I haven't read anything in ages. I have been meaning start the Dark Tower series from the beginning as soon as the newest books are translated and ordered into the city library. Newest as in 5th and 6th ep.

I like the Wheel of Time series.
I have read the first book and it was relly good. I havn't had the will power to go out and buy the 2nd book tho. Just out of sheer lazyness and not having the cash to get it I guess.
But it's a good series and I suggest it to anyone who can handle there weird magics and other stuff.
I give it a 7 out of 10.

I just ordered this: http://www.firaxis.com/smac/story.cfm. It has the first two parts of the story on that page, to anyone who is interested. If anyone has played Alpha Centauri, this should be pretty familiar.

I'm having to read A Rumor of War (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/080504695X) for history class. It's about a guy who went off to fight in Vietnam in the very beginning of the war and later became a jounalist. So far it's good.

TDK: I've tried to read that book Good Omens, as a few people have told me how good it is, but I keep getting bored after a few pages. Does it get better after the first chapter?

I'm still reading "The Resistable Rise of Arturo Ui"....a play my drama teacher wants me to read. -_-
Not very fun, it sort of follows the rise of Hitler but with different characters and stuff.
Not recommended. :)

However, I'm also reading a nice big chunky book all about Ancient Egypt. I recommend. :D

:D I finished Watership Down by Richard Adams just last night. The story details the adventures of a group of rabbits as they search for a place to live, and all the obstacles that come into their path. As silly as the concept may sound to some, being from the point of view of the rabbits isn't stupid at all. I found this book an excellent read (again, since it was my second go ;)) and highly recommend it to all of you maroons. :bouncy:

:wonder: I've seen it - in fact, I own it on dvd. While the animation isn't anything to brag about technically, from an artistic standpoint it arguably has merit. But I will agree with you that your nan was daft - this animation is a bit edgy for small children. :spin:

I've been reading "The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui" (a sort of twisted comedy about Hitler's rise) and decided it's a pretty good play after all.

The guy who wrote it never went to Chicago yet the majority of it is in Chicago stereotyped gangster style and the comedy is kinda hidden but it's there. ;)

I've at last finished A Son of the Circus, which was overall a good book ; interesting characters and plot, with a nice sense of humor and a taste for concurring events... It's still a kind of relief for me to be done with it, because it took a looonnng time to read ! About 600 pages in English, when you read in the subway and the bus, it's not that easy (I don't think I had ever read a "real" book in English before). That let me realize I might want to wait more years before (if) I ever attempt at reading The Lord of the Rings in English... (I'd like to, because the French translation isn't nearly as good. The names are great and the overall quality is very fine, but there are lots of omissions - some songs left out, some words translated a misleading way, some sentences cut off... There aren't that many of them but it's enough to motivate a fan to get the original novel one day. :) ) Anyway, my rating for A Son of the Circus shall be : :star: :star: :star: • •

Right now, I chose the easy way and read a short book - in French ! :p It's the famous Peter Pan. Gigi has always been a fan of the book (she's always been a bookovore ^^), she saw the Disney anime, she saw the recent movie (which she liked because it was faithful to the book, unlike Hook)... And was astonished that I had never read it, nor seen the Disney version - only Hook (which was funny anyway :) ). So far I like it, the style is nice and the story is very imaginative. ^^

I just finished reading two books by the same author: Kurt Vonnegut

I don't know if many of you have heard of Slaughterhouse Five and of Cat's Craddle. The author is mainly known for his anti-war position and his thought that man is the devil and we will be the destroyers of the planet.

