why keep debating if you and Dan think Uematsu its a great Composer and Kilu no what will happen??? Nothing you wont change Kilu opinion about Uematsu, so If you like it enjoy his music if Kilu dont like then he can enjoy The others Composers, the thing here is that you wont change Kilus mind if thats what are you intend to do, I love the composers that Kilu mention as I Love Uematsu's work but we have to enjoy the music we like and stop this MORE-LIKE-FIGHT Debate : dont you think better keep those strength for the world Domination hehehehehehe  well thats my two cents

firstly, yes i think Kilu and Yojimbo are getting a little too much into this... (daniel seems unusually tolerable to me for some reason, however. >.>)
anyway... despite me explicitly saying so, i didn't mean to imply that i think any other composer is truly better than Uematsu. instead, i was hoping people would come to realize that each person has his own opinion, and no matter how much you may like Uematsu, there will always be others who prefer someone else. furthermore, as bAz said, debate will be highly unlikely to change either party's views; it's kind of like arguing about whether or not red is a better color than blue.
and also, bunbun is a pseudonym (and an excellent one at that)... not the guy's actual name.
...although names have ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with one's ability as a composer.
oh, one last thing... what's your logic on opinions being wrong, daniel? i mean, i can picture most people disagreeing with a particular opinion... and i can see the entire world disagreeing with one man's opinion... but i don't really see where they could, in fact, be *wrong*. (i mean, of course, something other than, say, a doctor's opinion. language can be tricky that way.)
Yojimbo
02-15-2005, 04:59 PM
ok i will cool off, for today at least. but opinions can be wrong
for example i could say 'crime is the only answer to having a peaceful society' but obviously this opinion is WRONG. correct, once Kilu has his opinion it cannot be changed, but i wish it would from time to time when his opinion is wrong.
daniel
02-15-2005, 05:00 PM
I will say this and let u ponder;)
I said it before but got blasted but if u take this meaning the way it is presented u will find opinions can be wrong.
I am a murderer. I murder cause I am a twisted git in this case. It is my opinion that it is right for me never to be caught!
Is that opinion wrong?
Is kasparov the greatest human chess player to have lived? is that an opinion. I think not, he certainly is. Sometimes no matter what the opinion it can be wrong given enough thought, there are lots that can be disputed, hell they try in vain to say kasparov is not the best chess player to have lived. their opinions are wrong. Mine is not always right but in some circumstanes i truly believe i am vindicated. in others they are pure opinions that i cannot argue with
Also, I myself knew it was not a guys name but I am very interested now to find out why bunbun:):):)
Anyway thast all for today i have nothing further to add really:)
EDIT: i made yojimbo take that quote off casue it was me who presented him with it;) he use the same logic as my argument though the copy;) haha

Listening to Kids run through the city corner, FF6 soundtrack has really grown on me in recent months.
Kilu if you was to ask all these oriental composers who they believe is there rolemodel im sure they would pick Uematsu due to his incredable success
Firstly, some of the guys that I think are better than Uematsu have started composing on the same era (or earlier even) as him (NES era, that is) so I sincerely doubt Uematsu being any kind of rolemodel to them. It's true that Masashi Hamauzu has said (if I remember correctly) in some interview that listening to Uematsus music got him into composing. It might have been some other guys as well. However, this is irrelevant, yet again.
Even if his influence is widely recognized, it does not mean that he is superior composer comparing to everyone else. In my opinion.
why keep debating if you and Dan think Uematsu its a great Composer and Kilu no what will happen???
That's what I would like to know. Truth is that too often when anyone brings up anything negative about Uematsus music (yes, I'm not the only one, believe me) it results in a mild war of some sort. Hanging out in several vgm related forums has taught me that. It's sad really.
firstly, yes i think Kilu and Yojimbo are getting a little too much into this...
Me? Getting too much into this? No way :shades:

this was supposed to be continued elsewhere.
I will quickly say that kilu you are no innocent. Its the way you present your own opinion that sparks a "war". I think this discussion is good, strong opinions being argued is a good, but sadly usually unfriendly encounter.
and no its not that there is "anything negative" that makes me want to debate its just that to you it seems everything is negative. i heard nowt positive really, just this album is disappointing better than the first (which is again rubbish) but still boring. this is better and that is. can i ask you kilu, what in your opinion has uematsu done that IS good. i noticed that in your top 10 vgm albums there was no uematsu. I found that incredible, though yes its your opinion. And i don't want to change your opinion at all. Like i said before I can accept negative comments. I hate some of usmatsu work myself, but.....alot of people go too far, I have no idea why.
this was supposed to be continued elsewhere.
I was under the impression that only the "opinions can be wrong" argument was supposed to go on somewhere else :p
I will quickly say that kilu you are no innocent. Its the way you present your own opinion that sparks a "war".
I'm quite aware of this. I'm rather blunt even when I'm trying not to be. Some people take it almost personally even if it's not meant to be.
and no its not that there is "anything negative" that makes me want to debate its just that to you it seems everything is negative. i heard nowt positive really, just this album is disappointing better than the first (which is again rubbish) but still boring. this is better and that is. can i ask you kilu, what in your opinion has uematsu done that IS good. i noticed that in your top 10 vgm albums there was no uematsu. Well, I'm assuming that the "first and second" album you are referring to are the Black Mages albums. They both suffer mostly from the bad choice of tracks, not suited for this rockish approach at all. They also lack some really good new ideas. They are just the same old themes played with guitar on the lead. I need more variation from arrangements. And from rock/metal in general as well. This kind of cheesy 80' leatherpants metal rock stuff is not my style at all. And I can't say the vocalists on Black Mages 2 are all that great. I mean, really. The playing is okay, Sekito and Okamiya can axe, Uematsu and Fukui know their keyboards, Hanyuda and Kawamori play their instruments okay as well. However, I'm really disappointed in the variation that drum and basslines has, which is next to none. Hanyuda keeps the steady beat, but doesn't seem to have much freedom on fills, and sounds like he is bored when he plays. And the basslines are oh so boring, Kawamori could probably play them with one hand. As I'm mostly a bass and percussion man, this is probably the biggest reason why I don't care much for either of the Black Mages albums.
As for good stuff... I think best complete (complete as in, not one song from one soundtrack or whatever, but every track of any given game) work of Uematsu is Dynami Tracer. It's a japanese SNES game, no OST. I have never played the game myself, but the main part what struck me as brilliant in this piece of work is that it sounds fresh. And different. When it all comes down to it, I'm probably more tired of "generic Final Fantasy sound" rather than Uematsu. However, as Uematsu is mostly known of his FF music, it's obvious how this translates to tiredness of Uematsus music. Dynami Tracer, while older game, is not bound with FF limits, so to speak, and it sounds like Uematsu had free hands on the music, rather than tied to "composing more FF music". If you know what I mean. Like, people expect to hear Final Fantasy music in Final Fantasy game, and Uematsu delivers. In this perspective it was a good move from Uematsu to go freelance. This way can have more say on the music he composes, which would make his music more interesting. His hands are now free, which hopefully will result in some good shit.
And other good stuff?
judgment day, jenova, electro de chocobo, mods the chocobo, liberi fatali, mako reactor music(come on, I can't remember every damn song name ;) ), znarakand, path of redemption. There are lots more obviously. But in such huge amount of songs that he has composed, the great stuff is easily drowned in the ocean of more or less mediocre stuff. And that's a reason why I had no Uematsu albums in my top 10 list. In every album there are these hot shits that hit you in the nuts, then you have the good stuff, and then yo uhave the OK stuff that goes well with the game but doesn't stand out all that much, and have very little value outside the game, other than nostalgy reminders of the game, and then there are the ugh so bad songs that simply drag the album down on my list. Basicly, most oh his albums/works are not complete, so to speak.
:ponder:

I think the last 2 paragraphs, which is the clearest statement I've read so far of your opinion of Uematsu, did it. An opinion I completely agree with, BTW, although I do include many more tracks among my favorites than you, Kilu. Some of Uematsu's works are boring and repetitive, not worth listening to. But I do enjoy listening to many of his works as well. That's why I prefer my own burned CD soundtracks over ones I buy. That way I get all my favorite songs together!

But keep in mind that collecting VGM is not storing albums : it's a matter of gathering music that you personally like. For each album you have, you should be able to answer this simple question : "Why do I keep that ?"
It's when you lose sight of the purpose of your collection that you lose all the pleasure of listening to it...

"Dancing Mad Once Again" - Dancing Mad from FF6, remixed by Ailsean.
Daniel, have you checked the opening fmv from the psx game lately. It might have something like "additional music" or whatever in the credits in it. And of course it sounds like Nobuo, because it's his original work that is mildly arranged. Tsuyoshi Sekito is not all that great when it comes to arrangements atleast. Don't know about his composing skills, haven't heard that much.
"Dancing Mad Once Again" - Dancing Mad from FF6, remixed by Ailsean.
And virt. (http://vgmix.com/song_view.php?song_id=1248) Actually, I think virt did the arrangement and Ailsean provided the guitars. I could be wrong though.

I remember the days, I still could breathe
Now I'm sinking beneath, the waves are crashing over me
The empty space I lay between
Is all that's left of where our love was meant to be

OOO,Im about to play God of War. Can you hold on to the soundtrack till I finish playing it in case I like it?
Who is the composer of the soundtrack? I'm interested in the soundtrack, eventhough I haven't played the game yet.

Eye of the tiger from Rocky soundtrack. Reminds me of the part of Rocky IV where Rocky and his opponent Ivan Drago are preparing for the match. Ivan trains in lab with computers and Rocky trains somewhere in the snowy mountains.

I love that album, I wish someone wouldn't have stolen my book of CD's about 3 years ago. 200 discs, gone in an instant.
But I was also listening to wonderwall also, albeit it yesterday. Today I got some Elvis in though, burning love and suspicious minds. Two wonderful tracks.

"Lufia's Dream", by Faze. Wonderful remix... good to see that in VGMix now.
The main stuff is now happening on VGMix. I feel like OC is standing as a kind of museum, lacking the dynamism of the other community. Meanwhile, it still remains the well-known, frontend site for VG remixing.

"Chapter XI Truth of War ~Original Score Medley for Movie Scenes~", by Taro Iwashiro, from Onimusha 2 Orchestra Album.
Simply awesome. It may still be a sampled orchestra, but the whole album is majestuously arranged. This one might even reach my top 10...
StargÅte movie score by David Arnold.

NOW PLAYING: VNV Nation - Epicentre (FuturePerfect)
Muahahaha.. Dark Futurepop goodness
I asked myself was I content
with the world that I once cherished
did it bring me to this darkened place
to contemplate my perfect future?
I will not stand nor utter words against this tide of hate
losing sight of what and who I was again
I'm so sorry if these seething words I say
impress on you that I've become anathema of my soul...

"Memories", from The Silent Force, by Within Temptation
To me, their last album sounds way better than what they have done before.
I think it's mainly because of the symphonic BGM, and also because the male vocalists don't sing as much as before :D
