I'm with Marona on this one, I use AIM for its file transfer features, however I do have an MSN account for kicking my brothers' butt at the games. I use to be high on ICQ, but haven't logged in for a long time.

Trillian.
:D
I use all of those 4. ICQ and MSN the most, AIM then and YIM some. I mostly have my YIM account because of psf_rippers Yahoo group I'm in, but i have couple contacts in there as well.

trillian lacks certain features i like in the other messengers. at least i think it does... i just tend to see a lot of trillian users with some sort of "this user is using a basic version of whatever" type messages.
anyway... let's see... MSN is down a lot, YIM gives me gas, AIM is simply retarded, and all my friends left ICQ for AIM some time during high school.
so... i'll go with YIM because it has a doodle thing.

no Trillian is the way to go. I've never been off of msn for more then a day, and never had that problem ever for aim. Sometimes file transferrs are tempermental from aim if i recall (that might be fire though). Unlucky for me tonite i just cant seem to connect to msn. I'm sure restarting would fix it but that's too much work.

Personally I use AIM because everyone I know uses it, too. I don't have MSN, and I only know of five friends that use YIM (even though I talk to them a bit). I used ICQ in high school, but once college started, everyone used AIM, so I switched over as well.
I do tend to use YIM when I'm in lab since it's more stealthy. But AIM when at home.
Feel free to talk to me anytime...if you can catch me! Hahaha!
Only thing that is missing/not working properly all the time, is file transfer. But I don't use messengers to file transfer anyway, so HA! Can't think of anything that I would need in it.

actually, they had to mandate the update (ugh... too many dates) because there was a bug in the previous version that let people execute any code they wanted on your system by using a bugged buddy pic.
yup yup yuuuppp.

AOL makes it so that both people sending/receiving a file need to be using the same version of AIM. What kind of sense does that make?

I go for msn and seeing as mircosoft designed it to integrate well into the windows enviroment i generally have no problems what so ever. But as for other msn products such as I.E. ...i say that FireFox is the only way to go...
hey ive got an idea @=D

I personally like MSN.
I had trillian for a while, but then my computer stopped working, and I needed to wait until it was fixed until I could do anything. Trillian takes too long to download...

You're all wrong... The Answer Trillian, duh;) . it has MSN,ICQ,AIM,IRC AND Yahoo... Why woulden't you use it? Unless you don't like the set-up It IS kinda wierd but once you explore it it's very usefull. It checks your email accounts for you so you can quickly log onto it, You can connect to all of your messangers at once and it's got some other cool featuers too:tophat: . I recomend it for thoses who can't decide what they want. And as long as you don't use Trillian Pro. it's free!

yeh i know what you mean silver, like on msn when u want to check your emails it opens an IE window instead of firefox. Maybe i should ask microsoft for help ^_^ (jk).
But seriously does anyone know if theres a patch out or something to fix that?
Yojimbo
03-16-2005, 12:34 PM
yeah thats pretty crap how it doesnt direct itself to firefox, but i just get around that problem by quickly copy and pasting the link into my firefox browser. but if you do copy and paste i think it asks you to enter your password.
its just Microsoft for you aint it.

i use MSN mainly with yahoo on the side.
i started using MSN cause all the people i RP with use it, however i go with yahell for two things, making a JP to the RP board with another player (yahell gives you more letters before forcing you to send than msn does, ALOT more letter) and for voice chats. MSN not only uses more bandwith (importnat since i usualy talk with a guy on a 28.8) but dosent allow a voice conference, so if i want more than one other peron i have to go with yahoo.
MSN also sucks as it wont let you rename contacts, yahoo is the better client, i just use msn mainly because thats what everyone i know uses.

oh, poor ICQ... you used to be the best, and now, you only have one solitary vote.

i think you can go into internet options in ie and uncheck a box that says use ie as default browser.
or something like that anyway.
silverDistortioN
03-17-2005, 01:44 AM
yes, you can. (something like that, that is.) but it doesn't make MSN stop opening up IE when you try to check your mail.
Yup. MSN is a bitch like that. Go Trillian go! :) Trillian opens the mail in whatever browser is your default one. Works for atleast hotmail and yahoo :)
I still use my ICQ account, just not the actual client.

