thought i would start a thread to discuss why english comedy is so great.

i believe the succes not only lies in the directors but also in the actors, for example would 'Fawlty Towers' have been a success without John Cleese... i think not.

please post and tell me which English Comedy you like, and which actors. I know many of you live across 'The Pond' and dont have a vast knowledge of our comedy, but im sure i can force you into d/loading an episode of something.

and please i wish to hear no mention of 'F.R.I.E.N.D.S', because i cannot stand that lame ass comedy.

yes, Borat is a truly funny character. i must admit the 'Ali G' shows, were exceptionally cool, those interviews are hilarious, but the main part of the show in my opinion was Borat.

but the guy below, is a legend.

i hope some of you people will take the time and effort to try and watch some episodes of 'Fawlty Towers', and also i hope you consider watching some 'only, fools and horses', i can reassure you that it will not disappoint.

Shhh, dont tell no one but I love Hyacinth Bucket from keeping up appearences. I will name my daughters like them, rose, violet, daisy. The whole show is great.
I also watch the vicar of dibley,My family, and when i was younger I would watch faulty towers on PBS. And benny hill on the local sations.
Its just diffrent and funny.

I do tend to enjoy Rowan Atkinson, as Mr. Bean and Blackadder (2-4) are some of my favorites.

yes, borat is the key. i can't wait for the new season. (he's on HBO over in the states). There's the one skit where he's trying to be a cowboy, and it's just classic. if you can find it online, the borat soundboard is priceless.

and, yes, i used to watch benny hill when it was on comedy central back in the day. good stuff. low-brow, but good.

The Fast Show is by far the best english comedy I have seen. It's just golden. Second is probably Coupling. I generally enjoy english comedy. Haven't watched much of the newer ones though.

For me it's all abut Monty Python, and if you don't like that than well you don't have a very good sense of humour than do you??? "Are you being served?" was anoter good one.

if i am correct is that the story of the 2 club bouncers? i must admit i am not to fond of phoenix nights, but one of the episodes is a cracker. its the episode where the phoenix club is going to appear on the television, and the people in the club are trying to impress the cameras, classic.

Monty Python's 'Life of Brian' was great, i can sit and watch it all day. oh and btw have any of you seen 'ripping yarns'.

Yes Pheonix Nights has the 2 bouncers in, but they are just a side story. They leave at the end of series 2, due to prentending to kill a man for some dosh to pay for the camper van. Max & Paddy Road to Nowhere is the spin off series which continues the bouncers story as they go on the run.

Well I am a great fan of comedy especially english cos its the best I have to say, I love bottom, faulty towers, young ones, red dwarf, and men behaving badly I think those are the best. But I don't like American comedy its frankly turd, there might be a few good stand ups and shows but nothin beats the brits.

British comedies are awsome , though i do have concerns with the new ones. Being british and having british parents you tend to get exposed to every british comedy show in existance ...though now out from under my parents guiding hand i decided to view some of the more recent (2003 +) comedies. And so i watched 'The office' , 'League of gentlement' and 'little britian'
Let me start by saying The office was exceptionally outstanding in most respects (though it is rather tiring to watch episode after episode for 2 seasons...) and then there was 'league or gentlemen' and 'little biritan' and after hearing great thing about both i though that they might actually cause a gigle or two ...how wrong i was ....they are perhaps the two worst comedy shows on the planet ...as for now i feel that australian comedy genius Jon Safran is best to be watched and i recommend to everyone to view his two best series-
'Jon Safran Versus God' (you havce to see it to believe it , very funny)
'Jon safrans music jamberee' (or however you spell it , smart funny also)
also the extras on both dvds are actually high quiality and worth watching ...unlike so many other dvd extras

and then there was 'league or gentlemen' and 'little biritan' and after hearing great thing about both i though that they might actually cause a gigle or two ...how wrong i was ....they are perhaps the two worst comedy shows on the planet well if you beleive that then you dont really want to give these shows the respect they deserve. if you take into account that 'the league of gentlemen' had about 100 characters and just 3 actors who played the parts, it was a huge success for me and i really enjoyed it.

oh and also i dont believe that 'the office' was up to much, when it comes on......wheres that damn remote.

Im glad you enjyed it and even though 3 actors played 100 characters ...after watching the 'best season' (as stated on box and critical reviews) I really didn't even find any substance that could be classed as funny. Also i noticed you didn't stick up for 'little britian' so i assume you held the same feelings towards that one as did i ^_^.

Yojimbo
03-14-2005, 09:08 AM
correct, i was not too fond of little Britain, frankly it sucked. but 'the league of gentlemen' was very very good, the characters and the whole setting just reminded of weird places (sort of like freaky estates), and them sort of people really do exist.