Anyway, these books are interesting, funny sometimes but nothing great if you ask me. In Cat's Craddle the protagonist is a midget which is quite unusual! At some point in the book, some men says that midgets are only there to distract and entertain "normal people" in moments of boredom. It made me laugh! :D

As for Peter Pan, I have to read the original book now that I have seen the movie at least 30 times. I bought the DVD and I watch it whenever I have the time. That'S where my famous Hook impersonation comes from! ;)

:D I keep forgetting to post in here. I finished Soul Harvest and Apollyon, which are the next two books in the Left Behind series. The preachy tone, I'm afraid, is there to stay, and while book four had some nice humor in it, both these have a decent amount of action. So... :star::star::star::star: and :star::star::star:, respectively. Overall, at this point I'm not even sure I'd recommend the series - there's a lot of filler that waters down the works as a whole. :bouncy:

I've finished Peter Pan (was a short read actually :) ) and I liked it. It's a weird kind of fairy tale, like written for kids but going into themes only adults can understand... Anyway, it was interesting and well written ; but the ending is rather sad, when you think about it. Ah, the melancholy ! :spin: That's a :star: :star: :star: • •

I've started Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes just last week, which looks like a classic for many people. Gigi gave it to me, and warned me of the sadness in the end... I must say the theme is appealing (a retarded adult progressively becomes a genius thanks to modern science, but the operation isn't stable and he witnesses his own regression to the simplest mind) ; in fact I read it in less than a week. Well... I almost read it ! I'm almost at the end, but forgot the book at Gigi's so I haven't had a chance to finish it yet ! XD She'll bring back the book on next week, I'm eager to know the end. So far I give it a :star: :star: :star: :star: •

Meanwhile, I couldn't stand not to read anything because of the missing book, so I looked for a short read until next week. Gigi gave me The Time Machine by H. G. Wells since I've mentioned my interest after watching the movie recently (which was rather good :) ). I think I've read it already, if only part of it, when I was a kid... I even remember the cover of that French edition. ^^ Anyway, that was too long for just a week, so I changed my mind and started Skeleton Crew by Stephen King - again ! I've read that book some years ago, but always wanted to read it again just for the short novel The Mist it contains ; I loved that story. So I'm reading that part of the book, and probably that other short story named Mrs. Todd's Shortcut which has a great lovecraftian flavour, I think. I can't give my rating yet for those stories in Skeleton Crew though, you'll have to wait a bit. ^^

I finished Assassins, Book 6 of the Left Behind series about the Apocalypse, and while it deals in part with the assassination of the Antichrist, it has less action and drama than one might expect, hence its rating: :star::star::star:

I also read the third Harry Potter book, The Prisoner of Azkaban, and found it as delightful as the previous works. I think so far I'd rate them 2, 3, and then 1 in order of my preference. :star::star::star::star::star:

:) I finished Armaggedon :star::star: and Glorious Appearing :star::star::star:, which wraps up the Left Behind series. The latter has to be one of the most preachy, repetitive, padded (as in, with useless filler) works I've had the (dis)pleasure to read in a while - not that the entire series hasn't suffered for the same; these last two just seemed to do it more than normal, especially the last. Unless you don't wading through twelve books worth of wasted print to find the three or four books worth of actual real reading, I wouldn't recommend that any of you maroons start it. :spin:

well i recently blew 40 buks at a used book store and got my self two big bags of books so im reading quite alot however to be specifc i jsut finihed reading a wonderfull sereis by barbara hambly, i uhh seem to have forgoten the serse name however the book titles are "the time of the dark" "the walls of air" and "The Armies of daylight"

those are listed in reading order by the way. and ah! in the coures of writing this my brain has jumped started, the series is called "the darwath trilogy" . i read it once LONG LONMG ago, (were talking liek grad 4 here folks) and i never got to finish it, so when i found it in the book store, for 3 bucks a book (and first editions no less) i jsut couldnt resist, i picked up some oter classicls like the first three books for the sword of shannara series, the mistress of the empire series by janny wurts and raymod e feits, a compainon triliogy to go with feist's riftwar. i also picked up 4 out of the 5 darksword books, the entire trilogy and the darksword adventures novel, fourtnately i alreday own the fifth. and i belevie ill start readign the darksword adventures once im done posting here.