I chose MSN because it looks good and I can contact virtually everyone I know. Why don't I choose a multi-client app ? Just because the two leading solutions (Trillian and Miranda) both have flaws :
- Trillian is a behemoth and takes up waay to much RAM for a plain instant messaging software
- Miranda still has problems with file transfers and doesn't support avatars
Blade Tanaka
03-18-2005, 09:20 PM
Meh that's why you go buy More RAM... Or if you have High speed it dosn't use as much I'd pesume... I don't nkow I use Dial up... heh heh

The problem is not being low on RAM (at least not for me :D ) but to be realistic. A messenger that takes up more than 12 MB is something ridiculous ! It's like seeing winamp becoming a deluxe toaster by featuring burning tools and video support :p
My Trillian takes 8MB. If I start Yahoo, MSN, AIM and ICQ on their own individual programs, they probably will take more than that. As a multi IM user, Trillian is the choice for me in that aspect as well. If I would only use one IM protocol, I would probably use the original client, but that's not how it is in my case.

Granted ! But most people are used to seeing me on MSN so I stick with it. I know several people with a Trillian that takes up 20 or 30 megabytes, that's why I think it's nonsense. However, 8MB is still allright :)

The ability to connect to your MSN account, as well as Yahoo, AIM, ICQ, and something else I forget. If you use more than one, it's worth the switch. If not, then no.

cool, if it is that good i think i will definately take a look and download it, thanks guys.
Yeah. I have a lot of buddies on different IM clients, so I use Trillian. No need to have 4 different clients open when I can have just one. It also connects to IRC. Never tried it though, I like mIRC and it's scripts :)
I don't know about the Pro version of Trillian, but the basic (free) version has always had trouble with filetransfers though. So if you transfer files back and forth with MSN often, I don't know if Trillian is a good choice for you.

I have had messenger for two months or so now and I have used it only couple of times until today when an old friend of mine gave his msn address. I think I'm going to use messenger more often in the future. Nothing bad to say about it yet allthough I still use ICQ more because most of my friends use it.

Holy crap. I just downloaded the newest version of Trillian (3.1 Basic - build 121) and I am damn impressed! I remember just a few years ago I did not like this program at all. But the default skin looks super sweet, and they seemed to have fixed a lot of the problems they had with AIM connectivity. (I can direct connect and send files with no problem and set a buddy icon.) I can still only see text in other users' profiles though (no rich text or html), but I can live with that. Hooray for logged chats and tabbed message windows (probably my two biggest wants).
Thumbs up to Trillian 3.1!

Ah ! At last, someone's liking Trillian ! :spin:
I voted ICQ in the poll, but it's not quite right as I use it in conjunction with Trillian (v3.1 too). I don't like MSN at all ; it sure has lots of "cool" features but I think it's ugly, I don't like the way it opens (or stays open) in your back without notice, and its too large "connectivity" with the whole Windows OS (security problems etc). Not to mention that you can't log your chat sessions etc... I like ICQ because it's the simplest, less crippled with useless "cool" (see the quotation marks ? :p ) features, and creating an account is quicker too.
That being said, I wouldn't like it as much if I wasn't using my ICQ account through Trillian, which has indeed improved a lot since the beginning. :) Now it looks great and has more features (Bama, you should try the "Aikon 3" skin) ; and still cool stuff like chat logs, tabbed chats... Last, I simply appreciate the fact that I can use ONE program for instant-messaging. It sure would suck to have AIM in one corner, MSN in another, and ICQ in another ! With Trillian you can keep things to a minimum and get the job done well in most cases. ^^
My only regret is the funny "live-chat" mode there was in ICQ, I used it a lot some years ago... You know, like an IRC chat but you could really see what the others said as they were typing it - leading to uneasy situations when you typed something too fast and corrected your sentence, as the others could see what you first intended to write... :D
When it comes to messengers that need to be installed I'd say trillian is the best however when on the go I enjoy web messenger (used for msn). Why instal the program when it works just aswell online (minus some of the tools and options).

Well, I voted MSN just because that's the one that the most people I know tend to use, but I concur with the vote for Trillian and it's multitalented uses.
