View Full Version : The Off-Topic Thread

yeah, don't even try talking about the supposed off-topic paradox... cuz it doesn't even apply.
the topic of the thread is being off topic... so as long as you don't talk about being off topic, you're off topic, and therefore are following the rules of the thread.
...i think. ^.^

Do give others a chance to start some of the ol' threads, silver :p Plus, we don't need to bring all of them over, just the useful ones.
A perfect emoticon for this thread can be found in the signs category...

bah, c'mon people, there are plenty of other threads to create.
i've really been up for some philosophical debate lately (hint hint), but i can't think of anything to debate.
Kyari
08-01-2004, 08:05 PM
My suggestion is that everyone who had a dedicated thread for themselves to recreate it themselves. That's what I'll be doing.
Abruptly switching the topic . . . a debate? How about the ethical questions surrounding cheese soup? Man, that soup. I heard it tried to take over America in a Volkswagon Van hidden in 1964 . . .

what, you guys think this thread is useless? it's my favorite thread! not that i even know what we were talking about last in the old forums... >.>
but anyway... i brought up the philosophical debate thing because i want someone to make a philosophical debate thread since, although i do want to philosophically debate, i don't have anything in particular i feel like debating about.
Kyari
08-01-2004, 09:35 PM
Well, I for one liked the old personal threads. Something about them . . . I dunno.
And, YES, Flashfirer, this is an important thread. It keeps the forums clean - we don't have to make a new thread every time we want to screw around. Plus, it's fun! Wheeeeeeeeeeee!
Hmm, my space bar and shift key are funky . . .

Uhm, stole? Emoticons and game sprites are free and open to the public. You can get them from piles of resource sites. I sifted through 1000's of them and picked the best ones for our forums.
silverDistortioN

:search: Well... I'd be lying if I denied how irritated I was when I showed up on launch date and found two threads I'd originally started already made for me. I could have understood better, I guess, if I weren't a regular poster, or the topics had been off the radar for a while, or I didn't show up for, like, a week after launch of the new boards. And I'd be lying if I denied becoming angry when Silver was not only nonchalant about it, but said the whole "Screw you" bit - especially if you consider my last post in the original Off-Topic Thread: http://www.rpgamers.net/cgi-bin/board/discussion.cgi?forum=10&discussion=306 . :shame:

Stolen?
Yeah... stolen. Even that is open to public, it continues stolen. Let's discuss the theory of the verbs. Under certain circunstations, a verb don't have the main verbal function activated unless stated otherwise.
Anyways, why don't you just go to deviantart pick up the thousands of emoticons there? So many!
Kyari
08-02-2004, 10:17 AM
Quick question . . . how would one go about stating it otherwise?
Locke Cole
08-02-2004, 10:29 AM
Emoticons are not "stolen" if they are posted on a site by the creator themselves, telling people to take/use them. As for game sprites, bleh. If you'd all prefer, I'll draw some stick figures and just use those for our icon db. Sites such as rpg-icons.com, rpgpics.com, mysmilies.com - Emoticon and sprite databases, just waiting to be used for things like this. I didn't go around to other forums taking their emoticons, even though you seem to think I have no life and did. I went to a large emoticon site and sifted though it. Bleh

Bah, it's not my fault that there is so many other threads in here already. It's getting hard to keep track of all these happenings. Topic with a topic 'off-topic' (lollorzzzzzzz  ) is bound to get less attention, atleast in the beginning. Everyone seems to like to post under a more specific topic. Maybe.

