View Full Version : What are your favourite RPGs?
Not just one, because that is too cruel and too hard to decide anyway.
And notice the phrasing of the title. I'm not asking the best RPG of all time, I'm asking your favourite RPGs. Opinions, more specifically, your opinion, not the masses. Try not to diss other people while you're at it.
Conversation is encouraged, but keep it civil. We have working moderator tools here, unlike in the old forums :)
Also, it might be good idea to try and put in some reason for liking the games you like. Whether it's story or battle system that keeps you coming back to the games, it's always worth of mentioning.
Edit: Thanks Locke for changing the thread typo from 'is' to 'are' :p

What are, you stupid dipswitch.
FF7, and Suikoden, I should think.
Whatever dude. I added the 's' in there later because choosing only one game might be difficult for some. Nevertheless, I'm sure I will see worse english than that in here, so it doesn't matter.

No need to argue.
My favourite RPGs would have to be.... hmm, tough question. Well, first I would say is Final Fantasy 6, since I adapted one of the characters' names as my identity on the Internet. :D
Honourable mentions go out to the Lufia series, Suikoden II, FF Tactics, Disgaea: Hour of Darkness, and of course Chrono Trigger. All good games, for their own reasons.

Well one of my favorite games I would have to say is Xeno Gears =D
That game rocks. The Xenosaga series so far, Epsiode 1 -_- was disapointing but it was intresting to play. I hope the 2nd one comes out in english soon. I relly wanna play it, but other then that Disgaea is also a favorite and also the Front Mission series. It's a relly good series and I recommend it to everyone.

Does Magic: The Gathering count as an RPG? I mean, you play the role of a guy who controls all this magic and these creatures, and all this land (mana) and stuff.. its like an RPG with cards. You even have HP :p
Probably not though, eh? Ah well. :flagca:

hmm i recently learned how to paly shadow run and i have to say i love it, never mind the realy awesom sniperrifle i have, the game system is entirely different, its eaiser to learn than dnd and uses a d6 pool instead of the d20 system, because of this you cant power game as easily, there are tasks that are flat out impossible no matter how good you are (sniping a moving target through cover while you move at extreame range in bad weather) since its d 6 pool as you get better instead of adding a modifier so its easier to roll higher you simply get more dice in your pool (more chances to hit the target number) but you cant add the dice together each roll is a seperate chance, however if you roll a 6 you can roll that die again and ad the two numbers (thats the "rule of 6" so its possibe to get really high by rolling alot of 6's in a row but VERY hard, this removes the most common problem of most rpgs, that is power gaming. its very enjoyable and the battely system is better, in stead of HP you have a limited number of wounds (you simply get the chanve to avoid damage) and as you take wounds your abilites are lessened to represent your impairment. (target number goes up making any task harder, your initative lowers representing your inability to move quite as quickly) makes combat more realitsic.
i once would have said D&D but not any more as ive suffered through too many games with poor players or worse DM's or even both. (although it was always fun to play with kiata he always had really cool characters (proven by the fact that danath alwaysw copied the idea as fast as he could :D) and as fro video game RPG's, well.. they have all kind of blurred into one big lump for me and since my PS2 was stolen ive been unable to play any :D))

you'd imagine they'd put it the other way around...

I can never choose my favourite RPG it's sort of a mixture of Final Fantasy, Grandia and all those RPGs for SNES I downloaded. :p
They all seem to follow similar styles yet somehow keep original storylines.
you can't say what is your favorite rpg without really asking more detail. role playing games have genres within genres. action-rpg, tabletop-rpg, etc...
unless it was under the videogame topic not just gaming rpg . . . . . . . . i'v forgotten my point, all well
the ff games are my favorite and perhaps the exile game by spiderware.

Rudra No Hihou. Never translated officially. Ruyji Sasai did the musics. As much as I played it a while back, it seemed decent enough. I think Elhaym likes it a lot.
And btw, I just noticed that I haven't answered this thread myself just yet. So here goes.
By far the favourite RPG of mine is Treasure Hunter G. Awesome music, interesting battle system, awesome music, good plot and awesome music :) It as it all, not to mention the awesome music. Best SNES RPG, best RPG of all time. And did I mention that it has awesome musics?
Close behind is a mass of Grandia, Vagrant Story, Suikoden, Alundra, Zelda Wind Waker and probably couple others that I can't think of right now.

I'm not sure if all of these are RPGs (I know some people have different ideas of what makes an RPG, and we should deter from starting that argument again here), but here's some of my favorites: Suikoken 2, Illusion of Gaia, ActRaiser 1, any Zelda game, Secret of Mana (naturally), and Chrono Trigger (of couse). Ones that I like but I don't play very often are: FF6, FF9, and Dragon Warrior/Quest 4 and 7 (though I've only beaten DW4). I really tend towards the SNES games.

