Hehe, that's precisely what I'm watching right now. I've heard about it by sooo many people, so I gave it a try. I'm currently on episode 2, and I have to say that it looks promising. And the main theme is so great ! I've never heard anything like this in an anime soundtrack http://www.rpgamers.info/images/smilies/bigeyes.gif

Yea I've watched Elfenlied and played it.. Elfenlied was made after the VideoGame Series. The game itself never made its way over the japanese borders.
Hmm.. about the anime. I cant simply give a "rating" without comments. Actually.. I really love Elfenlied. Its an unique anime, because of its story. The story combines good and evil. The violence underlines the romantic and dreamy part of it, because elfenlied's violence is cause by sad feeling. The sad feelings of Nyu. If I'd write it down like a poem, I'd say "A rose might be beautiful, but if you try to steal a leaf, you might get a thorn". And that is exactly what happens in elfenlied.
I can understand that Nyu murders nearly everyone, because humans made her and left her alone. Well, its even more worse. They sealed her.. a human like creature which even got feelings/emotions. She grew up in darkness and bleeded a lot because of experiments done at her.
It's a bittersweet anime with a lot of heart.. so moving. One of the best I've ever watched. Actually.. it nothing which can be simply "consumed". It must be understood and thats very hard. After watching Elfenlied, I had to think a lot to solve the story for myself. So sad and beautiful... even if I type and type.. I wont be able, to explain which feelings Elfenlied awakes. Hmm.. btw. Elfenlied is german and mean "Elven Song", just besides. Elven Song sounds strange if you try to relate it with Elfenlied's story, cause there are no elves neither something like a song. It's also something to think about. I think the sense of "Elfenlied's" title is what I've tried (just tried) to explain. Nyu can be seen as an Elve. If someone starts to sing, he/she tries to tell you a story. Lets go back to where Elfenlied starts. Nyu is hidden in darkness... alone and never saw the sun. She probably sung a lot.. like a elvish girl.. cause she had noting else she could do instead.. she was just sitting there all the time and waited for new painful experiments. She was used to it, to the pain.. because she has never known anything else. It was normal for her... well.
I'm sorry for spoilers, but I couldnt simply say, that I love it. It would have been to less for such an emotional masterpiece.

Edit: I forgot.. for everyone who was moved by Elfenlied. Try Kimi ga Nozomu Eien and AIR. Both of them are made after the Games, like Elfenlied.
They're less in violence but can offer the heart and mysterious flare ElfenLied already offered. Also masterpieces which cant be reached with any words. Watch and love it ^^

Kimi Ga Nozomu Ein didn't strike me nearly as good as Elfen Lied did. It's pretty amazing like i said before some where. As far as dramatic anime goes I also though Koi Kaze was incredibly good, but Elfen Lied is really unique like everyone else is saying. It's teh only action/violent anime that has a series romance and not one of those fake fluffy ones.
