I'm reading for the second time L'Empire des Anges (Empire of the Angels) by Bernard Werber. This novel follows another one named Les Thanatonautes (Deathtrippers), in which a team of visionnary scientists, philosophes and theologists, prove the existence of afterlife and start exploring this new unknown "continent". It's actually very original, it's not science-fiction or thrilling-fantasy, but a clever mix of fiction, theology, sociology, enigmas and brilliant thoughts about life in general. Werber is a bit of an unclassified author, since he's not a pure literary "artist" but rather an extremely intelligent person who passes his various ideas and philosophies on to the reader.

The best way to describe his style would be "buy one of his books and read it" - and maybe the fact that those who like his stories (as I do) acquire instant respect for this man, whose ideas in any matters generally make such perfect sense that you end up adopting them too. :)

The fame started with his very first novel Empire of the Ants (which I already mentioned here ;) ) which became a trilogy ; then he wrote Deathtrippers / Les Thanatonauthes, which in turn became a trilogy when he wrote Empire of the Angels and the recent We, Gods / Nous, les Dieux. (That's the reason why I'm reading a second time Empire of the Angels, I just want to remember the story so I can go on in We, Gods without being lost. ^^)

I've currently rolled through "Trevayne" by Robert Ludlum, and then had one of my roommates shove the Gnostic Gospels of Jesus on me and tell me I had to read it. Sooooo, I'm currently rolling through that.

Going back to Trevayne, it's a book about a massive company that is running the US from the background. An amazing novel, if your into political thriller style books.

I've just started reading La Nuit des Temps (The Ice People), by french writer René Barjavel.

It's been written in 1968 but it's clever science-fiction (apparently mixed with humanist thoughts and a love story of some sort), so it hasn't aged at all and seems very believable even now. The story takes place in Antarctic, where an international expedition discovers, under 1 Km of ice, what seems to be ruins of a very evolved human civilization... except it's 900'000 years old. What's going on ? Who were they ? Did they die ? Why ? So many questions I can't answer yet, as I've only started reading this book two days ago. :p

Anyone read Michael Crichton's Sphere, or seen the movie ? Well, although the story is different in many ways, the starting idea seems extremely inspired after Barjavel's novel actually.

Phew ! Well, I'm done. I've read it.
It's... unforgettable. (°_°);

I had read about 1/3 of the book in two evenings, putting it down only when I couldn't keep my eyes open... Then on the next day, I started reading again in the afternoon - and didn't stop reading until I had finished the book, 275 pages and a few hours later. I was hooked ! This story is so good, so surprising, so intelligent as well... I'll keep the book in my personal collection forever if I can ; although I'm not sure I'll read it again one day, because it moved me so much I almost cried (and no I ain't a person who cries easily :) ).

The key here is to avoid spoiling the ending at all costs ! Really, I advise you strongly not to read any summary, any presentation ; even the small paragraph on the back of the cover says a bit too much. Think of it as the Sixth Sense movie : in the end, you understand something you didn't know until then, which is so crucial that it puts the whole story in a new perspective - and you will want to read it again (at least some parts) so that you get it all. So the less you know of the story before you start reading the book, the best it is and the more you'll appreciate it.

Having read all customer reviews on Amazon.com, I think they're all safe and nobody spoils the story. What's more, the book got 5/5 stars in all reviews (30 of them)... The funny part being that everyone seems to agree on one thing : the english title for that book sucks ! A proper translation would've been "The Night of Time" or "The Night Beyond Time"... "The Ice People" is sooo cheap and reducing.

Anyway, here's something I read in these reviews, which I think describes it well : "Having read several of Barjavel's stories and some of his letters, one of the most enduring qualities of his work is not that he focuses on the "sci-fi" aspect of his fantastic stories. His stories always focus on the human aspect and are classified as science-fiction because the events he recounts happen in fantastic times under extraordinary circumstances. Yet, his focus on relationships, emotions, hopes and fears are what makes his stories unforgettable."

Now the biggest problem is that the book isn't recent, and apparently it's difficult to find the english version as it's available only in used-books stores (hehe, it's logical : only a few fools wouldn't keep the book once they've bought it ^^)... But I really think it's worth the searching. Or if you can read french, you can purchase the original book which is still in print nowadays. :search:

Last but not least : it is rumored that Luc Besson, the French film-director known for La Femme Nikita, The Big Blue, Leon (The Professional) and The Fifth Element, is planning on making a movie from this book... If this is true, I'm rather confident (as I liked most of his films, especially Leon which I worship :p ) but I wonder how he would deal with the frequent nudity of the main female character (not gratuitous nudity, as it serves the story 100%) and the few love scenes (very subtle and sensible and romantic in the novel, but hardly exposable on the big screen without being rated 18+) (which I don't mind, but producers often mind and temper with the film they want to sell)...