If you want someone to brag about their sexual conquests, speak to my sister. -_-

I'm still waiting for my dad to fall out of the boat. It doesn't seem to happen.
I was asking him about windsurfing today, and how I'd like to try it because he's always saying you should try things when you're young or you'll regret not trying them.............then he said I couldn't try it because he couldn't be arsed to drive me there and because I'm the only crew he has for his boat. O_o
So I'm considering not going sailing with him until he agrees. I don't like sailing with him, he's too controlling and shouts so much you can't enjoy it. :(
He expects you to know how to do things without being shown how they work first then yells if you get it wrong. -_-

:( It really stinks when justice is circumvented because of technicalities, or in this case, it really stinks that the blanket protection to prove everyone guilty allowed what might have been a guilty man to slip through the cracks. About "training", I don't think it adds anything to your "performance" except self-confidence... But if you're confident enough and just act naturally, and if you don't lack imagination (so that you can try and guess how the other feels), you don't need training to do it right. :p

And Giea, buss is another way of writing bus. Do you really have nothing better to write than lame attempts to make fun of people because they type different than you? Also, not too long ago you were making of fun of Lord Draud for his typos. I'm willing to bet my nuts that you have made fun of TDK as well, eventhough I can't remember.
If you try to be funny, try doing it in more intelligent way. Try doing it so well that someone else might find it funny as well, not just you in your own mind.
Don't be stupid on every reply you make. Unless you can't help it.

I didn't squish it, I measured it! :D
I've decided I'm rather fond of it because it keeps returning so I've named it Herbert. :)
Anyway the measurements show it's about 7cm from front leg to back leg when standing and if it's legs were spread out it'd be about 10cm.
Still haven't touched it though. :emlaugh:
To be honest I wouldn't mind a big spider like in that picture, they have more weight and can't run as fast. :p
Although I wouldn't fancy holding anything with fangs. :p
It's been scuttling around my room for about a week now so it's found a home. :)
As long as it doesn't breed I don't care. ¬¬
EDIT!!!!
I couldn't squish it because it looked at me with those little puppy eyes. :p
AGH!!! As I typed that my dog just tried to eat it!!! No kidding!!! :amazed:

Brain: What's that?
Peter: Well, he's got those fangs. Have they ever shown him doing somebody in and then feedin' on them?
Brian: You're, you're asking if they've ever done an episode of Seseme Street where the Count kills somebody and then sucks their blood for sustenance.
Peter: Yeah
Brian: No they've never done that.

Thats good yuffie that you dont kill Herbert but like I said in the "what are you craving"thread it may be dying. Spiders never leave there web only when they have no choice and hunger and thirst drive it to search for a new spot one last time. Unless its a jumping spider.
This may sound crazy but go right in front of it and take some water in your finger and put it as close as you can by its mouth. You could use a toothpick.
But make sure it sees you.Or even better a small peice of cantaloupe or apple. No citrus fruits. So it can absorb the simple sugars.
Eventually it will leave your apartment. It will go right under the crack of the door. But it may choose to die in your apartment. Let it complete its life cycle. Your place was also its home.
From what you describe from its size its sound old.

Thats a common hunter spider. They have no permanent webs. I was going to ask you to get a picture because I dont want you to be near a potential poisonus spider. Ive never seen one that color before, what part of the world are you from?
Hunter spiders are wild, outdoor mainly,so scoop it up in a paper cup and leave it in the garden. It probably wandered in your place in search of a mate or prey or just got lost. Over here they are sand colored and eat the wood louse that are every where outside. As soon as I see one in the house I realease it outside to there enviroment.
No more biology lessons.
You could also scoop it up in your hand gently and take it outside. They dont bite. Your not squemish are you? They do move preety fast and might travel up your arm so mabey its best you use a paper cop and cover it with a peice of paper. :D
I forgot,it is a male, the females are much smaller and fatter so you were right in calling it Herbert.

