I believe one of the most important aspects of a RPG, is a strong character development system, The more user definable variety the better.
Of course, Class specific PC style RPG's are great, Choosing a class and specilising it with stats and often skills, Obviously this is a great way of creating a special character that fits your gaming style.

Another great system is that of FFV, I thought it was great, and that most other final fantasys were seriously lacking in these aspects.

what aspects do you look into for a good rpg, and what are some of your all time faverouts?
Im looking for a GBA game with a strong character development system, anyone know any?

yeh. actualy a good character development and skill system will make me buy a rpg first.i used to be a big mmorpg player but todays game all go for the damn class system.you pick a class lvl up and barely have any choice to make about your character except picking a second class at some level.no stats picking..nothing..ugh!

i miss a creative skill system like asherons call 1 where you chose your stats and skill at the begining and with the exp you made in game you could put points in any stats or skill you had.

I want rpgs where you can make a character just how you want him to be.

but sadly games like that needs more balance and todays game producer want to apeal to everyone making every game as simple as possible to make more money. leaving us poor hardcore rpg player with another boring lookalike character development system.

I am fairly sure table-top RPG's would hold the title of best character development. On account of there aren't really any type of limitations to it.

Or did you mean just in a video game?

The only variations I can think of for character development are the average levelling up system and the sphere grid (which seemed like a good idea until you realise there's more spheres than there would have been levels!).

Golden Sun uses the basic level up system but it adds elemental factors into it depending on which elemental creatures each character is given, so that varies it a little...but doesn't make a very noticeable effect.

Tomb Raider Angel of Darkness was a surprise for character development...although not entirely successful it was a good effort and idea to make her only strong enough to make certain leaps etc. by kicking a door open to strengthen her legs.