Ah, anyway. Read it. :D

Yeah, I heard that and it's so silly... I'm not a lawyer but I'm almost sure the publisher wouldn't win the case in court. I mean come on ! It's just a freakin' book ! So what if a couple of shops released it too soon (and only to a rare few lucky customers) ? It's the publisher / store's fault, not the customer's fault. Besides, there are laws about copyright but no law can forbid people to tell bits of a story to others... A book is a book, this is not industrial spying ! (°_°) The only risk in this affair is that ooohhhmygawd, the World might know a few days sooner what the market intended us to know a few days later. Scary. (-_-);

All they're defending right now is their right to win more money, but I'm confident such a "spoiler" wouldn't make the sells of the book go horribly wrong... Whatever...

Locke
07-18-2005, 09:37 AM
I'm pretty sure that any shops that released the book before it's scheduled date of release would end up getting sued successfuly by the publisher as I believe that with the scheduled release dates each store has an agreement to not sell copies of the books before the scheduled release date. If the store is in violation of that agreement, they could be sued. If it's not an agreement, the publication company could also probly just refuse to sell any more books to that specific store.

Still going through Caverns of Socrates. Took a break for a couple days due to too many people being in my house to be able to properly enjoy it.

To quote one of the lucky few who managed to get ahold of the book ahead of time, and was asked to return it until the proper release date,

Currently reading Finding You by French writer Marc Levy, the sequel to If Only It Were True - a wonderful first novel, which Dreamworks made a movie after (Just Like Heaven, coming this fall I think).

NB : Out of curiosity, I've just seen the trailer for the movie... ouchhhhh. (+_+) I was eager to see the result but now, I'm afraid ! Looks like they did a mere romantic comedy with it ! Whereas the original idea (a man meets the "ghost" of a woman who isn't dead, but in deep coma ; they get to know each other better while trying to save the woman's life), this idea wasn't just for the sake of paranormal jokes. It was mostly a purpose for a beautiful love story (not only between them)... Now I don't think they kept the serious side of it, only the jokes. :wonder:

... Anyway. Finding You, the sequel, aims to finally get them together ('cause something's changed between the end of the first book and the beginning of the second) ; so far it seems good, and I've been told it's a happy-end this time. We'll see ! :)

I read

"The music of chance"
by Paul Auster

the other day.
It is a haunting tale about man being powerless against chance,
despite all of his effort.
Paul Auster has a great style of writing.
I was so intrigued by the book that I started another of his novels, "Mr. Vertigo", right away.
So far it is a lot of fun, a great parable about America at the beginning of the 20th century - full of innocent ambition, but already down the road towards malice and greed.

I highly recommend these two books - and probably anything else Paul Auster has written.

He created the Forgotten Realms setting for DND, so I'm sure you've heard of him. I have all the elminster books, so if you feel like reading one let me know and I'll get it to you (when you have time to read, I don't want to lose it for 2 or 3 months ;))

I've started reading Cell by Stephen King. Just bought it a couple of days ago... It's been several years since I've read any book by Stephen King at all ! :) But this one caught my attention, as it's roughly about The End of The World Because of Mobile Phones Making People Insane and Murderous. ^^ So far it's ok ; it's more gory than scary (as usual with King's modern-era books :p ) but still interesting.

Locke > Insomnia is really good ! I remember liking this book a lot, although my interest in Stephen King was already going down at the time. This novel surprised me, it had very interesting concepts and remained very coherent as a story. I must say, I was disappointed when the movie Insomnia (which I haven't seen) came out a few years ago - with its title, I was so sure it was made from the book ! XD But it has nothing to do with it, just the title is the same. Too bad, I would've liked a movie of this book. :)

Kai > I didn't know of Prey, but it seems interesting. I may want to read it... Locke, since you seem to be the owner of the book : have you read it, is it any good ? ^^

I am currently reading paradise lost by John Milton which is looking very promising.

I have just finished reading fools die by Mario Puzo (the same guy who wrote the god father) which was an excellent read and one I recommend to anyone mature readers looking for a good piece of escape fiction.

Also I have recently finished rereading my favorite series His Dark Materials; The golden compass (now called northern lights), The subtle knife, and The amber spyglass. These books have a very deep story line with strong implicit messages about religious conflict. All are great books in my opinion and worth checking out.

Yeah, it's heavy going. I find myself re-reading bits over and over till I'm sure it makes sense in my head. ŽŽ Gonna take me forever though, as large chunks of time are something I have rather little of.

Just finished my other book I was reading though, The Alchemyst's Cat by Robin Jarvis. It was bought for me many many years ago when I was racing through Brian Jacques' various Redwall books and an aunt got confused and picked that up instead. Even though it's a prequel of sorts to a following trilogy it still stands so well as a book in it's own right. Now it will reside on the shelf for a few more years until the feeling takes me once more. I'm also still, kinda, reading Kajira of Gor again but time constraints have really put that on hold in favour of Inferno.