The U.K. That explains the coloration. I wasnt sure but from the old boards I thought you were from either Britain or Israel.
I was thinkig that if its starting to get cold in the U.K. Herbert might be trying to find a place to hibernate. Thats when hunter spiders sometimes go inside peoples homes. They find a nice corner in the ceilings and spin a small coccon and sleep until spring. In the garden hunter spiders go between the bark of trees or the cracks of rocks to hibernate.
Is it cool in the U.K. like under 70 degrees farenheit?
Spiders are omnivorus, ignore the standard teachings. What fasinates me more about spiders is there memory. I bet Herbert has memorized the entire layout of Yuffies apartment by touch and sight, and remembers where the food was and who gave it to him.
To bad you dont have a small black light or ultaviolet light source. If you were to turn off the lights and look real close at the walls with a small hand flashlight you might see how far Herbert has traveled by his anchor webs. They will glisten like silver. Old webs will look black. Anchor webs are thinner than the other webs they produce. There almost invisable. But if you look in the right angle in the light.
More spider biology. :)
Im getting into to much detail.
I fogot to ask is it true about a species of moth in the U.K. the size of a hand? Also have you heard anything about that Ant supercolony in europe.
Theres so little info on the web. I cant belive that there are so many ant colonies with diffrent queens cooperating and not killing each other. I heard it spans from italy to france and spain. I wish I could see them. I could learn so much.
The U.K. That explains the coloration. I wasnt sure but from the old boards I thought you were from either Britain or Israel.

(Kilu, I don't think Jetblue ever indicated he made a difference between UK and Britain... ? :search: )
Jetblue, you probably don't realize it but you've done more for my arachnophobia in a couple posts than I've ever done in several years ! The way you describe the spider makes it look almost... Sympathetic (and maybe the fact that Yuffie named it Herbert :D ). I mean, I'm almost at a point where I'll try feeding a spider next time I see one ! That's insane !!! :wacky:
About the moth (is that what I think it is : "nocturnal butterfly" ?) the size of a hand, it does live in Europe - although very rare. I must've seen such a specimen "in the wild" (= not in captivity ^^) 2 or 3 times at most in my life. Oh by the way - I HATE mothes too... Except those beautiful ones (I'm still not fond of them but I respect them :p ).
As for the ants - have you ever read Empire of the Ants by Bernard Werber ? :amazed: If not, I highly suggest that you get that book as soon as you can. People who don't care about ants (= most people :D ) can easily be fascinated by this book, which isn't just "A Bug's Life" on paper but a vast, meaningful, instructive story about humans, ants, philosophy, and many other things. Werber has written two other books in the "ants trilogy" plus several great novels on other themes, with the same intelligence... So I advise anyone to read it, and especially to you if you seem so interested in insects generally, and ants particularly. :)

Zedie: Yes I did watch it eat, it was weird!! It had like 2 fangs that worked sort of like a wiggly fork and it scraped at the apple with them and sucked up the juice. I looked at the bit of apple in the morning and there was sort of 2 lines of scrapes. :D
Jet: How do you know so much about spiders? O.o
However you know it's pretty neat! I used to really hate them. :D
Still not got quite to picking up Herbert yet. ;)
Put my hand right by it to feed it more apple though.
As for the temperature, it's still pretty warm but this is the coldest room in the house, it's just a converted garage.
And it's called a house by the way. ;)

Wow I would love to hold one of those moths. I read stories from time to time but I always thought they were legend. I read that they weave black silk and the catapillar is extreamly poisonus. I even heard they drink the blood from cows and deer. And there eyes are as red as rubies. There is so little information on the giant moth.
The ancient gods speak of them as damned souls that leave tartarus on the full moon to feed on the living. I think there were lots of them in europe in the old days but died out because of mans interfearence and superstition. Theres so many stories about them that I will typing for hours.
Ill keep my eye out for that book, sounds interesting.
I ve always tried to understand how creatures behave and communicate.Insects and spiders are very intelligent and if you observe them you learn what they are saying. If they are hurt,or thirsty or looking for a mate, etc. They can sence with there powerful feelers or sensors if we mean them harm or not.
I really know more about web spiders than I do about mobile spiders like Herbert.
Heres some more info on the hunter spider that Ive learned over the years. In homes there greatest predator is the common house centapede. The bushy kind. Also very intelligent. They have powerful segmented jaws. They remove a spiders legs one by one. Its very gruesome.
Outside the hunter spider is preyed apon by birds or other insects but mainly the spider wasp. There are varoius species of spider wasp. Some are really small. The hunter spider is easy prey because the dont have a defensive web.
The spider wasp lays her eggs in the still living spider. Spider wasps also hunt jumping and trapdoor spiders but outside I see the wasps dragging hunter spiders along the ground all the time. Mabey Herbert went inside your home to escape a wasp.
Also chances are Herbert is not alone. One time when I was younger a hunter spider was in my room and my brother was going to step on it and I tried to stop him. I told him to let me catch it and throw it outside. My brother said retardedly that it will just find a way to come back inside. He steped on it. I went over to pick it up because no one wants a dead spider in there room, when I saw this tiny mite like creature move away from the body then a tiny beatle like insect move then fly away. So mabey Herbert has a couple of passengers. Its common for moving insects to carry one or more tiny insects.I dont think there parasites. They probably protect the host in one way or another or are along just for the ride.
No more biology lessons. Just be kind to all creatures great and small. :D
I forgot to mention theres 2 spiders around here I cant identify. One is in my bath room. Its about 1 inch long, black but has half of its abdomen is bright red, could be a variation. The other is in downtown. I use to work in this office high rise and at night these 3 inch spiders would come out and lay there webs on the window panes outside. They are gray in color with white lines on the top of there abdomens. They cover all the high rises at night about 3 per window. There webs must be really strong to withstand the winds. I cant find them living in any other part of the city.

I don't think we even get spider wasps, those centepede things and trapdoor or jumping spiders here.
So if you come to visit, don't bring any along! :p
I don't think this spider can leave the ground so it probably can't escape this room as there's a step to get outside. Still, it's working as a way of keeping my sister out of here even when it doesn't show itself.
No giant moths for us either. ;)
I think I got my spider phobia when I went round my friends house for a sleepover when I was about 7 and the window was right by my bed and it was a hot summer so we opened it and all these spiders spilled in and went across the bed and there was like a whole nest of them. >_<

The spider in my bathroom is not a widow. The widows here live mainly in the forests and praires. I did find one in my freinds basement years ago. Fascinating specimen. They weave there webs in a funnel pattern. This one was huge. Could of been living there for 5 or 6 years. I never should of told my freind because a few days later he killed it with a can of hairspray and a lighter.
That bastard.
Thats another thing standard teaching wont tell you. Spiders that spin webs live for a very long time compared to mobile spiders like Herbert that use up alot of energy walking about. The longest I have been able to determin was a chesnut spider that lived at my grandmothers front porch was 10 years old. I preety sure some spiders live a lot longer.Size is a indicator of age. Spiders shed there skin just like there cousins in the ocean every equinox and solstice.
When there younger they shed more because there going through a growth spurt.
Theres a spider in the sahara the ancient egyptians use to speak of that was nocturnal and was gigantic with stilts for legs. They called it the Camel Spider, because it would eat camels. I thought they were complete legend untill 3 years ago a Nature film crew captured them on film. When I saw that Nature program I was stunned. They are more terrifying than I ever thought.Trully the stuff of nightmares. One of there film crew said (I wished they had filmed it)he woke up with a giant camel spider loddge on its face like the face huggers in Aliens. The spider crept up on his face and injected a type of neuro pacifier in his nose so he wouldnt feel any sensation at all so as not to disturb, and drained all the fluid from his nose and cheeks. The film crew continued to film the huge spiders in the night walking towards there tents. If you look on the Internet you might find some pictures. I havent the slightest idea what species they came from. I have never seen there type.Could be a whole new species. But what scares me the most is there eyes. Huge nocturnal eyes. The ancient egyptians say they are fast and if you are alone it the desert they will hunt you down in packs and kill you.
I just thoght I would share this because I am afraid sometimes of spiders. Especially these. If more scientific study was done on the camel spider it would surely be the worlds biggest and ferocious spider. Possibly the most intelligent. If I had one It probably would take me many days to gain its trust and let it know In not a food source. But it can be done . They will remember.
Thats a beuty of a moth. I wish we had those over here. I would catch one and call him Mothra.
Update:4:23 pm
I was just looking on the Internet to find a picture of the camel spider and there a American soldier holding up a dead one. The web site says its a hoax.
The web site says that even the Nature show I saw was a Hoax.
That Nature show was on PBS. Wonders of the Sahara. Is it possible that the Nature show made some animatronic camel spiders?
Either way I go by what the Ancient Texts say. The ancient egyptians drew pictures of it thousands of years ago. It is possible it is extinct and there are remains in the desert. Only one way to find out.... TO THE SAHARA!!!

