet but you need to cross your fingers (both of your hands and feets) so it goes to the europe hehehehehe
After listening so much Xenosaga sounds.. I really feel like playing this game. But I need to import it first, since there's no PAL version.. Its expensive (100€/50$)x2 well.. even If I have it on my table.. I wont be able to play it, since its highly forbidden to offer a mod-chip service here in germany.. sucks (needed to play US NTSC games with PAL consoles)... so hopeless.. if there'd only be working PS2 emulator :( but I might buy Xenosaga Der Wille zur Macht & Jenseits von Gut und Böse and save them for later.

Xenosaga its an amazing game, well for me and also for those who play Xenogears have good graphics EXCELLENT music and good gameplay so if you can play it, but I doubt it like you said, it would be one of your favorites hehehehe
Maxin
01-12-2005, 12:32 PM
I'll second that. I've played Xenosaga Episode 1 and loved it! It has a great story and a fun battle system that requires some strategy. I will admit that you will be watching a lot of cutscenes and movies, though. I would have liked some more gameplay in it. But it was still a really great game. I'm anxiously waiting for Episode 2, which I hear has a different battle system and a better gameplay-to-cutscene ratio.
Although I may have to either replay Xenosaga Episode 1 or find something online that'll help me remember the story. It's been a while and I'm sure I've forgotten some things.

I bought an import copy of Venus and Braves last night. I've given up all hope of a US release, and decided that I've wated long enough.
Back to Xenosaga, I also loved it but not as much as Xenogears, I must say... Maybe there are too many cutscenes for my taste. On the other hand, the story is so great that I can't complain.
Maxin
01-16-2005, 07:46 PM
Just thought I'd mention that Xenosaga Episode 2 (Jenseits von Gut und Böse) was reviewed in my latest PSM magazine. It only got a 6 out of 10. If anyone's interested in more details, I can give them.
That score probably will not stop me from playing it, though. I need to see what happens next!

I heard of it too, (that its not so good like the 1st one) but I also will buy it I love Xeno Series too so I dont want to miss it hehehe ( the only thing I regret its the Yasunori Mitsuda go out of the proyect) anyway soon very soon
eViL bAz : Still, Yuki Kajiura will be doing the music... I like her work very much, especially on Noir and Madlax. ;)
I think the XS2 Movie Scene Soundtrack wasn't all that great. Yuki Kajiura does not evolve at all. Everything she does sounds too much the same, and I don't care for her style.
eViL bAz
01-17-2005, 12:52 PM
I hear it too and I was desappinted, Like kilu said its very repetitive, nothing to do with the magistral work of Mitsuda In Episode 1 but everyone have hteir opinions and this is mine hehehehe
Maxin
01-17-2005, 12:53 PM
Yeah, when I heard the Mitsuda wasn't doing the soundtrack for Episode 2, I was worried. Still am...
I don't know what cons the magazine gave the game off hand. I'll have to wait until I get home to post them.
Well, I' not saying that Mitsudas work on XS1 was all that great either actually. Sure, it was nice, because I generally like Mitsudas style, but the same goes for him as well. His style hasn't evolved over the years at all.
Good example of evolving composer are Motoi Sakuraba and Hitoshi Sakimoto. Their style is still the same, but they have expanded, made it huger over the time and brought other elements in there. Yasunori Mitsuda, Nobuo Uematsu and Kenji Ito for example have been sort of stagnant since they started. They found a style that pleased most of the audience they served to and stuck with it.
Mitsudas Hako no Niwa is a bit different compared to his regular work, which was a fresh album from him. Allthough it wasn't very impressive from the musical standpoint, it was fresh.
eViL bAz
01-17-2005, 01:05 PM
ok Im a little diasagree with you in the case of Mitsuda, (Uematsu and Ito soesnt evolve thats the only thing I agree) but Mitsuda have grow since their first job ok its verysimilar but I think hes fresh everytime he get out another "Masterpiece" but Like I said thts my 2 cents
Maxin
01-17-2005, 02:20 PM
And I just remembered that Final Fantasy XII's soundtrack is supposed to be composed by Hitoshi Sakimoto (at least, that's what I've read), so I'll look forward to hearing this music!
And I will agree that Uematsu's work hasn't truly evolved either. I still like his music, though, as sometimes there's no reason to change what isn't broken.
But, I'll admit, I don't have much in the way of video game music anyway. So I can't really say much about who has or hasn't evolved. I just know what sounds good to me!
Yeah, Sakimoto is the main composer of FF12. As far as I know, Uematsu will be composing the main theme of the game, and that song will be used in different forms throughout the game. As in, the melody will have more than just the theme usage. But as of now, details are more or less shaky.

