^^ This thread is right in the tradition of "what are you reading / listening to / playing ....etc. right now".
I figure some people here like watching anime, so please tell us about what you have watched recently, your opinions on it, wether to recommend it or not....
:) you get the drift.

I just finished watching "Princess Nine", a pretty good anime about a girls' baseball team in Japan. It was a nice mixture of sports excitement, personal drama, romance and fun, plus a very fitting soundtrack.
I think it is highly recommendable :).

Nothing :D I'm too busy to watch anime, but my brother has some stuff burned for me when I have the time. Cowboy Bebop and GITS stand alone complex atleast.

Some Kenshin episodes. Got them from the middle of the series though so it's a bit hard to follow. Really good though.

I'm currently watching Madlax. If you've like Noir, you'll like it :D
Seriously, I found this anime tremendously fun, and the story is much more complex than it appears at the beginning. :)

I'm on the verge of finishing watching Gundam Seed. When watching the 1st episode, I immediately knew I would appreciate it : space battles, hi-tech mechas, political intrigues, suspense and new surprises in nearly every episode... Just one word : awesome !

I bought a bunch of ripped Studio Ghibli DVDs while I was in the Philippines, and sent it home by boat. Big mistake. It got to me with water damage inside the discs, they were totally unusable. :bawl: What I could salvage made me want the rest so bad! Other than that, Spirited Away was good.

Currently watching:

Beck
Bleach
Genshiken
Grenadier
Gundam SEED Destiny
Initial D Fourth Stage
Monster
Naruto
Xenosaga Animation

There's every week a new episode. Well, sometimes more or less. I'd really like to watch a hit series like rurouni kenshin or record of lodoss war again. But since I already saw most of the old anime I can only wait for new releases. :(

A lot of people say that the naruto and bleach manga are better than the animes. I'm to lazy to read scanlations, so I havent read a single one of them yet, but I think you dont miss anything :)

I haven't seen Naruto yet, but heard a lot of good things about it...
is it really that recomendable?

:( Poor Ephraim, that's too bad about your Ghibli DVDs...I can sympathize with you. They are such great anime, a few of my all-time favourites among them: Totoro, Laputa & Kiki, Mononoke Hime, Nausica...

I never watched any part of the Gundam series...there's so many of them, I didn't know where to start. But it sounds interesting from what you've said so far, Zeugma

Naruto is nice against boredom. It got many genres but is pretty similar to Dragon Ball Z. I've watched all naruto episodes till the current one. I recommend it, if you have nothing more important or better to do. Playing an RPG would be better than watching Naruto, for example.. since its pretty time eating to watch 110+ episodes. Rurouni Kenshin is far better than Naruto. RK, for example, is an must-watch anime, but Naruto.. not really. Well, 12 years old kiddies might love it..
I've watched all gundam series. Wing, Seed and Seed destiny are the best. Its great to watch those.. but the other ones are only interesting for pure mecha fanatics. Wing, Seed and Seed Destiny have got a pretty well background story. Its like 35% mecha action 65% story, such as love between characters etc. ^^

It's not that you miss anything. It's what you avoid.
Long winded dialoge the manga explains or does in a page, and the anime takes a whole bloody episode with. For Naruto anyway, as I said I haven't seen the bleach anime. Manga might be more violent too, but I can't be sure.

PS: Kenshin is grand.

Lessee, lately I've (re)watched Hellsing, GITS SAC 2nd GiG (to 18th ep), some 1st GiG, Grenadier, Sunabouzu (Boinchan! :) ), My Hime, Tenjou Tenge, Elfen Lied, Girls Bravo, DearS, Inuyasha, Read or Die OVA...

And assorted H-stuff... :nana:

But mostly I've been watching Babylon 5...

Bleach is pretty cool. I'm on episode 6 i think.
Just finished Elfen Lied. Blew me away honestly. If your list isn't long enough this should definately go on it. Plus only 13 eps so not a huge time requirement.

I'm in Bleach as well for now...
Before that I had watched Gungrave... Someone had promised me that the plot was fantastic with a surprise-that-changes-your whole-understanding-of-what-you've-seen-this-far... and this never happened (or maybe i missed it ^^;) but it's not really a good anime though..
Hellsing was cool

^^ that's quite a lot you have on your plate, Blade...:D

I never watched Evangelion...is it good?

I have just finished with Saiyuki Reload...it was somehow a disappointment. Not only did they patch the storyline of the Manga in a completely different way together, but the series also lacked emotionality...
very unlike the first two seasons. I mostly blame the music, and the visual presentation...the images lacked energy, and the music was not creating a supporting atmosphere at all....
why didn't they ask Sakuraba again? :( His soundtrack for the first two seasons was grand...

Oh, yeah...how about adding a few lines about what you liked or disliked about the anime you saw? That way, this thread can be helpful for chosing what to watch next.

I never watched Evangelion...is it good?
Evangelion was actually the series that made me watch anime again (that was three years ago). One of my friends showed me the first three episodes on DivX, and I was like http://rpgamers.info/images/smilies/bigeyes.gifhttp://rpgamers.info/images/smilies/bigeyes.gifhttp://rpgamers.info/images/smilies/bigeyes.gif. Even now, EVA is still my favourite anime.

If I had to describe it briefly, the series can be seen on several aspects :

- Action : giant robots designed by mankind and piloted by children. They kick mysterious creatures called 'Angels' out of Japan :D

- Overall themes & symbols : the human desire of knowledge through science and technology, christian religion, hurting other people by loving them

- Psychology : the confrontation of many characters with complex minds. EVA goes way beyond the average reflexion on people's intentions that can be usually seen on anime. We almost have a psychological point of view in some parts of the series.

- Philosophy : this is where many people dislike the series... and other love it. Throughout the episodes, many questions about the human self and the meaning of existence pop out to make us think, which is even more rare in japanimation. Take your time to watch the last 2 episodes, they're kinda hard to understand because of this :D

Have watched Xenosaga 3-4 today. I really start to love it, since its new for me cause I havent played the Xenosaga games. Its more like mecha anime but the anime got a nice bunch of RPG relations. I dont want to spoil but the end of episode 4 is so brilliant. For a short moment, it flew thru my entire body.. awesome ^_^ Might be different for those who already played the game.

Why cant you stand claude? I find he's a very shy and silent character. Like Cloud Strife or Squall Leonheart. I'm just wondering.. or is it because you're a Rena Lanford fan? ;)
Anyway.. I agree. The OST(s) is/are awesome. My faves on both OST's are To the Light, Hearts, Lacure and To the Blue. I'm not 100 percently sure about the titles. Hmmm.. hey.. I could grab them out.. would be an idea. Got both with 320 kbps Stereo. So if anyone wants them, just tell me and I share them with you guys ^_^

Jalk

Yume : First things first, I don't like Rena either ^_^. It's not that they have not an interesting story or whatever but I found their characters very cliché. The shy boy who has grown in his father's shadow or the mysterious girl with a strange pendant... Let's say it already has been seen (I had the same feeling when I played the game).
On the other hand, Celine, Ashton or Opera and Ernest are really great and original characters even if their role is less important. Don't get me the wrong way, I love Star Ocean EX :D
To the Light is great, yes ! I also liked Heraldry very much (it fits very well with the scenes it is used in) and Bowman. I hate bugs and Ashton are ridiculously fuuny too ! :D

Elhaym van Houten
02-03-2005, 02:47 AM
I didn't watch the whole anime - I thought it was pointless after having played through the game....
but I agree with you, Jalk - I thought Rena and Claude were clichéd characters.
Ashton was great :D, my most favourite character in Star Ocean 2nd.

I have started watching .hack sign...I finished .hack udeden a while ago, and it was fun. .hack sign is... strange, for a lack of better words. At least the first four episodes are, maybe it gets better later on. :) But the visual presentation and the soundtrack are great.

Oh... I forgot to check if there are fresh episodes of Genshiken. About Genshiken. I recommend this anime to everyone who would like to learn more about japanese otaku culture. Short Review

Ever wanted to join an anime club but felt its geekiness would hurt your reputation? Sasahara feels your pain. Genshiken, the Society for the Study of Modern Visual Culture, is an organization of college otaku obsessed with anime, manga and video games. Their daily activities include holding impromptu cosplay photo shoots, braving the crowds and avoiding injury at doujinshi conventions, and tolerating harassment by Saki, a girl irked by her boyfriend's otaku-ness! It's a perfect match for Sasahara's interests, so why is it so difficult for him to join?

Genshiken is a "hidden anime". Its very funny and interesting but only a few people know about it. Well.. Fansubs can be found here, in case of interests :)

http://www.anime-faith.com/projects/

watch it and do yourself a favor ;) but dont expect action or something special. The content is making this anime special.

aaaaargh! I've finished AIR Episodes 1-4... this anime is so god damn cute and romantic ;____;" and mysteroius, dreamy... I love it.. its so.. indescribably.
*wants all 12 episodes* ;-.;"
Watching AIR is really like a dream. First thing.. the colors. They're excellent.. animation also. The animation is melting completly with the drawings. Now.. the drawings itself. I bet, nearly all frames would be artworks. So many details.. actually a plasma or beamer would be needed to enjoy AIR at its full offerings. The character design is also awesome.. not to forget the background landscapes. Simply everything fits.
Next point. The soundtrack. Its already old (because it is the AIR Game OST), but its simply awesome. A very clean and melodic sound. It underlines everything else perfectly perfect. The Opening (A Birds Poem) is just.. wow. No words.. you should give it a try ^_^
The Story itself.. hmmm.

