Link and Mario are cool but Link realies too much on weapons, and ive had most of my fun playing Mario than Zelda although Zelda has a storyline to it and Mario doesnt really, so many good memories of Mario though.
MARIO.....can i choose bothhttp://www.rpgamers.info/images/smilies/biggrin.gif

Link of course.
The weapons are what's cool about him.
When jumping on somthing's head is the main way to kill it,
And some have spikey shells so you can't,
And those ones are usually beaten by hitting them with an already defeated foe's shell,
Why don't they just ALL have spiky shells?
Then Mario would be proper screwed over.
Except for those damn fireballs.
If they could find a way around that, them those Koopa's would be set for life.

I have to vote for Mario. I mean, who doesn't love a stoned plumber gobbling mushrooms and burning people? http://www.rpgamers.info/images/smilies/evilgrin.gif

Me. I don't.
Look at him, lording his red overalls over me.
Come to think of it... Has anyone actually seen red overalls anywhere in reality?
Me. I don't.

Come to think of it... Has anyone actually seen red overalls anywhere in reality?I have! They were fire-truck red. Oh so cool. =)

Swords are fun, but again... what compares to a stoned plumber :p
besides... I remember seeing a crazy short movie from the fifties that seemed like it was an early mario thing... Galthol knows what i mean :p

Link.
Short, fat, plumbers with accents, dungarees and moustaches just don't do it for me. :wonder:
Although someone needs to tell Link that men in white tights went out with the dinosaurs and those little tufty bits of hair that go over his ears are a bit strange. :)

Mario used to be from Brooklyn... Now he's from a crazy land of mushroom headed people, and Goombas!... What in everything's name are Goombas supposed to be anyway? Just weird little thingies, or what?
Yuffie
06-12-2005, 05:19 PM
Are they those mushroom things you jump on and squish...? I just thought they were called mushrooms! :amazed:
But Mario was never my kind of game (until Mario 64), I didn't like the layout of it. I preferred the seemingly more 3D layout of the 1st Zelda games. :)
Is there a better word than layout for this and a way to describe those two "layouts"? Or that's going to bug me.
Maybe you could just use the word perspective.
Yuffie
06-13-2005, 09:05 AM
Yeah that's better than layout but I'm sure there's still a better word.
Like rather than saying it's a role playing or adventure type of game you use the word genre... O.o
I have no idea what you are after :D

At lesast it's not as stupid as to why Lance Likes Mario better than link. That movie he saw didn't even have ANYTHING to do with Mario...

THIS Mario movie? Released in 1993?
It looks painful to watch even by the 90s standards :amazed:

MARIO
I vote for mario due to the endless hours of entertainment I've gotten from me and some friends, sitting at home, drunk or whatnot, and playing Mario for hours on end. Endless entertainment. And Lance, if we gave you red coveralls and you could grow a mustache, you'd look like mario. Minus the Jumping ability. And people, come on now, Mario RPG. One of the best damned RPG's that the SNES came out with. It ranks up there with FFVI and Chrono Trigger to me, except with more humor and better graphics.
Mario, a fat plumber. Link, a little fairy boy prancing about the woods with pointy objects. And yet, they both have excellant games.
As to the Mario movie, Lance, you didn't understand half of that movie when it came on the TV way back when. I was sober, and it pained me to watch it. Now if I wasn't, the movie would probly be tremendously entertaining. Though to it's credit.... never mind, theres nothing. :wall:

Mario games used to bug me because even when you took your finger off the button he sort of slid a little way...usually off a ledge into oblivion. That just annoyed me once too often

That's why you just keep on jumping and jumping and jumping. And then next thing you know your done of the level :p
Yuffie
06-24-2005, 09:18 AM
True but I always manage to jump straight into some annoying flying/jumping bad guy!
It also annoyed me how you couldn't walk back left of the screen and in some levels you had to keep going forward as the screen moved :p
Locke

You just gotta learn to beat the game while under the influence. Once you can do that, playing it sober is childs play :p
(Not that I'm advocating getting under the influence, I'm just making the statement that if you can do it when your not sober, trying when your sober is really really easy :D.)

That's easy. Aside from maybe the Philips CD-i creations, there has never been a "bad" Zelda game. Mario on the other hand...

I was going to vote for Link until yesterday. I was watching Cinematech on G4 yesterday, and I saw actual video of someone beating the original Super Mario Bros. in FIVE minutes [I am not exaggerating this, it was truly just five]. It was unbeliveable. They were jumping over Piranha [sp?] Plants and Bullet Bills, just skimming over the top. This person knew exactly when and where to jump for every spot. The quickness through the underground levels with it being so tight was extraordinary. They even knew where to hit the blocks for a star, even though they didn't need it. I was in awe of Mario and his powers.

