Lossless audio...

What is the best lossless audio program and subsequently best player for such format??? Started playing around with iTunes yesterday and I got more interested in lossless audio compared to mp3.

Today, the most used lossless formats are :

- Monkey's audio (APE) -> pika's link
- Free Lossless Audio Codec (FLAC) -> http://flac.sourceforge.net/

Basically, FLAC ensures the best quality because it has been tested thoroughly. However, its creators don't seem to know how to make an appealing website to promote their product.

The APE guys, on the other side, do not insist on quality checks as much as the FLAC team, but promote the ease of use and the compression speed of their format. Note that their comparison table has a reference to FLAC 0.1, which does not mean anything (the current FLAC version is 1.1.2).

By viewing the websites only, any average user would choose APE. Personally, I'd choose FLAC because the whole stuff looks more professional. The only thing is : my hard drive is definitely not ready for that :D
