:D I figure we'll need to field questions about this topic sooner or later, and as a post I was just making was turning into a 'site assistance' sort of thing, I figured the time was ripe. :bouncy:
Oops ~ I forgot my question. :b
Is there any way to set a default in the whole WYSIWIG thingy? Like, if I want my replies to always be blue Tahoma 3 point? :wonder:
Locke Cole

Not currently, no. However, I'll look into if a mod has been made to allow users to save preference of font/size/colour in their options panel. There are so many mods for this software, I would not be surprised if it's already been made.
Would be cool, as long as no one would use any obscure and hard to read fonts on small size :p Or big size for that matter. Like someone who hasn't been on AIM in ages :p
Locke Cole

Well, maybe I can find a mod that lets you override everyone's font/colour/size selections by the default one as well. You never know what I'll dig up :P

can you check for a mod that adds new post markers as well? by individual posts, i mean. it makes things a lot more convenient...
Kyari
08-02-2004, 06:56 PM
Or how about some options for different skins? I mean, the bluish-purplish is nice, but I think I'd like some choice. Aesthetics is an important part of a forum we all use a lot, and you never know what you'll really like until you see what's available, I find. Does anyone agree?
silverDistortioN

everyone was just talking about that in a different thread... apparently, custom skins overcomplicate things a bit.
Kyari
08-02-2004, 07:09 PM
Ah well. It was worth a shot. I like changing skins a lot. My desktop is hardly the same week-to-week.
Speaking of which . . . . . .
Oh! One question I do have - do updates to the calendar show up for everyone or just one person?
Zedie9

:D I have another question:
You know the button on the top page of the boards that allows the user to mark all posts as read? Could you add one to each of the subsections? You see, I generally reset post markers in each section of the boards - a thing that becomes especially handy when you fall behind in reading posts. ;) On the old boards, I almost never used the top button, but I've had to here. Think that could be arranged? :bouncy:

To address current questions...
- Custom skins will not be coming for atleast a little while.
- Unlike the old forum system, simply logging in and browsing eventually marks posts as "read". On the old forums, you had to read the post to mark it as old, on these ones, if you've logged in since the post was made, it should automatically mark itself as old next time you login. The new post marker is exactly that, new posts since your last visit/login. I don't know why the need for manual resetting is, but I can look into if a mod has been made to do this.
----- EDIT -----
To address the above question, this feature IS included already. If you go into a forum area, such as General, you'll see a dropdown menu called "Forum Tools". It has an option called "Mark this forum read". This will only mark that subsection as read. :) You guys just need to poke around the options more.
- Silver asked at one point for new post markers on each post that's new. If you use that handy link called "New Posts" at the top, it will show you a list of all the new posts. There are two arrows for each post. The arrow to the left of the topic name pointing downward takes you to the first new post in that threadsince your last visit. The other arrow, pointing right beside the name of the last poster, will take you to the last post of the thread. This pretty much eliminates the need for post markers on each post.
Weeee....

The only problem, as I see it, is that when I reply to thread, it takes me back to the thread and shows me my post. After I return to the sub category, it shows the post I just made as new to me. If that makes sense. Don't know if it's just me though, and if browser choice and whatnot may affect to this. But yeah, as you said, there is a button under forum tools, so no sweat.

Oh, and I asked if updates to the calendar apply to everyone. It calls itself a 'shared calendar,' but you never know. I put a test message on Aug. 31 - my flight date for Salt Lake, so someone can check, if they would, and we'll see if calendar dates are for everyone.

can you set it so only certain user groups can add to/delete from the calendar?
Locke Cole
08-08-2004, 06:06 PM
Yes, I can set usergroups for both of those, as well as event editing properties. Thus, yes, moderators will have such an ability.
Also while I'm posting, I figure I'll mention that I have removed the Private Messaging / Email buttons from the memberlist. You can access both of these features from any users profile. The memberlist was getting a bit too wide due to some longer usernames, and it was the best column to remove.

[20:18] <Locke-Cole> I hope noone starts posting nonsense on the new boards to try and reach their old ranks :/ I want it to grow naturally like before, not be rushed into a pile of rubbish :o We're gonna hold off doing moderator campaigning til September.
[20:19] <Kilu> I'm sure it won't go to total spamming

Locke Cole
08-08-2004, 06:27 PM
The time in which we elect moderators will be decided by how active these forums get. Currently, there has been little to no need for any moderation, I've been left without a job! Unless we hit a decent bank of users, having 4 or 5 moderators may just be a waste. It may be in our better interest to increase things such as editing powers of self posts, etc, so if a user does mess up, they can correct it. We'll see what happens. I'm sure I'll announce it when the time comes.