The next games I'll buy are
Star Ocean 3, Suikoden IV, Wild Arms Alter Code F, Xenosaga II, Growlanser Generation, Metal Gear Solid 3, Tales of Symphonia & FF Chrystal Chronicles.
Except the last two, all of them will be american :)
Well it is not really a RPG, more a tactical RPG, but I can't wait the next Fire Emblem for GBA. I became totally addicted to the first one ("Curse, I've only been spending four hours in the train ! I'm not finished yet !" :D)

I have Xeno 2 pre-ordered, but found out that once again Namco has decided to censor the US version. That pisses me off, and combined with the reports that it's half as long as the last one, different voice actors, and other stuff, I'll be getting my money back tomorrow when it comes in so I can get something else (most likely Baten Kaitos) instead. To hell with censor nazis.

i heard FF12 didnt have much music by Uematsu in it??? will someone verify that, i hope it does he is my legend along with Koji Kondo.
also FF12 will be my next RPG depending on when it is released, i hope its soon.
Uematsu will be the composer of the main theme (probably comparable to Zanarkand theme in FFX, for example) and maybe/probably some variants of the main theme. Details are a bit sketchy still, but one thing is certain. Hitoshi Sakimoto will be the lead composer of FF12. Sakimotos other work include Breath of Fire 5, Final Fantasy Tactics (part of it anyway), most of Final Fantasy Tactics Advance, Vagrant Story and Gradius 5, to name a few. Also the main core of the development team is mostly the same as the team who did Vagrant Story and Final Fantasy Tactics.
Which are the exact reasons why it's the first FF game to really excite me at all, and even before it's release.
Oh yeah, I'm also pretty exited about Wanda and the Colossus. ICO was so awesome, and I bet WatC won't fail either.
Geosgaeno
03-29-2005, 03:03 PM
its a shame that Uematsu isnt doing the full music score, if you ask me it looks like he is ready to retire, his last work he did all by himself was the FF9 OST, all those years ago, he did most on FFX too. anyway his music lives on, i still admire it.
it'll be nice to see if these new people can match to his standards.
Uematsu did about half of the tracks on FFX, 52 I think, Hamauzu did 36 and Nakano 21. And only couple of the Uematsu pieces were really that great. I doubt that Uematsu is retiring though. Going freelance is (hopefully for him anyway) a good way to freshen up quite a bit, as he is pretty much stuck with some generic manouvers, and only shining occasionally.
Latest rumours that I have heard (they might have been confirmed since then though) is that Uematsu will be composing for some XBox game/s which are developed by the ex-square man Hironobu Sakaguchi's new company.

Hitoshi Sakimoto will be the lead composer of FF12.
YES YES YES!!!!
what sucks is that here in the states, FF XII, Kingdom Hearts 2, and Wanda and The Colossus all have a general "Fall 2005" release date. Guess I'm gonna have to pre-order all of them now, and pay like 5$ a week on all of them.

