Ive recently got a playstation emulator called ePSXe, it required some files which i managed to obtain, everything works fine now except that for some reason when i run final fantasy VIII the information on the battle screen is not visible, vital information, such as hp and lists of magic and items.
Has anyone else emulated final fantasy VIII? if so id like to know what emulator you used, im running win xp and cant run bleem or VGS.
I think it might have somthing to do with the plugins im using, if you have used ePSXe emulator id like to know what plugins you used.
thanks,
beez
ePSXe FAQ: Q: How can get Final Fantasy 8 PAL working?
A: You need to use a patched backup version, the original one is not working.
If it isnt the PAL, I dont know. There shouldnt be a problem with the US-NTSC version. But who knows, emulation is still strange. Might be that you need to patch it.. in the worst case. Then, its difficult to find a patch.
Well.. first you should try to switch between the Video Plug-ins.
ePSXe FAQ:
Now here's a list for the best plugins for the most popular graphic cards:
3dfx Voodoo 2 --> Lewpy's Glide plugin (could crash with certain drivers)
3dfx Voodoo 3 --> Pete's D3D (DirectX 7) or Lewpy's Glide plugin
3dfx Voodoo 4/5 --> Pete's D3D (DirectX 7) or Lewpy's Glide plugin
ATI Radeon --> Pete's OpenGL plugin
ATI Rage 128/Expert --> Pete's D3D (DirectX 7) plugin
nVidia GeForce 1/2 --> Pete's OpenGL plugin
nVidia TNT/TNT2 --> Pete's OpenGL plugin
Matrox G200/G400 --> Pete's D3D (DirectX 6) plugin
... the rest --> Pete's D3D (DirectX 7) plugin
It may help you.
Many games got problems with menu's, text fields and in this case battle scenes, too. If you cant solve the problem on your own.. you should ask on the official ePSXe forums, since they got the most experience with emulation and this problem is probably already known there :)

In theory you shouldnt need a patch just a copy of the bios for Europe, US and Japan. There are some frontends availadle which have the correct settings for various games to work, you should look into them first. They cover some FF, Xenogears and a few others.

Playstation emulation sucks really. Too bad no one is really working on the emulators at all. I have millions of people having trouble with all FF games, concerning the swirl effect (you know, the thing that happens when you encounter a monster and the screen goes all colourful and stuff) and other things, mostly about battles. Can't really help you one way or the other though.

Have you had a look through www.ngemu.com/psx ? I believe the frontend that I mentioned earlier is http://delta.ngemu.com/. If not it must be this one http://www.pbernert.com/html/frontend.htm#CUTOR.
There are couple different frontends out there. I have used Delta the most. It's quite handy.

If you have the knowledge and you know the proper stuff about plugins you can run any game with ePSXe.
I have played FF8 with ePSXe aswell. To make it run smooth use Peops soft driver 1.4, it's the best GPU plugin in my opinion. But to make it look better etc I first need to know several things.
Wich plugins are you currently using?
Wich bios do you use?
What are your Computer specs?
EDIT => Maybe this forum needs a emulation section. Since I'm concerned by the fact that if more members come, more and more will ask for emulation help. Just a suggestion though.

Delta is a very good frontend for ePSXe and if you install it then it may help you configure your games for your hardware easily.
You can get delta from delta.ngemu.com.
You can get VGS for XP patch from www.aldostools.com.
You can get alot of help for ePSXe on www.ngemu.com and forums.emulator-zone.com.
Playstation emulation is perhaps one of the near to perfect emulation scenes. You need to have some information and knowledge about your hardware.

Incorrect. (http://www.ngemu.com/forums/showthread.php?t=49711) Also, even if all the games would run, requiring every game to have individual settings is not good emulation at all. Infact, it's rather bad emulation. It's rather inconvenient for majority of the users.
Even SNES emulation is not perfect. Graphic and compatibility is pretty high on both ZSNES and SNES9X but sound emulation needs still work. Especially in SNES9X. Ever played Tales of Phantasia or Star Ocean on SNES9X? The beginning song of ToP and the speech parts (captains log, stardate omg hilarious :D ) of Star Ocean crac and pop in SNES9X. ZSNES handles them better, but I think there is something else wrong in the ZSNES sound emulation. Can't recall what though.
Slightly offtopic there.
Back to the original sin, PSX emulation...
Is far from perfect. As I said, it's too bad that there is no new versions of epsxe in sight. The current code would need some serious cleanup too. There are plenty of plugins out there, but their usage is inconvenient at best and frustrating at the worst. Frontends make this easier because of the possibility to save the individual settings for each game.
Most people are satisfied with emulation just because they don't know any better. It's the same with most of the current emulators out there. The generation has changed and the current users have never played original SNES or NES so they don't really know what to expect at all, thus being satisfied with all they can get.
Now this doesn't of course apply to PSX emulation, it being remotely new console, so people have actually played it. However, when it comes down either to have less than perfect emulation or buy the original console from somewhere, the cheaper option wins in most cases. And thus everyone is satisfied enough in the current crappy quality of PSx emulation.
Gone are the good old days when emulation was about playing the old games that were impossible to get hands on. Now, whenever a new console is released, in a week someone has done a emulator for PC, and after two weeks someone has ported it to his toaster.
*sigh*

obviously, Kilu, you need to brush up on your emu programming skills.
and after two weeks someone has ported it to his toaster.ooh! you should see my toaster case mod for my xbox!

yes the psx emulator does need a total overhaul, but its better than nowt (that is yorkshire, england for 'nothing'). Some of the FF's have battle problems but mostly given a nice plugin and good comp spec you can atleast play it with mostly the same as if it were a real PS and in some areas mainly graphical, even better.
Lot needs to be done on it but its ok. Anyway that FF7 swirl i never foind a fix but so what who needs it:)

It's always better having the original console.
But to gain the right knowledge wich you need to play a game properly isn't hard.

That's true. Too bad very few people actually try. Most of them just decide to post their questions on zophar/ngemu/whatever boards in hopes of a quick answer, while they could have searched the already existing, kazillions of topics about the same subject and/or experiment themselves. People are so lazy these days.
I can only imagine how some of the more frequent visitors might get slightly furstrated on people when they ask the same questions over and over again.
On a related news, I have never tried to emulate any FF game on PSX (nor am I planning to), so I have no idea how to get rid of any problems the emulation might have :dance:
