i don't remember if this thread existed in the old forums but i think it could develop into something . . . . . . . . . even if it is one of those threads that dies in a week.

Favourite Genre?! Well, I'd bet RPG comes up for many of us.

I'd have to say I'm sort of inbetween these days, with RPGs, First Person Shooters, Strategy, Racing... I enjoy a wide variety of genres. Overall though, RPGs are definately the majority of my collection.

:D As with music, I wouldn't pigeonhole myself into one genre - I look stuff from all of them. I'd say I probably gravitate most to rpg/action hybrids, or adventure games with rpg elements, such as Zelda. :bouncy:

hmmm with all the excitment of creating the thread :yeahright: i guess i forgot to post my own fav genre.

much like other members i'm sure i can't pick a fav genre of games. the only games i tend to lean toward are rpgs because of their length. i enjoy action and racing and fighting etc. but i find they don't give you enough O_O for your cash. when i buy a game i want something with good replay otherwise why not just rent the game and give it back. :bsod:

bow down before this petulant banana god

Well, I can't really say that RPG is my favourite genre. But I can't really say that anything else is either.

However, I can say that I don't enjoy simulation games (god games) that much. Almost everything else goes.

But if needed, I would probably say that I'm some sort of mixture of action adventure rpg survival gamer. Games like Beyond Good & Evil, Terranigma, 3D Zelda games, and of course Resident Evil, Fear Effect and Dino Crisis.

But, I can honestly say that first person shooters is my favorite genre. Sorry Locke!:(

My bf's 1 fault is his not liking of RPGs.... :(
I don't think I'll be able to train that one either. :p

But it's ok, he can have his RTS games (psh) and I'll have my nice RPGs. :D
He says if he wants an RPG experience he can just read a book. :p

okay, i've finally decided... i like action/adventure preferably with a hint of RPG thrown in.

like devil may cry. (the first one, not the second one)
but it could have used a little more RPG, i think.

Tactical RPGs, like Disgaea, Final Fantasy Tactics, and Fire Eblem are my probably my favorite type. Though I do enjoy most any game genre myself.

He says if he wants an RPG experience he can just read a book. :p I do find that statement about an RPG experience in a book being sort of true.
I also believe I would play an RTS over an RPG anyday! But don't get me wrong, RPGs are fun as well.

I like to read so I like RPGs, they're like interactive books where you have some hand in deciding the outcome. :D

Ever read those books that give you decisions which take you to different outcomes? They're literally RPGs in books with HP and everything.

Oh yah.. and blast you Canadian people!! Eh?

Blast us? No thanks :D ! May I ask why?

I also like platformers quite a bit. But not as much as Action RPGs.

Are these similar to what you're talking about Yuffie?

Now FPS books would be something huh? ... Actually, maybe not!

I'm kind of a weird one in that I have two genres I like for opposite reasons. I sometimes like the action adventure with RPG elements (like Zelda games, Illusion of Gaia, stuff like that) because they don't require hours of leveling up.
Ironically, I sometimes long to play a game heavy in leveling up (:wacky:) for the joy of watching my characters learn stuff. Final Fantasy games (other than 8), and definately Dragon Warrior/Quest games qualify here.

i like RPG's not solely for the same reason, but... for the same reason. >.>

but i have a problem when it comes to MMORPG's... when it takes hours to gain one level and days if not weeks to get that cool item you want oh-so-badly.

it's just so not worth it.

Skactopus: The ones I used to play involved you doing a few dice rolls at the beginning to get your starting HP. After that, certain actions you took caused you to gain HP lose it or die completely. :p

They usually had about 20 different endings, but only 1 allowed you to survive the game.

Here's an example:

"The old woman invites you into her cottage for some tea, as she leaves the room you ponder which questions you will ask her about the missing amulet.
The woman returns and places the tea tray in front of you with 2 cups of tea before leaving the room to check the cookies in the oven.
Do you:

A) Swap the tray around and drink from the furthest cup intended for the woman?
B) Trust the old woman and drink the tea closest to you?

If A) You switch cups with the old woman while she is away and drink as she returns. Soon you feel a tightening in your throat and the metallic taste of blood as you stumble to the floor, the woman merely stares at you with an untrusting glare as your eyes black out. THE END

If B) The woman returns and drinks from her cup, within seconds she falls to the floor gagging. She drinks from a small vile in her pocket and stands well again. "You are very trusting child, and honesty deserves respect, what do you wish to ask me about?"

Bit of a long example and not as good as the real books but it serves it's purpose. :p

:D I remember that type of book - I had one or two, as I recall. I definitely wouldn't call them high literature, nor would I necessarily claim them great entertainment. But they were enjoyable enough until the novelty wore off. :spin:

Ahh, RPG books :D I even wrote two of them for a friend of mine... You know, the kind of story that takes place in school, where you fight your teachers, and so on ^^ It was frickin' hilarious

Ironically enough, one of my teachers in middle school had us write a choose-your-own-adventure book. No HP, but there were choices to be made and paths to take. I can't really remember mine very well anymore; I think the character got lost in the forest somehow and had to try to make it out. It had a lot of fantasy elements, most of which I don't think my teacher understood. I should try to find it sometime, and remember how bad a writer I was in 7th grade. :p

My friend got suspended for writing an adventure book about one of our teachers Mrs "Lady Macbeth" Donald. :p

I loved that part of MajorMUD the most. Being a high level wasn't earned by all, but a choice few who put forth enough time and effort into their character. It was addictive, abit too addictive. 2+ years of my life out the window.

i guess i'd have to say rpg, followed by golf games. golfing has always been a passion of mine, so to play video games with that is a bonus for me!

Yeah RPG for me to followed by RTS's I can't wait to get my hands on Age of Empires 3. It looks to be a great game. I just wonder if you can choose to lose the American Revoultion and see what happens if America had stayed a British colony. And what would have happened to Canada. Maybe we would have had eh Canadain revolution and we would have been the worlds sole reamianing super-power. It kind of makes you wonder

RPG for sure but I like to play racing games and fighting games also. The most of the time I spent playing rpg:s but sometimes I may play Colin Mcrae rally for excample. In racing games the point is trying to get better times. Especially in the ghost mode where I can see my best drive so far and try to get to the finish before the ghost does. Fighting games like Soucalibur II are for those days when I just want to kick some ass.;)