Love the music in BOF3 and all final fantasy's bar 10-2. Storylines are all cool and I want so much to play FF12 and BOF5;)
PS finished Mario World for SNES yesterday with all 96 exits, did it super fast and I was expecting it to be much harder;)

The more recent favourite rpgs of mine would be Morrowind, due to you being able to due almost anything in it, and Fable, because I finally had the option to kill off all those characters in the game who annoyed me to no end.
Of the older favourites, I would need to say pretty well all the ff's except for 11 (it was to long to do anything. I mean, I don't mind spending 100 plus hours on a game, but I like to see a little bit of progress after putting all that time in), Treasure of the Rudra's, Treasure Hunter G, Bahamut Lagoon, Chrono Trigger, All of the secret of * games, Tales of Phantasia, Star Ocean, ... etc. I'm sure that there is many more games that I would add to the list, I just can't recall them at this moment.

Yep I used to enjoy Shadowrun when I was GM for it. it was good and the dice was cheap. I played it with all three versions before FASA died :bawl:
however I could never find a good replacement for any of the FASA games ( mechwarrior, Battletech, Earthdawn and all ) now it is in the hands of a german distro and damn near hard to get. I still have book 1-3 and the GM shield.

though, I'll stick with Xenogears,
followed by Lunar Eternal Blue and Final Fantasy Tactics
...
.....
and then there follows a looong list of favourites, like FF 5, FF 6, FF 7, FF 9, Vagrant Story, Chrono Trigger & Chrono Cross, the Breath of Fire Series, Lufia 1 & 2, Star Ocean, the Seiken Densetsu Series, the Ogre Battle Series, Valkyrie Profile, Skies of Arcadia...
wow, this might get a bit too long, I realized
^^ I remember some debates with a friend of mine about wich game was best - and I always told him I had quite a range of No. 1s
It's just that many RPGs have their good points, and their weak points, and that I simply can't say "That one is more my favourite because of...", because then I remember some good details of another one and think "This one was also pretty good, maybe it's my favourite..."

This year so far my favorite RPG is Fallout 2. It really blew me away. This game was made with alot of love and care. At first I thought this isnt a RPG just a slash and kill game. I was wrong. I havent played a RPG with this much detail in a long time.
When I started playing all I did was kill, steal, whoreing, gambling and slaveing all through the post apocalyptic earth.Of course I started over and started to be a goodie two shoe and what a diffrence it had on the story line and quests.
When I was evil my stats were, child killer, slaver, grave robber, porno star and a 136 karma but I was strong as hell. Now I am a hero, champion, prize fighter, karma 6859-savior of the damned.
I havent finished it yet. Im in the enclave.
I have the bad habit of playing a RPG for a while, stop, and start on another and go back to it sometimes months later.

My favorite RPG's: System Shock 2, Deus Ex 1, Gothic 1 & 2, Dungeon Siege, Diablo 1, Fallout, Chrono Trigger, and Earthbound.
This isn't the usual list, but that's because I really hate turn-based fighting and thus haven't played the more usual ones. The only reason I got through Fallout was because of the "bloody mess" trait. Seeing a chunk of someone's ribcage fly out gave me enough patience to wait my turn. With Chrono Trigger, it wasn't QUITE turn-based and it was exotic enough to keep me tagging along. That and I could see the enemies coming as opposed to random encounters. Finally, I think Earthbound kept me going because it was so trippy. I don't do drugs, but if I did, that seems like exactly the kind of game I should play after dropping acid.

FFTA? The second totema is the red crystals right? Just engage when the world laws forbid "Charm" and hit them from more than a space away. There essensially helpless.
PS. I find this a good time to use moves that don't damage to level up characters.
PPS. Or is the second Andremalech? if so try to incapacitate the dragons guarding him and take him out with heavy hitters, I used a fighter, and a ninja.
(Oh and try not to set you guy's in a stright line at any point, becase of that move he does, I think its called "Firestream" or something, damages in a straight line from him.

HA i play them all the time and look at me.....wait never mind no they are not evil and anyone who thinks they are should realy do some research befor saying anything like that
Oh, DnD I heard was really evil >.>
DnD is directly related to devil worshipping. Everyone knows this. Right? RIGHT?

sigh and let me guess god made man then woman and george bush didn't rig the election the world is flat and the sun circles it lol i'm just joking but still i mean if D&D was a tool of satan then why is it all the adventurs and such are for good players? i am playing in a evil game and damn it its hard cause being anti heros means the dm has to work twice as hard to come up with stuff

omg! blatant instrument of the devil! =o
I think maybe it was related to the devil, because that there is like a new God, meaning the gamemaster. Because, you have to follow everything they do and blah blah blah, plus it might have any other satanic relationships.
There are demons and monsters in it. Obviously it's tool of Satan! Miroslav Satan!