SPOILER
In a small town, surrounded by sea and sky, there is a story handed down from a long past. It was a sad love story of a princess with wings and a young man who guarded her.

The princess was confined in a house because of her figure, and she hadnt even seen the outside world. She heard that she had a mother far away, but she could hardly go there. One day, a man appeared. He talked about the world outside and amused her. Without notice, they fell in love. However, she was cursed so as not to love a man.

Kamio Misuzu identifies herself with the princess. Because she often becomes sick, she doesnt go to school and she is always alone. She hasnt even been out of the town. However, she thinks she might have an encounter like the princess in the future. Someday, a young man came to her. His name is Kunisaki Yukito. He is traveling around showing puppet play. He has a promise with his dead mother. It is to save a girl in the air.

A cursed princess and her guard. A girl who identifies herself with the princess and a young man who travels to save a girl in the air. Two stories of the past and the present intersects each other, and their thoughts go beyond the time. What endings will be waiting for them?

Ephraim> It's good but it's not the best Miyazaki IMO

Now that I've seen Elfen Lied (highly recommended), I'm watching the 2nd half of the Fafner in the Azure series.
It's interesting so far, but the scenario is too classic, and the characters are not as charismatic as in the usual anime series (either this, or I'm not getting into the story myself).

I love Miyazaki's works as well - they are among my very favourites :)

I decided not to watch Elfenlied - I'm not such a fan of bloody violence. Maybe I'm regretting it a bit, after I heard a lot of good opinions about it...
if I regret it a bit more, I might go and watch it :D

I'm planning on watching Evangelion soon - I found someone to lend me his DVDs :).
I also try to get Gundam SEED soon...

^^ but at the moment I started watching Trigun :). This is a true classic, really superb. It's been quite a while since I last enjoyed an Anime that much

I am watching "Elfen Lied" now, which originally made by Rin Okamoto.A meaning anime though be full of gore and some nude scenes.I never watched such shocked anime like that, and when I finished an episode I always pondered many things.Humanity, cruelty, sad, psychological hurt, and so on.It really is one of the best anime I ever watched, even better than EVA,maybe.

Elfen Lied was great, but I would not compare it to EVA, they have so little in common...

I finished Ragnarok : the Animation yesterday evening. It was a nice show indeed. Nothing that would make it a legend but still a worthy entertainment that I'd recommend to anyone. What appealed to me most were the bad guys. It's been a long time since I enjoyed evil characters as much as Zephyrus and Keough http://www.rpgamers.info/images/smilies/evilgrin.gif

But I found the complete soundtrack. It was made by Susumu Hirosawa who also did the OST for Berserk and the video games. Good stuff.

YAY! Naruto is coming to adult swimhttp://www.rpgamers.info/images/smilies/dance.gif

Cartoon network finally got tired of all the letters,e-mails,and hookers ive been sending them.

Speaking of hookers i just saw my first *cough* adult anime film. I was like "huh?" most of the time. Lots of screaming that i thought was unnecessary.
I got to see all 3 diffrent kinds, straights, les's,and homo's. I wont be seeing shows like that again for a while. It was overload.

Just finished watching volume 1 of DearS myself. Honestly the premise is strikingly similar to Chobits, with aliens instead of persocoms, however so far, I'm enjoying it about 40 times more than I did Chobits. It's not nearly as slow, it's alot more about the comedy (alot more humor on the ecchi side as well... all I can say is, I laugh hysterically whenever the main character's teacher is on screen) than having tons of "awww" moments... though there are still plenty of those as well.