First I recommend making a dedicated thread for it, and giving us more info. Mainly, whose mirror was it, did you download fine before or does it not let you in at all. Everything you can tell will help us help you :)

When I type a long reply for a long period of type and hit "Submit", the boards do not consider that I'm logged in anymore. I have to log again, and I get a beautiful "Invalid thread specified" message box. (NB : I don't activate the "Remember me" option when I log in)
Could you extend the cookie timeout, session timeout or whatever its name is to 30 minutes, Locke ? I don't feel like retyping those big messages everytime I forget to hit CTRL-C before submitting my message... :wonder:

And my sig is gone :(
It appears that your images are lost. Right now atleast I can see your sig, so if photobucket was down, it was apparently temporary. But, if you are still having the same problem, try going to a blank page and flushing your cache. Also, what browser you are using?
jetblue
03-13-2005, 03:25 PM
Im using netscape 7.2 I noticed that if I go to another user account I can post normal and see the images. There's 4 accounts on here, mine, mom's,my brother's and I think my sisters or neice. Since were all fighting I will userp my brothers account and delete the other's.
Unless I can find a way to restore the flash or whatever it is that shows me images and stuff and allows me to post normal.
Friday I was trying to install duke nukem for windows and it did'nt work so I removed it. Thats when I can pinpoint when trouble started. and when i looged off for the night and started up saturday morning I noticed more trouble.
Thanks for replying kilu. How do you go about flushing your cache? I dont think I ever done that.
First off, have you tried other browsers? I'm not suggesting to change completely, just to test out if the problem persists despite the browser.
But if you can see images and stuff when logged into a different account... I doubt a lot that it's a cache problem. But you can always try it though, as well as clearin your cookies. I don't use Netscape myself so I can't pinpoint the exact location where to clear cache and cookies, but it shouldn't be too hard to find from preferences.
*edit:
I just realized that you are probably not talking about different forum accounts, but different user accounts on the whole computer. Is this the case? Probably is, makes a lot more sense that way anyway. If so, the cache and cookie solution I suggested might actually work afterall. Because, as much I'm aware, every user account in WinXP has their own internet histories and stuff like that.

Yeah I ment on the PC accounts. Im the only one that comes here. If my brothers ever did come to rpgamersforum we would be argueing alot, the threads will be filled with curseinghttp://www.rpgamers.info/images/smilies/biggrin.gif
But everything is back to normal nowhttp://www.rpgamers.info/images/smilies/dance.gifI got desperate last night and reinstalled the netscape 7.2 browser and rebooted and wham! problem fixed.
Now I wont userp any PC accounts incase we stop fighting.
But Thanks for all your help kilu.http://www.rpgamers.info/images/smilies/smile.gif I was trying to make this a topic in the testing zone but the problem would'nt let me make topics only fast reply's and this seemed like a good place to put it in.I was having a small panic attack because I could'nt see other sites or log on to them.
Well, clean re-install probably clears cache and cookies on netscape, so :D

Think about it, same day means they logged in sometime during the day - anytime from 12AM to 11:59PM.... same time means logged in and browsing the forums while the other people are on at the same time. This includes unregistered people, thats why its so high.
daniel
03-25-2005, 08:28 PM
I may be wrong here or you may have misinterpreted me. But what I was saying was....it states around 50 users logged on in the same day, but also says 160 logged on at the same time. Obviously you cannot have 50 users logged on in the same day if 160 have been logged on at the same time., They would both equal 160
Yojimbo
03-25-2005, 08:33 PM
if 160ppl were logged in at the same time then they must have been all logged in on the same day, they must, and therefore both numbers should equal 160 should they not???

Hey there everyone.
I'm a total noob when it comes to FTP transactions. I don't know what hammering is or what they mean by passive mode or even how to connect to one of the mirrors. (I believe you click on "Quick URL", right? Anyways, I don't want to be put on the ban list so any know noobs problems that may arise that you could forewarn me about would be most appreciated. Thanks.
BTW, I'm using SmartFTP v1.5 Unlicensed
Zeugma 440
07-29-2005, 06:32 AM
Well, that's good to ask, the forums are here for that :p
- Hammering means trying to connect repeatedly on one server. Usually, more than two connections attemps in 45 seconds may be considered as hammering. If you cannot log in (too many users, for example) just w.a.i.t., let your client reconnect every minute, and you'll eventually get your music :D
- Passive mode is something you can configure on your client. Read the tutorials for more info or browse the settings of your client...
- Clicking on "Quick URL" is definitely evil, because of a bunch of technical issues. Please use a real FTP client like SmartFTP, not your web browser ;)
BAMAToNE
07-29-2005, 03:09 PM
Some FTP clients actually monitor for ftp addresses in web browsers now. I don't know if SmartFTP is one of them, but Bulletproof FTP does do this. (I always turned it off by default because it picked up addresses on the clipboard, too, and became annoying.)
But yeah, Zeugma is right - just make sure the Quick URL doesn't have Internet Explorer (or any web browser) doing to the ftp'ing. (Personally, I think the Quick URLs are a bad idea anyway. *shrug* )
You can rightclick+copy address on the quick address and then paste it on the ftp client of your choice. Some clients (Filezilla, LeechFTP, probably Bulletproof) automatically determine the right places for the fields and fill them for you.

Hey there everyone again,
Thx for the replies. First off, I played around and found out how to connect to the servers and stuff, but I'm stuck on how to set the reconnect to whatever the admin of the server wants. Like in Reth's server he wants the reconnect set to every 40 seconds. I don't know how to do that, if anybody could tell me it would be great.
Also, if there's anything that's probably important that I should know about, like amount of downloads, how long I should stay connected, or anything a total noob like me should know before using an FTP, please inform me.
Thx for your time.

At RPGN, hammering is trying to connect to a server more than once every 60 seconds. If you set your ftp client to retry every 60 seconds, you'll be alright.