What, D&D is a tool of satan? nonsense! It is a perfectly healthy activity for the average person. Now if you will excuse me I have to sacrifice a small woodland creature on a stone alter in my room. (Just kidding.) But seriosly, D&D is fun, and as to Kilu's last comment, I try to KILL the deamons and monsters...
PS: Is it spelled Demon or Deamon? or are both used?
I think Deamon is a name, >.>. Today this kid in my class had a DnD Book, and so I asked my teacher if he's ever played it, and he told me he has been playing it for 20 years. Then I asked if he lived in his mom's basement, all he said was his mom didn't have a basement lol.

HAVE to listen to the DM? :ponder:Well they have something like the last word, but you decide for yourself what to DO.
(Also it seems that every time we play a lot of time is spent argueing with the DM.) Anyway, I also like the FF series, and the Neverwinter Nights games.
Wow you must play a lot of DnD, hehe that's cool. I really wouldn't know all the total rules like when to listen to the DM or not. But NWN Is just like DnD, right? But I do agree with you FF is awesome =).

hmm for me i Dm alot and i find the players never listen realy they just try to find ways to piss me off like doing smart things that i did not think of and they make it so easy for them thats when i send in the demons and such
I listen to DM, but in the end I make the choices. If I choose to do something that DM didn't think of, good DM improvises. And does that fast.

You mean like when one of the players insists that if you turn a bag of holding inside-out, and wrap it around yourself, you can walk through walls?
That really got on our DM’s nerves...

more like there traped in a cave with a half dragon vampire montain troll (51 str baby yeah) bend on killing them when one of the players casts enlarg on his bag of holding then reduce on the trol then they grapple hm and stuff him in the bag wait ten minutes and poof dead troll

Ok, Now I have to admit, that's a good one.
But I think (not sure on this) that casting enlarge on a bag of holding messes up it's properties somehow.

Wow, i havent been on this site in months, its definately changed. Anyhow the answer to the question is that the Final Fantasy games are the outright best although i bet some of you guys differ.
My personal fave has got to be FF7:thumbup: shortly followed by FF9 & FFX. What went wrong with FFX-2 though.:(

I'd need to add Tale's of Symphonia to my fav. list, and toss in that I've now gone back to Chrono Trigger to see what I can do in it (plus it's been about 2 years since I've beaten it, so I figured it's about time I played through it again).

Haven't played Tales of Symphonia yet, but it looks like a lot of fun.
I cycle my games too, so that by the time I replay one I've already forgot all my tricks. They come back as I play of course, but I try to ignore them and play differently each time.

I'm currently up to 4 of the endings in chrono trigger and my 3rd new game plus :D . I figure I may as well beat it properly while I'm at it. Also on my 3rd run through ToS too, for what it's worth. Cyclign your games just seems to make sense. There's only so many good games out there, so if you are serious about playing them then it makes sense to play them a couple times. :D . Anyways, that's my 2 cents.

My favorite game of all time would HAVE to be Final Fantasy VII, the international version, the ONLY one (or at least that i've seen) where you can bring Aerith back from the grave!
bring Aerith back from the grave!

well u can bring aerith back with a gameshark. perhaps that is what he/she means.
my fav rpgs have to be FF7,9,8,6,x2 Chrono trigger/chross
and newly added tales of symphonia (i've had it rented for 4 weeks now . . . . suppose i should just buy it :P)

Or return it... You might want to just throw it in the deposit and never go to that place again with the late fee's you have likely racked up.

Call me sceptical, but for some reason I doubt that's what he/she means.
if not then i am interested in this "international version" with supposed alternet storyline. . . . . . . . perhaps they were playing ff8
anyways the game is cheaper to renew the rental than it is to go in and re-rent it again for the week so i just have to call in once a week and it is around $10 week. (though i suppose i have already given them enough to have bought it in the first place)

Our video place won't let you renew stuff, because we want to, and allowing it would make us happy. We have to pay the rental fee over and over, as a result I rarely rent games. I borrow them from friends and buy them if they are good.

Hmmm, for the most part I am still satisfied with my list from way back when. How about that? :p I didn't mention games such as Robotrek, Secret of Evermore, and Parasite Eve, all worth honourable mentions too. Heck, I could probably list many.
Well, this is officially our first multipage thread. w00t. I never knew so many of us played paper and pencil RPGs. I personally have never played one, but would give it a try had the opportunity come up.
This was my true reason for reviving this thread, happened to see me mention this was the first multi-page thread on the boards. Woo, its been awhile. This section of the boards has been sleeping. :emlaugh:
