Sony to Release PlayStation 3 in 2006

http://img135.echo.cx/img135/8071/ps34ju.jpg (http://www.imageshack.us)
PlayStation 2 and PSP may have been present at Sony’s press conference at the Electronic Entertainment Expo on Monday, but it was PlayStation 3 that everyone had come to Los Angeles to see.

Sony didn’t disappoint, revealing that it will release its next-generation video games console in spring 2006 - though whether this includes the UK is unknown at this stage.

The new console packs some of the most up-to-date technology available inside a sleek, curved package and also features the first complete PlayStation controller redesign in more than a decade.

The heart of the console is the new Cell chip, which will provide the PlayStation 3 with two teraflops of computing power (this is the amount of calculations it can handle per second) - roughly double that of Microsoft’s recently announced Xbox 360. It also uses a new custom graphics chip by Nvidia that will power in-game visuals only possible previously in computer-generated movies.

Games will come on a new type of disk called Blu-ray, which can hold an astonishing 54GB of data, allowing for games with incredible detail.

Like Microsoft, Sony is stressing its new console’s support of high-definition TV, despite the low penetration of the new technology in some regions, including Europe. PlayStation 3 will be able to output signals at a resolution of 1080p - higher than any console available now and higher than Xbox 360.

The PlayStation 3’s controller loses the now-classic design Sony has stuck with since 1994 for a new look that could be best described as banana shaped. Also gone are the wires - PlayStation 3 controllers work using Bluetooth, and the console will support up to seven controllers at once. It will also be possible to use Sony’s new handheld, the PSP, as an additional controller.

With broadband Internet access becoming a standard feature in homes worldwide, connectivity is a key issue, and PlayStation 3 will support high-speed wired and wireless connections right out of the box.

Like PlayStation 2, Sony’s new console will be able to use a detachable hard drive. This will be sold separately, suggesting that Sony is sticking with its current approach of not creating consoles with the hard drive as a standard hardware feature. PlayStation 3 also has slots for SD and CompactFlash cards and Sony’s own Memory Stick cards.

But as impressive as the graphics, sound and connectivity features of PlayStation 3 are at this point, it’s the great line-up of support from games developers that has jaws dropping. Sequels to most of the top-selling games of this generation are already in development for the next, along with a raft of all-new games.

As the world’s biggest games publisher, FIFA creator EA’s support was never in any doubt, but gamers can also look forward to new games in such well-known series as Devil May Cry, Gran Turismo, Metal Gear Solid, Killzone and Tekken.

PlayStation 3 will also be backward compatible with both PlayStation and PlayStation 2, meaning that there will be thousands of games available for the new console on day one.

Going into Monday’s conference, there were doubts as to whether Sony would be able to keep its top hardware spot, especially considering the power of Microsoft’s Xbox 360, which is set for release at the end of the year. Now it’s clear that Sony is very much still in the fight and the real hard part is figuring out what to do until the hardware is released next year.

So, where did you copy that article from? ;) Instead of that you could have just posted us a link and write your own thoughts of the design and stuff :P

At first glance the controller looks weak and not very confortable. And the design... I dunno. It could be better. Looks a bit silly to me.

looking at the controller it does look kinda uncomfortable but we will see when we get our hands on it, and the design i think it rocks and it gets http://www.rpgamers.info/images/smilies/thumbs_up.gif from me.

I saw the article on the hub last night and I cant belive the power it has. And to use blue-ray disc's. A final fantasy game or a suikoden game at 54gb,il probably be playing for months. And the discs might cost over a $100.
I dont like the old fashion bommerang controllers. Will probably buy 3rd party.
When its horizontal it kinda reminded me of a Turbo Duo.
I better start saving now. Look's like it will have a stickerprice of over a million Yen.http://www.rpgamers.info/images/smilies/flag-jp.gif

I was watching G4's coverage of E3 tonight. They showed all the major points of the "Big Three" press conferences. IF, and I stree if, the stuff shown for PS3 was really real-time, and not CG, it blew everything else out of the water. The Killzone demo was SPECTACULAR. Check it out if you can, they claim that it is really real-time. Also, the short Fight Night demo looked great also.