I don't know what else to say about it other than, I found it really enjoyable, I love the artwork, it's light-hearted and fun for the most part, and I'm definitely looking forward to volume 2. ...plus, the music is irresistably cute. :D

Also, if anyone here happens to be a Gravitation fan, Yamaguchi Kappei (Ryuichi Sakuma's seiyuu) has a decent role as the main character's best friend. So maybe that could interest some. ^_^;

Appleseed 2004 ? I didn't really enjoy this one. After seeing The Spirits Within and Ghost in the Shell 2 - Innocence, Appleseed looked like cheap 3D with an average story to me :wonder: Especially when they go on a car trip around the city, or when I first saw the chairman's hair O.o

- Still watching my usual weekly series, plus Mahou Tsukai ni Taisetsu na Koto, that I got on a bunch of DVDs that I have to give back in four weeks.
This series is what I would call a nice drama, but so far, there's nothing outstanding -

Just finished watching Steamboy. Its ok. I still dont see why its the most costly anime movie ever made. Not really worth the 20 million dollars.
I give it http://www.rpgamers.info/images/smilies/star.gifhttp://www.rpgamers.info/images/smilies/star.gif and http://www.rpgamers.info/images/smilies/thumbs_up.gifhttp://www.rpgamers.info/images/smilies/thumbs_up.gif. It lost a star because the story didnt take place in japan like i had thought. Japan had a good but brief steam age. Good engines and designs.

Me too :D SEED Destiny has excellent music & animation, but the scenario isn't worth much. There were good ideas that have turned to spectacular nonsense in the end. The first season was definitely better, imo :wonder:

I'm also watching Gundam 08th MS Team (less epic, more centered on the pilots and their feelings, which is a good point), Gungrave (totally AWESOME so far :amazed: ) and Full Metal Panic! The Second Raid (the best of the three seasons, from what I've seen).

I recommend bitlord for download as it allows you to select which files of the torrent you want before downloading it (ie. instead of an entire cd you can just download specific songs off the cd, or one for that matter). And compared to azureus it doesn't eat up as much system resources though the downloads tend to go faster with azureus . . . . really it's up to you, there are numerous torrent downloaders but only a few of the torrent search engines are worth while, I recomend www.newnova.org, it's a remake of www.supernova.org which got shut down but then some guy bought the format and it's as good as ever though because its still in the works you have to browse the site rather than search for a file directly.

Currently watch episodes 8-13 of Full Metal Alchemist, and locke should you read this post I'm putting them on CD so you can watch them, seeing as how we only got to watch the first 2 DVDs. They are the same english DUBS.

Naruto in the non-...now I want to use a word here that I probably shouldn't, so I'm going to instead go with "Sissified"- version, as well as good old Inuyasha.

I am also reading a strange Tsubasa Manga a friend of mine gave me. It's convieniently volume 2 and I've never read the first one, and the series reminds me a whole lot of Gundam.
You may ask what a story that could possibly be described as a mutant offspring of Pokemon, and Tenjou Tenje, drawn (I'm told) by the folks who did Cardcaptors, could possibly have in common with giant robots hacking and blasting one another apart for various goals in space... So I guess I shall explain.
With some anime, (Or manga) the story eddies along and unravels skippily to the viewer, and characters occasionally summerize past events or repeat themselves, (Inuyasha for example) The Gundam series, I have never seen do this in any way. Granted I have not seen much in the way of Gundam, beyond a 12 episode marathon of Gundam Wing's premire dozen episodes. I watched those fully, and had no idea what in Sam Jebus was going on the entire time... So I gave up on giant robots for the most part. In Tsubasa I have read only the second book, but I clearly have to have full backround on the series to have any hope of deciphering the plot.
That's how they're the same, at least for me.

Well I'm not wacthing much these days. Just Japanese Naruto on the weekend. I will have to steal some Bleach frpm you Lance.

And Astro. The way you describe Tsubasa Chonicles is nothing the way I remeber it. It is done by Clamp but I don't remeber too much Gundam Stuff. BTW I do believe it is Tenjo Tenje, (I'm not sure) But I do own the first Vol.

Tsubasa in the long run Is about an archeologist kid who's best friend (the Princess from the land he originated) Went into a coma and lost her momory. So now they're travaling through all of the other worlds (AKA every single Manga that clamp has done, IE Syrian (can't remeber how to spell it) and Sakura are from Cardcapters. And Modoko Monoki the white puff ball is from The Magical Knights Mangacan't remebr the name of this one either.)

Anyways it is an AMAZING series so enjoy it and try not to give up on it.

1. It's GREAT!
2. IT'S GREAT!

No seriously, it's by far the best anime that I've seen lately.

Well, the story can be explained as many things depending on your point of view but still, it's great.

Some see, the passage of Shinji from childhood to adult, some others see the achievement of the "instrumentality project"...and some others see the religious symbolism of the series.

You just can't be deceived by it. And what to say about the movie...

I finished watching Fate/Stay Night a while back and I really liked it. The music was particularly nice too but...Episode 24's Last Final Ending Song seems to be the most MYSTERIOUS song because the credits don't give the name of who sung it or what the name of the song even is. It's not in any of the Fate/Stay Night OSTs and there seems to be no person or website that even has a clue about it either.
