Yeah, FF6 and Chrono Trigger were excellent. But Xenogears beat them all, believe me :D

Vagrant Story, hands down.
Thank you! It truly is a great story. I think I can get a different interpretation and a new respect for the story each time I play it. It weaves wonderfully, and the story is smart and refreshing. I'm hoping more of this comes along in FF XII.

we have these question threads all the time, maybe we should keep ressurecting the old ones?
Anyway mine is:
all FF's after 5 esp 7, 8 and 10.
Bof3 was great too, and I am now playing chrono trigger. I don't have a wide enough rpg knowledge but why bother when I know FF's are unbeatable:)

Just like Zeugma 440 said, Xenogears has the best story of all, with FFVII coming in a close second place

Xenogears is my top favourite story...so complex and intriguing
followed by Vagrant Story, Lunar Eternal Blue (Sega CD), Suikoden 1 & 2, Final Fantasy 6, Final Fantasy 7, Final Fantasy tactics, Chrono Trigger...
^^ and a lot more, in no particular order

I was talking about the story of Shadow Hearts. If you like good stories, you might want to give a try to Shadow Hearts 2. You have to get till the end, and playing the first game helps a lot in understanding everything.
Aside that, Xenogears is still my #1.
FF6 and 7 are awesome
Suikoden 2 and 3
Lunar 2
Star Ocean 2

Disgaea was great, but certainly not for its storyline.
Laharl is an awesome character along with that little angel (good quotes and funny has hell !)
But the storyline...:shame:

I didn't think it was that bad, but you know... just not among the best ;)

FFIX is one of my favorites, by far. Vivi is such an involving character! And the story of the origional (sp) FF opened up a whole lot for me when I played the Dawn of Souls remake for the GBA. Also, I will never truly understand what playing Chrono Trigger did to me at the impressionable age of twelve, but I know that I would be a completely different person if I hadn't played it.
I'm playing thru the origional Phantasy Star games too for the SMS. Good story there, too, and I like the old school feel of having to draw your own maps on graph paper. Games these days do too much for you; I haven't played a game that required a calculator since the Ultima series for the NES. Wait, Ultima sucked. Anyway, never mind that; it's the principle!
These stories are all great, but we've all seen these games before! Who's got any good suggestions for some more uncommon series? JP only are oaky, too; my tastes are wide and my appetite instatiable! Don't be shy!

I personally liked the Shin Megami Tensai games for the SNES. They may have been JP only, but once translated, they gave me quite some game time before I was done with them.

I have a ROM chapter of Radical Dreamers for the SNES, Marona. I didn't download it myself, so I don't know where it's from, but I can try and find out for you. I'm at a work comp right now, so I can't look it up. I'll tell you, though, that the music is killer. Most of it you'll hear in Chrono Cross (since they're the same game), but there are some that are unfamiliar, yet equally cool!

Difficult to say, but I have noticed that the more RPGs I play, the more similar the stories seem to be. There never seems to be an RPG set in the current day on Earth though... is there one?
Doreagarde
06-10-2005, 11:17 PM
Secret of Evermore is... kind of. Actually, come to think of it, it really isn't.
And I don't remember my Radical Dreamers ROM being so hot either, bug wise. I still beat it, though. I thought it was cool that there were no HP gauges, no Menus, no numbers, no anything. All stats were hidden. They should have more games like that. Imagine a tabletop RPG with all hidden stats. No... an MMORPG with all hidden stats. Oh, that's awesome...
You could try Shadow Hearts Tess. It's set in the real world, in a way. With some extra spice though, of course.

Earthbound is pretty much set on a modern day Earth.
As for the best RPG story, I haven't played enough RPG's that rely on their story to be able to call one the best.

I think I've realised why I can't choose one! :D
Because I normally quit near the end due to boredom of continuous bosses or general laziness so I never find out the ending to the story.
I think maybe if I look up how a game ends it might encourage me to finish it so I can see how they've shown it and if it's up to my imagination's standards. :p
Do any of those Earth RPGs include fantasy monsters or actual earth animals and things? I guess we're lucky that we don't get caught in a swirl of pixels when we walk down the street and then have to battle a two headed slime monster every few steps. :D

I think FFVII had wolves that lived in the snow... but they were called Bandersnatches. Lewis Carrol would have us believe those were ficitional.
And don't be ridiculous, Yuffie. People don't get in fights unless they're outside of towns. You know, like, the world map? You're pretty safe until you walk outside city limits. However, if the town is under martial law, there is a chance that you'll run into random solider-types, but they're usually pretty weak, and you can slaughter as many as you want with no legal or international repercussions. I won't take responsibility on any plot-realted boss-fighting, though. ;)

Aren't Lewis Carrol's bandersnatches monkey things who steal stuff?