now my only problem is i own more books (by volume) than the rest of my possesions combined (not inclding the computer) so where the hell am i gonna put them all?

i also picked up the hicth hickers trilogy of four for only 20 bukcs so im gonan get aroudn to reading that sonner or later i imagine.

on a final closing note, i need more anne McCaffery books, she wites good stuff.

kilu: you post often on these fourms in english just fine i dont imagine you haveing much trouble with a novel or two, though i supse nto ahving english as a first language may make it harder to notice when the author has made up their own word (common in the types of books i read) or is simply using some obscure english

Ahh, Reading, I tend to read more than one book at a time. Currently I am reading The Golden Compass, Shogun, and The Lone Drow. Right now I'm reading The Thanatonauts by Bernard Werber (not sure of the English title, this is a simple translation of the original French title) ; the story of four "pioneers" who try and explore the afterlife (first they need to check if there actually is an afterlife ^^) and thus call themselves the first thanatonauts (from the Greek word "thanatos" = "death").

It's not a creepy book at all, and being written by Bernard Werber you can expect a high-quality novel. :) Just like in the Ants trilogy, the story is intriguing yet simple to read, the theme is original, and there are many clever ideas that sure will make you think later on.

The Thanatonauts is the first of three books following the same story ; the 2nd being Empire of the Angels (which I have already read and plan on reading again after The Thanatonauts) ; the 3rd being We, Gods (just released in France a few weeks ago - haven't read it yet).

Then It's back to the book store's!
This city has most of the old book store's on one big street in the north side. I call it the book district. I can be there for hours looking at old book's. I do have one problem and thats the book mites. Im terribly allergic and half the time I cover my nose with a handkerchief while browsing.
I hate the new book store's like crown's or boarder's with a coffee shop in them. I avoid them like the plague. There all over the place.

3 Screw unto others- Revenge tactics for all occasions. (this one is actually a real book)

7 How to rule the world- a handbook for the aspiring dictator.
8 How to end your dependace on self help books.
9 The seven spiritual laws for makeing an obscene fortune.
10 How to heal the hurt by hateing.
11 So you want to be a whore?
12 501 great things about being a lesbian.
13 The hangover help guide.
14 Life, the final frontier.
15 How to stay fit and healthy until your dead.

I just finished reading "The Age of Reason" by Thomas Paine. It's his idea's about religion, and for some reason they are a bit anti-christian .... so it's up to you whether you would like to read it or not. It's a very well written book, and he backs up everything. If anyone fancies a philosophical/religion-based book, I would recommend it. Incidently, he is also the writer of the American Declaration of Independance, just for some trivia knowledge for everyone :P .

I'm currently reading Jane Austen's "Emma", by reading I mean the 1st 3 pages and by Jane Austen I mean annoying old woman who ignores the basic ideas of grammar and punctuation.

I'm sure some of the sentences make no sense whatsoever and it's written in a really weird way that I can't put my finger on. O.o

Why is she classed as such a wonderful writer? Maybe in those days she was because all the rest were crap, but I think literature should evolve with the times. The reason Shakespeare plays are so popular and have been remade into modern films is because they are still appropriate in modern day life and have the same lessons in them. All those old books just seem to be full of people called Fanny who wear bonnets, can't stand them! :p

I read a great book lately.
The title is 'Ghostwritten' by David Mitchell.
It's hard to describe what the book is about - does not have a linear plot, but consists of a lot of individual stories, with each time a different main character, from whhose perspective the story is told. All those stories are linked at various ends, and they all blend together in the end.
I couldn't stop reading it, it was just too good and had me absorbed til the end.

Well when I say we did that, we sort of used it.

We had to write our own drama piece for an exam and our story was set in a theatre and the play at the theatre was "A Streetcar Named Desire". It was sort of a look into the behind the scenes of a big show. Then at the end, my character died in a fire after a lighting accident. I was mortified, they killed me off!! :bawl:

I'm reading U. S. Grant's personal memoirs. Yes, the former president and general during the Civil War. It's actually very interesting, with detailed accounts of his time at West Point, the Mexican War, and the Civil War. I don't think it deals with his presidency at all, though. It was probably a sore subject for him since he had some pretty corrupt administrations. (Keep in mind, though, that the man himself was very honorable. It's a shame he was too trusting.)