'The league of Gentlemens' comedy is of a different kind to most other comedy shows and thats what makes it unique and pleasurable to watch.

Not boasting but my cousin is one of the main guys in 'The League of Gentlemen'. I say not boasting because I havent spoken to him in something like around the 10 year mark. You could say I dont know him anymore, although I speak to his mum and dad when I see them.

Bouno Estente!

Now I shall mention F.R.I.E.N.D.S :nana:

Well, during one episode, Phoebe is dating a UN translator. The guy he is translating for, happens to meet Monica, and gets a date with her. So they go to a double date. The guy has to translate the diplo's sayings to Monica, and vice versa. He cannot really have a conversation with Phoebs, and gets a bit miffed. Then, after a fairly long sentence, Monica ask "what did he say, what did he say", and the translator, somewhat tensily, answers:

"Boutros-Boutros Ghali"

:D

(I've allways thought some writer had been watching The Fast Show...)

like i said in the first post "no FRIENDS", please dont be awquared and start posting about american comedy on my 'ENGLISH COMEDY' thread. the fast show picture is fine but come on, leave that other crap show out of this thread.

Hehe I go with Yojimbo all the way on this, Friends has no intelligence within it, jokes are of poor quality. They created too many series of basic rubbish, and its always the same hum-drum semantic field of America life. Like so much activity goes on in one apartment anyway! Anyway like Yojimbo stated this thread is based on English comedy which way surpasses American comedy. I believe this to be because our audience is more educated and understands the connotations of life and apply them too jokes .

...whereas we americans are all idiots who wouldn't know what funny is if it came up and stabbed us in the face.

"I say, you know what's really funny? A man dressed in women's clothing."
"Yes, quite. Ripping good laugh."

Yojimbo
03-16-2005, 06:41 PM
well no you are not all dumb, but the creators of FRIENDS must have been really simple minded. i mean does it really make you laugh....REALLY, its pure garbage.

and there you go silver slagging our humour off because of a single post touching a nerve. i am not getting into one of those stupid "opinion" arguiments again, but american humour doesnt even begin to compare to English humour.

i mean English humour is known worldwide for its success, the funniest thing to come from America on the comedy side, is Oliver Hardy ( Laurel and Hardy), and who was the brains behind that show, it was Stan Laurel the english guy, that fat hardy wanted to go and play golf because he was a boring sod when it comes to it, and i mean if he is your best then god help you.

i mean lets compare the actors, you tell me who on this planet beats John Cleese at comedy.

i think american comedy surpasses british comedy in writing. but british comedy has good actors who can pull off. to be honest, i don't think holy grail looks very good on paper. but there's some magic they put into it that makes it really take off on screen.

if you believe that then you truly are clueless about comedy, even the Americans cant pull stand up comedy off. i just wish i would have made this thread a poll now, because i know that the english comedy would get the vote over american comedy.

please tell me Silver, which american comedy 'surpasses' british comedy, come on which show. you americans tried copying our Red Dwarf (like someone said before) and you didnt pull it off. you started copying shows because you couldnt 'Write' your own.

i'm trying to think of more non-animated shows that i like, but there aren't really many. they're still american though, and i suppose that's what matters.

(btw, i prefer the older episodes of the simpsons...)

let me tell you this, Yojimbo: i hold very high tastes, and if you are so easily entertained, then it's no embarrassment to me.

at any rate, my parents used to watch are you being served years ago... back when i was a kid. i think that's where my aversion to british comedy came from.

Yojimbo

thats my point. they used to watch it years ago and people still like it today, for it is EXCELLENT. give it ten years and F.R.I.E.N.D.S will no longer be known. anyway i feel it is my duty now to put in every single British Comedy to exist. happy reading.

well thats what i have to say, also i am very sorry Mr Locke Cole for writing all of this but i am very passionate. ok lets start over and begin our discussions about what ENGLISH COMEDY shows we like, and why we like them.

actually, they don't watch it at all anymore. i think i tried to bring it up once to my dad, and he just seemed a bit confused. but maybe that's just because he's getting old. >.>

i've seen a few skits and shows i really liked, but i think the one with the most lasting value for me was holy grail. that feels a bit cliche, but dammit! it's good!