I've seen that video. I hate to tell you this but it's kinda fake. Not really but kinda. The game was played, as you said, perfectly. But the video, after being recorded, was speeded up just slightly. If you watch the video again, you'll notice that there's no way the original NES can process quite as fast as the video makes it out to. Unless of course they were playing on an emulator.
Actually, that's not true. It's not sped up, but recorded in slow motion, to achive 'super human reflexes'. Learn more in in Tool Assisted Console Game Movies (http://bisqwit.iki.fi/nesvideos/). This (http://bisqwit.iki.fi/nesvideos/movies.cgi?id=263) is the currently fastest tool assisted super mario bros movie.
There are also real time attacks, that don't use tools like savestates or slow down. Can't remember the site for that right now though.

And acutally, the video I was talking about was in real time. You can find it here:
http://speeddemosarchive.com/Mario1.html (http://speeddemosarchive.com/Mario1.html)
They have complied many other speed runs here also.
This run is also verified by Twin Galaxies, who I guess are the video-game referee and record people. Anytime there's a major video game tournament or competition, they officiate it, I would guess. Here is the page verifying the five-minute runthrough:
http://www.twingalaxies.com/index.aspx?c=22&pi=23&gi=411&vi=5717

Indeed. That was the site that I couldn't remember the name of. The tool assisted run is not even a whole lot faster.

As a young lad a can distictly recall watching a Mario t.v. show, it had a real guy who talked for a while at the start of the episode, like a re-cap, then he jumped down a pipe and became a cartoon character.
I also recall it being on right before a ZELDA t.v. show, though that was just a cartoon straight out, and a pretty good one if I remember correctly, kind of Robin Hood-ish, but with a sword that could shoot beams out of it once and awhile.
I am quite sure those existed. Unless I'm drunk somehow.
You mean this cartoon?

I think I remember that...but isn't Link blonde..?
Hehe, if you put him in a hawaiian shirt he'd look like a surfer with that face and hair.
Astrolounge
07-09-2005, 10:12 PM
In a hawaian shirt, and still wearing that hat, and carrying a sword around?
I think he would look less along the lines of a surfur, and more along the lines of F***ING INSANE...

But he'd be a really cool looking weirdo.
Astrolounge
07-10-2005, 11:50 AM
Most weirdo look cool to some extent. And it's the quiet ones you have to watch.
You never know when they might leap up from their little corner where they're reading and interrupt the work of that guy in the hockey mask swinging a machete around into desks and people.
Yes, the quiet one's the guy your going to be watching.
Yuffie
07-10-2005, 06:45 PM
I'd say the quiet ones are smarter...they wait for the loud ones to do the dirty work with the machete then when it's all done they shoot the loud ones and claim whatever benefits are to be had. :D
Astrolounge
07-10-2005, 09:03 PM
There usually aren't any benifits.
Unless you count infamy and arrest.
You just rob the bodies, much more finacially sound.
Locke
07-11-2005, 08:33 AM
Or, if you want to be really manipulative, the quiet one sits in the corner and the subdues the loud person with the machete in whatever way possible. This would then lead to the quiet one getting credit for saving everyone else who was threatened by the loud one and is then known as a hero. Such is the benefits of being a quite shrewd person. :p
Astrolounge
07-11-2005, 02:38 PM
I would think quiet people usually don't want attention drawn to themselves.
Lance Alvein
07-11-2005, 04:48 PM
I think we're just quiet so that we can wait for the right time... at least, that's what I do. :p
Yuffie
07-12-2005, 06:22 AM
Being quiet is also a nice way of saying "please please please don't pick me!" :D
But it doesn't work in school...they just ask you because you're being quiet! :amazed:
Locke
07-12-2005, 08:39 AM
There's other tricks for not getting picked by the teacher :p. (ie when you have only the first 5 of 30 homework questions done, volunteer one of the first 5 :p).
Meh, me I think that quiet people are merely biding their time until they have the correct moment to act. ;) . Though it is kinda sad when they don't realise that every moment has the potential to be the best moment. Meh, whatever works for them, I guess.
Astrolounge
07-12-2005, 04:40 PM
The secret to not being called on is to look attentive, but don't make eye contact.
I was never once asked to answer a homework question.
Locke
07-12-2005, 04:47 PM
Not bad. I guess both work because I never got in trouble with teachers for not doing my homework, and it was rarely done.