Also, FF12 keeps getting pushed back. Here's my conspiracy theory [which I claim is most likely one of the silliest things I've ever said]: they are secretly working on it as a PS3 launch title, while still keeping a PS2 guise. Like I said, HIGHLY unlikely, but can you imagine what the PS3 launch would be?

http://www.rpgamers.info/images/smilies/eyepopping.gif that may sound crazy, but it actually wouldn't surprise me. It would make PS3 sell uber-well on launch dayhttp://www.rpgamers.info/images/smilies/eyepopping.gif

Personally, I think it looks wicked. Plus, knowing the trend playstation has going, the old controlers will most likely still work :P . Then, the new controllers look would be a moot point. Meh, we'll see when they hit the market.

I'm not gonna judge the controllers at all until I hold one. Who knows, with my small hands, perhaps it will fit perfectly? And I don't know about old ones; the new ones are all Bluetooth, so they might not even be hook-up for old ones.

And you know I'm going silver, it looks so sharp.

Console will be twice as fast as Xbox 360 and I doubt Nintendo revolution will be any good.

They should have stuck with the Ps1/2 controllers though.

Still it uses blu-ray technology with a future potential of 1000 GB (1 Tera byte) discs (when they first come out they will be using 30-50 GB discs, roughly 10 times a normal 4.7 GB single layer dvd (5))

They will also house the red laser so they can play Ps1 and 2 games apparently. 1 of those above is an ok review.

Consoles have now gone past normal user PC spec, just imagine what square and konami can do with that power!

EDIT----------------------
News in FF7 is being remade probably for certain, my mate found a ff7 demo for Ps3 so looks like they finally remaking:) The opening of FF7 is shown in real time (and looks apparently very very like the original opening), it aint an fmv but is in game graphics. cool or what!

I have link later

Yes, they showed that demo on TV. If I remember correctly, it said "Presentation Demo for PS3 hardware" or something like that. I think they were just using it as a comparison to show you the power of the hardware.

You would think ther would be other news of this is it was such the case [a real remake], but SquareEnix's confrence was full of Kingdom Hearts II, XII [of which the trailer for had none of Vaan, who was supposedly the main character; perhaps they have shifted gears here?], and the Dirge of Cerebus and Advent Rising items from VII we already know about. I highly doubt there would be a ful-fledged remake of VII at this point.

They have been on about remakes for ages. It will happen but I wish it would happen sooner rather than later. Looks like that demo thing wasn't all it cracked up to be but I forsee a remake soon:)

The PS# looks OK, but the controller looks like it will suck.

I wish it was getting released sooner too. The PS2 is really showing it's age now.

i dont think the control pad looks extremely difficult to use, i only believe it will be difficult to use the analog controls. I just wanna get my hands on it NOW.

the picture and facts are nice but here's my predictions of the video game console wars with the next gen systems:

1. Microsoft goes the way of Sega. X-box 360 will push units like crazy until PS3 comes out then they won't sell anywhere, I believe Sony is going to kill another system franchise and make them only a software developer. Microsoft has innovating features like Sega did for online gaming, if Sega stayed longer no surprise if it would have been the same. That's pretty much it, as far as technology goes, the specs of the PS3 seem to beat the 360 and if the online support gets better...

2. Console or PC Gaming? PS3 and 360 act and look too much like personal computers for your television. Ack :knockedout: and the prices will be closer to them. Personally I think these consoles are moving to a dead end road which will lead them be being out of buisiness. PC Online gaming I think still has a higher market then home console and when today you can buy a pc cheaper, and modify for whatever game comes out, and as long as you have the latest technology, you are better off with a pc then these 2 next-gen consoles.

3. Nintendo's Revolution - last stand? Perhaps it might be, but I believe in how they have come so far and how their direction is perhaps the better one. They can go from 20 years of game development and allow the best backwards compatability with online gaming and next-gen graphics. Only thing Nintendo needs is more 3rd party support. As you can see I still believe in Nintendo, I'm not truly on a Sony or M$ bandwagon, but I'd lean closer to Sony then M$. I believe the standing will be PS3, Nintendo, and X-Box for systems, unless nintendo gets more 3rd party support they will reach highest in console wars is number 2.

I already own a pc and I go for price: So I'd go with revolution because I'd love to play all the old games on one system, with next-gen graphics and nintendo I doubt will be as much as the other 2

P.S. that sony controller looks like a boomerang! :wacky:

Well, ingame graphics from set angles take considerably less processing power than freely movable angle...

But it does look nice. :)