Hey im not taking sides so i'll just add what i have to say.
Though british comedy for the most part outshines american comedy there are some real jewels in american culture, as perviously mentioned by silver- The simpsons, Family guy, Futurama, Seinfeld and even the comedy presented by David Letterman is quite intelligent if an aquired taste =D (but still friggin funny).
And as for mentioning crappy shows in american comedy , british comedy has just as many crap shows out there so simply listing every british show gone to air is by no means some stamp of victory in this argument.
Now in regards to standup the same deal applies - from the Americans(and maybe Canadians ...im not sure) you have Robbin Williams (his 2002 live dvd had me in stiches), Eddie Murphy (Delerious + RAW ...nothing else needs to be said), Jerry Seinfeld (his less eccentric stand up still hits the buzzer) just to name a few.
UK Comedians you have have Billy conolly,Rown aktinson and a few funny guys who names escape me at this time. I cant think of any crap stand ups to mention because i currently dont remember any crap stand ups' names.

i'm also not trying to take any sides, but if you're going to list every sitcom every to be on british airways, you should at least check the list first:

The Upper Hand: remake of American sitcom Who's The Boss?

Brighton Belles: remake of American sitcom The Golden Girls

Married for Life: remake of American sitcom Married...With Children

I did not have time to check your entire list, but it wouldn't surprise me if there weren't a couple more on there. And, of course, I certainly know that there are American remakes of "Britcoms" (one of my favorites is one, Sanford and Son)

Again, I think some British comedy is great. And some of it sucks. Just like American comedy. It's really silly, IMO, to decide which is better than the other. Each has their strongpoints and weakpoints.

You may think that I, as an American that prefers American comedy, am "clueless about comedy." But thenon the flipside,I could say that I'd personally think you are "clueless about comedy" if you can't appreciate Eddie Murphy, Frasier, Curb Your Enthusiasm, orselected seasons of Saturday Night Live.

And I'd personally appreciate it if this is truly an "English Comedy" thread, then there should be no mention of American or any other type of comedy: positive or negative. That way, no one's gonna get angry, or offended, or what have you. Either that, or there's gonna be "American Comedy", a "Finnish Comedy", and and "Etc. Comedy" threads, everyone's gonna rip on each other, and my "Alias" thread, if it hasn't already, will drop from the main page. http://www.rpgamers.info/images/smilies/wink.gif

Again, it's all subjective. We're all just squirrels trying to get a nut.

But back to English Comedy. I have a question....how many seasons did Cohen get out in the UK before his gig was really up? I'd like to gauge how long I'm going to be able to enjoy this little nugget of comedy gold.

Peace, love, and Jaegshemesh!

well the only reason American Comedy began to be mentioned was after a post by 'Pikatsu', (and he did it on purpose, hence the smiley).

anyway at long last we can get back on topic. and BJP as for your Cohen question, i dont know but i may consider loking it up for youhttp://www.rpgamers.info/images/smilies/wink.gif

Did you even read the entire post that pikatsu made? Probably didn't. He said that there was an obvious reference on friends towards fast show. The writers of the friends tipped their hat to english comedy. Instead of madly flaming the writers, you could atleast aknowledge their obviously good taste for english comedy.

Yojimbo
03-17-2005, 06:12 AM
yes i did read his post in its entirety, the question is did he "acknowledge" that this is for English Comedy only, i want no word of FRIENDS on here no matter what the circumstances.

and also you seem to like the fast show very much, dont get me wrong it is an 'ok' programme, but it is very repetitive and therefore at the lower end of my fave comedies.

Kilu
03-17-2005, 06:23 AM
Well, we don't get a lot of englisg comedy in here. I suppose the more popular ones, or something like that.

And of course he did acknowledge and stuff, he is just busting your balls, because it's so damn easy.

Yojimbo
03-17-2005, 06:49 AM
the only reason it is easy to get me stressed, is because im very passionate towards my comedy, it is one of the next important things to me after sport and video games.

I would not have mentioned the F word, but I seriously believe that bit was a... homage to The Fast Show, a Great British Comedy. Or is it english?

Lovejoy was very good, too.

And Monty Python. :tophat:

But, as Mao said, "Let all Flowers bloom, and fetch me some DDT, will ya."

Silver why can't u just admit that British comedy is better then American comedy? It seems that America's best comedy shows are those of cartoons. And how can u say that American comedy surpasses British comedy in writing, it takes a degree of skill by actors and most of all on paper to execute a perfect take and that actors dictate the skill from writing to film. This is an argument u cannot win and from the looks of it u are losing.

Personally I think it impossible to admit wich kind of comedy is best. Really it all comes down to ones flavor of comedy. However I kinda like english better just cuz a mojority of it isn't imoral because that's what American comedy seems to have been dumbed down too. I do know that ther are still lots of "sclean" comedy on america but it's getting harder and harder to find. And yes the first things I think of when you say "english Comedy" is indeed Fraiser and Monty Python. man I love that stuff... ^o^

This is an argument u cannot win and from the looks of it u are losing.