I was in a korean 99.cents store that was going out of buissness and bought a bunch of cute Gamzadori books, notepads, pencils, double sided tins and journals. I just could'nt pass it up. So colorful and cute.
A lot of the writing is in korean but some is in english. Here's a sample:

Once upon a time,there lived a child
in the Sweet Potato's Village.
His father was a cloggy sweet potato and
his mother was a beutiful watery sweet potato.
He had a cute little twin sister named Coco.
The twins skin colors were particularly yellow.
The two children grew up to arrive at puberty.
Brother became manly and sister became lovely.
Other friends who arrived at puberty
changed into red hard cloggy sweet potatoes
and pink watery sweet potatoes.
However, the Gamzadori twins only turned more yellow.
Gamzadori asked his mother,
"Mother,why are we this yellow?"
So one day, their mother made beutiful cloaks for the twins.
That is how the red-cloaked Gamzadori came about.

The rest is in korean.
And there's a cute picture of a walking sweet potato with a red kimono and a sun hat.
Does any one know more about them? There's nothing on the web.
I must find out the whole story.

My dad is a fan of his, and has read most to all of his books. So I just steal them from his. His earlier books are definitely better than the newer ones, but they're all still good reads.

And Blade, you are allowed to hate Biology! I know plenty of people who hate it. I love it simply because I love learning about why things are the way they are, or learning how certain aspects of humanity work (such as the immune system). But I agree with you about physics!

An excellant book that I'd recommend for anybody that likes sci-fi mixed with a smattering of psychology, philosophy, and military strategy. THE DUSTJACKET BLURB HAS BEEN REALEASED FOR THE NEXT WHEEL OF TIME BOOK 'KNIFE OF DREAMS' READ IT HERE

http://www.rpgamers.info/images/smilies/spoiler.gif

The Wheel of Time turns, and Robert Jordan gives us the eleventh volume of his extraordinary masterwork of fantasy.
The dead are walking, men die impossible deaths, and it seems as though reality itself has become unstable: All are signs of the imminence of Tarmon Gai’don, the Last Battle, when Rand al’Thor, the Dragon Reborn, must confront the Dark One as humanity’s only hope. But Rand dares not fight until he possesses all the surviving seals on the Dark One’s prison and has dealt with the Seanchan, who threaten to overrun all nations this side of the Aryth Ocean and increasingly seem too entrenched to be fought off. But his attempt to make a truce with the Seanchan is shadowed by treachery that may cost him everything. Whatever the price, though, he must have that truce. And he faces other dangers. There are those among the Forsaken who will go to any length to see him dead--and the Black Ajah is at his side....
Unbeknownst to Rand, Perrin has made his own truce with the Seanchan. It is a deal made with the Dark One, in his eyes, but he will do whatever is needed to rescue his wife, Faile, and destroy the Shaido who captured her. Among the Shaido, Faile works to free herself while hiding a secret that might give her her freedom or cause her destruction. And at a town called Malden, the Two Rivers longbow will be matched against Shaido spears.
Fleeing Ebou Dar through Seanchan-controlled Altara with the kidnapped Daughter of the Nine Moons, Mat attempts to court the woman to whom he is half-married, knowing that she will complete that ceremony eventually. But Tuon coolly leads him on a merry chase as he learns that even a gift can have deep significance among the Seanchan Blood and what he thinks he knows of women is not enough to save him. For reasons of her own, which she will not reveal until a time of her choosing, she has pledged not to escape, but Mat still sweats whenever there are Seanchan soldiers near. Then he learns that Tuon herself is in deadly danger from those very soldiers. To get her to safety, he must do what he hates worse than work....
In Caemlyn, Elayne fights to gain the Lion Throne while trying to avert what seems a certain civil war should she win the crown....
In the White Tower, Egwene struggles to undermine the sisters loyal to Elaida from within....
The winds of time have become a storm, and things that everyone believes are fixed in place forever are changing before their eyes. Even the White Tower itself is no longer a place of safety. Now Rand, Perrin and Mat, Egwene and Elayne, Nynaeve and Lan, and even Loial, must ride those storm winds, or the Dark One will triumph.