Personally one of the first RPGs I ever played was Dragon Warrior ( I was real little and my family owns all nintendo systems until I started buying video games :D ) and it being one of my older brother's games, it took me awhile to beat, but was very enjoyable ;) but then I remember playing the later Final Fantasies and those I loved more, by far 7 is near the top of my list, it was also my first owned rpg that I bought so it holds a special place because of that. 8 through X-2 round up after. I also enjoyed the XenoSaga games. Half my life I spent playing RPGs on summer vacation like I am again. I can't wait for Kingdom Hearts 2 :tophat:

Personally, for best story I would rank FFVI as number one (naturally), followed closely by such great games (in no particular order) as FFVII, FFIX(I liked the storyline of that one), Chrono Trigger, Xenogears, Jade Empire, Secret of Mana, Seiken Densetsu 3(sp), Tales of Symphonia, Treasure of the Rudra's. Oh god, the list just keeps going and going and going. :p

In Golden Sun I have been running up and down the same walkway for ages to get random battles and level up....this doesn't really bother me, it has to be done I guess.
So off I ran to the boss battle feeling confident and went ahead and beat the boss! :D
Only to discover the 2 bosses morphed together and kicked my ass. :(
Now if you'll excuse me, I have to run back and forth some more.

Legend of Dragoon was awesome. How can you go wrong with lines like "Shut up. Talking makes you die" That's such a grand saying.

As is the line from a different game, "Hush child! Words cost a thousand pounds a second!"
Although I still don't really get it...I don't think you're supposed to...

What game was that one from? I don't get it now, but if I DL the game/rent the game I might be able to figure out what it means.

Which one? The one with the hidden oasises or with the monster powered whirlwinds...? That's right...there's two of them!!! :amazed:
It's Alice in Wonderland for CD-i...but the line's said by a sheep that's knitting so I wouldn't worry too much about it. :p

Hi ppl,
i'd say mines are:
1- Xenogears
2- Final Fantasy 7
3- Breath of Fire 4
4- Vagrant Story
5- Tales of Destiny 2

Ahhh, ok then. I won't think to much into it then. No worries. Treasure Hunter G had a grand old storyline as well, from what I recall. (Just adding another one to the list here.)

I'd have to say Xenogears. I thought I knew what was going on with this, but there's so much going you'll really miss out. Too bad Perfect Works is in Japanese (and I'm lazy as can be).

Final Fantasy 6 and 7 are up there for me, and Xenogears (I know this might be a slightly different order then I last had, but meh, I've just been playing Xenogears, so that might explain why that's what's stuck in my head)

Well I can't really decide but from what I've seen to now, it's Xenogears who has the best story.
FF7-8 and 9...mmh...not reall was 7 was rather confusing, 8 was weird and 9 was just anything.
And well I could say Chrono Cross had a good story.

You are joking, right?
Anyway, my vote would have to be somewhere between Chrono Trigger and Jade Empire... with FF5 & FF7 coming close. I know there's at least one game I can't remember right now, but... meh, I'll post it when I think of it.

I dunno if I'd give Jade Empire a good rating in here for story or not. It depends if you mean good for the first time through or replay value, because Jade empire is phenominal the first time through, but it rapidly looses it's appeal the second time through.
You already gave Jade Empire a good storyline vote locke :p

Sorry Kai, it was a long long time ago, and I forgot and apparently was too lazy to go rooting around for it. A double vote from me, I guess http://www.rpgamers.info/images/smilies/confused.gif Or I elaborated on my vote http://www.rpgamers.info/images/smilies/tongue.gif
I suppose it all depends on what makes a good story for an RPG . . what aspects have to be considered? Does it come down to the stories characteristics (replay value, length, character development, etc...) or could we not simply say that it is all a matter of opinion.