By the way Grey Fox. Arguments never were meant for a score board they were ment as a from of comunication to show and comnuicate your understanding of things to another. saying "I win" in an argument will only get you a bad reputaion and will make people ingnore you. I advise you not to continue this act as it may work against you. Please continue to enjoy this site Grey Fox ^o^

03-17-2005, 01:31 PM
yes, there's not much point in arguing if all you're trying to do is win. supposing i am losing, what does that mean to anyone? i still don't like many british comedies, and you are only perpetuating my views. there's nothing you can say that will make me suddenly begin to like are you being served, and you are probably going to make me enjoy the next british comedy i watch even less.

furthermore, there's nothing that makes an animated series inherently any worse than a live-action series. you can argue with all the anime fans on that one.

that being said, i don't want to get too far off topic. Yojimbo and i agreed to stay on peaceful terms on MSN... there are british comedies we all like, so let's continue to talk about those.

(oh, btw... frasier was an american comedy. some of the actors were english, though. but it's not ranked particularly high for me. >.>

anyway... british comedy. continue discussing.)

for the people who know this programme, who are your best characters, and why?

i like probably 'papa lazarou' the best, he is really funny with what he says and the way he looks
"wanna buy some pegs Dave, i got some pegs"

I am back and cannot tell u how really but here is my view on all this and sorry yojimbo i will have to mention american comedy.

Simpsons is without doubt the greatest cartoon of all time...its a classic comedy and I love it, definately one of the best things to come out of america.
Now I don't really know enough american comedies to say which is better, british or american. I suspest british overall.

Now the point about friends is from what I read below, somebody said that british have lots of flat comedies like it too. The thing is, flat comedies that we make don't seem to get so famous. Friends is a typical example of how something crap can get so much attention..like britney spears. I am sorry but friends really ship wrecks me, its unbvelieveable how this canned laughter comedy can ever sell so much. It is the most over rated show i have ever seen...and i would like to add this aint an opinion once again...its a fact. arghhhh friends really stresses me out.

Example: It's like I said *croud laughs* we're supposed to be going shopping later *hahahaha* . But you wouldn't know that you are too busy sleeping most of the time to notice anything *hahahaha*.......just lame

"Nobody told me comedy could ever be this lame, every shows so different but some how all the same. It's like we're always stuck in second gear."

Well Yojimbo, my best character out of the league of gentleman is pop he's a dude
' u will never see Patricia making lesbian action on the floor of an Austrian bar'
Well I stand by my point that Britain uses more cognitive thought into the production of comedies that’s why there are so many hits, which spread along Britain and Europe (and sometimes America) Comedy over in the states just does not compare to British comedy, sure I bet there have been lots of very good comedies in the states but nothing like over here. There have been more comedy productions made here then in the states alone. And why is it that it seems most of America's comedy comes from cartoons?

Yojimbo
03-18-2005, 07:55 PM
well, i think pop is pretty funny "call me pop"

but besides papa lazarou, i enjoy watching the Denton family (the toad man), his obsession with toads and things being clean is totally funny. also the two old women from the charity shop

"whats this good stuff is it, has it got a special mark, if it hasnt got a special mark then its not safe dear.....you could kill a kiddie with this"

English comedy is the best. Two words. Monty Python. It even works in mere text form. Take this for instance, the famous "Dead parrot sketch"

http://www.mtholyoke.edu/~ebarnes/python/dead-parrot.htm

And another favourite that you can read and still enjoy

http://bau2.uibk.ac.at/sg/python/Scripts/TheElectionSketch

It's pure genius and they ahve so many more that you simply HAVE to see.

There are of course many other pioneers of british comedy. But Python are the finest.

yeah ive seen the dead parrot sketch, i believe it got voted the second best sketch of all time, it rules as does monty python (John Cleese especially), im gonna go and buy some of their DVDs soon like 'Life of Brian'.

Rowan Atkinson. Did someone say Rowan Atkinson??
I don't know too much of English comedy but everyone knows Atkinson.

There's one thing about him that bothers me. Everytime I see him in a movie I can't help thinking Mr. Bean. That character is so hilarioushttp://www.rpgamers.info/images/smilies/rofl.gif. I have seen Johnny english and Ratrace but everywhere he goes Mr. Bean is always with him. I don't mean that it would be a bad thing that Atkinson has one such a strong character. It just came into my mind when browsing this thread.

Did you know he fights a stutter? those who have seen Blackadder, listen out for him referring to a character called Bob. The pause and over pronounced B are how he overcomes his old stutter.

Well.....Bob.

Geosgaeno