Soooo. Anything you gotta buy these days ?
I bought Wild Arms Alter Code F, but hardly played an hour. I think I won't buy Wild Arms 4 unless its price lowers at a minimum.
My next games will be :
-Grandia 3
-Shadow Hearts (new world or somethin')
-Suikoden V
My priority will be Suikoden V of course.
I need to buy Shadow of the Colossus at some point.
Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess is of course on my list of things to buy, but as it doesn't even have a solid release date yet... *shrug*.
Other than that, can't really think of anything. Of course Final Fantasy 12 is still on my list, but at this pace it's not gonna arrive in Europe before Christmas 2006, so I have no hurry to gather the cash. :D
Maybe Kingdom Hearts 2. Not sure about that yet. The soundtrack was pretty crappy on its own, hopefully it will work in the context better. And as with most of the stuff on my list, no close release on this one either.

I've tried the FF12 demo and really didn't like the system.
I agree to this : it's innovative. But it doesn't feel like I'm playin' a Final Fantasy game anymore... more than that online RPG which stole #11 to the serie.
Hope they'll come back to ATB or turn based and let down this "real-time" style.
I'm told the battle system is some sort of combination with online rpg style and atb. Haven't tried it. The game will be out in Japan in two days, and Famitsu gave it a perfect score on it's review, so it can't be all bad.
Maybe they have changed something in the battle system to make it work better or something. Either way, I'm still expecting it to be awesome.

Well, you see monsters on the map and can do battle with them. You can pause the game or execute your commands while the game continues. So once you selected "attack" with all characters, you can just wait there and enjoy the show until the fiend dies. You can only control the movements of one character at a time and can event set your 2 others on AI, but you can always select a spell or an attack command for whoever.
It's really an up to date setup and many gamers will like it. It's a well done game, but it's called Final Fantasy dammit and it doesn't feel like one.
Maybe I'll like it after a few hours of play, but my first impressions aren't good...

Well, the game is out in Japan already, and american release is set to fourth quarter of 2006, so it just may collide with the ps3 release which is now set to november I think.

Not really into rpg's any other than bof and FF maybe i should check some others but for now the next will be FFXII...
I see that now Hironobu Sakaguchi has left Square-enix that Nobuo has followed suit (and is working on the next two rpg's being headed by Hironobu for Xbox). I really hope its not the end of FF games as we know them..otherwise I will be forced to defect too.
Futhermore I suggest Enix's influence has cocked it all up. Since they came we have had the good ol FFX-2 (note sarcasm) and now we get cash ins like Before crisis and Dirge Of cerberus or whatever its called.
If FFXII is as crap as FFX-2 then thats me finished with it.
EDIT: as my friend reminds me it got 40/40 by Famitsu Mag. However so did Ocarina of time which it didn't deserve. How can it be that OoT gets 40/40 but FF7 doesn't..beggers belief!
Anyway as I was saying, FFXII looks very promising but it better be!

I wouldn't call X-2 an Enix flop. You are just assuming that because of the merger the game sucked for you. You should know that Enix has done a bundle of awesome turnbased RPGs and adventure RPGs in their own as well.
I'm not going to download the psf pack for the reason that I may actually wait for the game to come out in here before I listen to the soundtrack (which I have preordered, btw). But have no fear, Sakimoto will wipe the floor with all doubters. :D

who knows it might have been....Hironibu and Nobuo seem to be gone also.
What does this has to do with "Enix flop"?
The mere suggestion that Enix merger would have caused FFX-2 to suck is silly. A peek through the credits of FFX-2s credits and comparing them to Square staff and Enix staff reveals that only two Enix staffers were involved with X-2. General Producer Yasuhiro Fukushima and Production Executive Keiji Honda. Rest of the staff have mostly been in the service of Squaresoft for several years, and quite many were involved with FFX and earlier FF games as well.
You should also notice that Hironobu Sagakuchi is credited as Executive Producer.

could be FF3, FF12, KH2, or maybe perhaps Children of Mana. Not too thrilled about GBA remakes of FF4, 5, or 6. the graphics are improved, however the resolution is very low, and there are only 2 sound channels that are GBA quality, then they just mix the GBC/GB quality channels in. SNES had 8 sound channels, and GBA only has 2 that are capable of snes quality or better(but only 2). http://www.gameboy-advance.net/emulated/snes_roms_on_gba.htm