I'm currently working on a couple of Redwall books. Oddly enough, they're actually almost entirely an excellant series (in my opinion, anyways). I have also read through Cormyr: A novel, which was also an excellant read. I recomend any of these books to anybody interested in fantasy. (Seems that I'm reading fantasy as of late. I rolled through 5 books in my leisure time last weekend, while still spending the weekend fishing and visiting with my relatives in Nova Scotia. What a busy weekend)

I've read the entire series, sans the most current chapter Rakkety Tam?] I completely enjoy them, even though the whole plot device has become predictable. Have you never noticed that there's never a good character gone bad? Thought that was interesting.

Galthol
05-04-2005, 12:53 PM
Yeah I used to read those too. I got up to Redwall, then I got lost, didn't know what to read next or where to find it. I found the series started playing with time a bit. Though I do have a question. Are the animals small and just sized diffrently, or are they human sized and then their realitive sizes change. I always wanted to know that. Espically after reading Mossflower and the evil tyrant is a wildcat. (Much bigger than a mouse in real life you see.)

bjp4444
05-04-2005, 05:35 PM
No, I beleive they are sized as animals really are. So a mouse is the size of a mouse. And the series goes back and forth, telling various tales from the Redwall saga. We've gone all the way back to the beginning, I believe, and many generations past the first tale.

-bjp

Locke
05-04-2005, 07:38 PM
The size of the creatures is something I've noticed and wondered about a few times through the course of reading the books. I'm almost positive now that you're not supposed to try to decifer the size of the animals in regards to what the real animals would be to each other, because I believe there is a few places where the size of the animals seems to change from large to small or back again (for example, if you look at such things as what any of the vermin eat and they talk about cooking some woodland birds... They tend to be about the size of what a chicken would be to us, yet still they have birds in other parts of the series that would be at the proper size ratio. It seems to fluctuate a bit, IMO)

On a side note, I'm nearly through "The Stand" by Steven King. Personally, I think it's one of his best works, and I haven't read it since grade 9 or 10, which would be 4 or 5 years ago. Definently nice to pick that up again http://www.rpgamers.info/images/smilies/dance.gif. How could you go wrong with a battle of good versus evil, written by Steven King doing an excellant job with his writing.

bjp4444
05-04-2005, 10:11 PM
Although maybe they are roasting a bird on a spit, like some might do with an entire pig. I might be off, but perhaps they are eating smaller birds like a robin or so, where most other birds are say, an eagle [with the fantastic Scottish accents, which of course, I'm partial to] or a hawk, WHICH would be bigger than you normal woodland bird. Just an idea.

In a side note, I can't stand molespeak. Just utterly ridiculous.

Really mole speak rocks, same as Gnome speach, which I admit does take a while to deciper.

Locke
05-05-2005, 11:29 PM
I think it all depends on whether you vocalize what you read in accents or not (if that makes any sense, anyways). Molespeech is just a way of Brian Jacques has fleshed out and developed the world of Redwall Abbey (and surrounding countryside). I'm still trying to decifer how the sizes work for the different animals, but meh, I'll get it figured out eventually.

To keep on topic, I just picked up the book "Shogun" by James Clavell. Based in Feudal Japan, it's the story of an English pilot who managed to sail to Japan when none but the spanish and portugese had managed to before, and how he manages to adapt to the radically different culture. Definently one of my favourites, I think this might be my 5th or 6th time through it. :D