Air date october 8,1996
Narrated by Stacy Keach
The web site has no pictures only transcripts.

It tells the story of the guy that got bitten on the face.
They re-run NOVA alot here so I will be watching and record and post the REAL picture of the feirsome camel spider. So you can all see there eyes. There haunting eyes.
All the other websites I went to say the show was fake. But Im pretty sure NOVA would of taken it off the air a long time ago.

Dammit. Beleive it or not I was looking for those when I came across the goliath. Apparantly their squeal sounds like a baby crying. But with the goliath being in the GBOR, those can't actually be spiders in the genus sense. Hence they belong to a different genus, any ideas?
and moths suck. Spiders I can deal with, they eat flies, wasps, and MOTHS! Yay! but moths serve no purpose but to freak me out and reduce me to a whimpering girl, not a feeling I like. So I hate them, theydeserve to die to preserve my sanity, and my manhood. :)

At first I read in your last sentence "So I ate them"... XD
The pics of those "camel spiders" held by a GI in Iraq is bullshit, a big fat fake. :) I first believed it (except some details like the squealing, which overdid it) but after checking, it proved to be a fake. As I suspected, the things you see on that famous picture are not exactly spiders - don't you think they look like scorpions too ? They're actually something in between, a separate branch in arachnids. Second, the pic is lying about their size because they're shot very close ; but they're not on the same plan as the guy you see behind, so they're not that huge at all. Their maximum speed is about 16 Km/h. The squealing is totally fantasist (NO spiders can squeal, they physically cannot do it), as well as the rumor that they eat camels (or camel livers, depends on the version) or humans or paralyze them to eat them, and so on... Their bite can be extremely painful or cause an infection, but they won't chew you up as they attack animals of their size.
Short, the camel spiders exist and they are big, but the so-called specimens we all saw on the web or via e-mail with those soldiers is a fake.
By the way Yuffie, I noticed a funny thing : the web site you linked to uses as a logo the exact same picture as the SPIDER SOLITAIRE game in Windows ! Open it, it's in your Start menu... ;) The guy just inversed the colors of the pic, and voilà - he's selling "camel spider T-shirts" ! OMG. (-_-)

Arachnapobic... shudder. Can't stand to think about it. Hm... you never have to fight huge ass spiders as bosses in RPGs anymore. You always had to fight one as a boss in a forest or cave in the old school RPGs, and the materia hunter (No, not you Yuffie) or whatever it's called in the mountain in FF7 is like the closest thing for recently. And maybe that unkillable metallic one in FF8. and thank goodness too. With today's graphics I'd be freaked out if you had to fight a big ass tarantula in a more recent game.
Well, Lineage 2 has some nice spiders (though it's an MMORPG, not offline RPG)...

Ah, otherwise there is Shelob in the Return of the King game by E.A. I fought her as Sam, and man it was a tought fight ! XD But I killed her, hehe... With only 2 pixels of life left. (°_°);;;

Dude, you guys are abreviation maniacs.

I don't like 1337 writing, It's just annoying to me, no mater what activity you are currently doing. It's just a pain. I do sometimes use the words though, Like "Woot" and "Owned," but I tend to use normal spelling of them, which, as far as I can tell, people find MORE annoying somehow. The only exception being "skillz," which I spell wrong when I don't pay attention.
:flagca:
Well, if you were to read the article "woot" and "owned" aren't really correctly spelt. They're words cut out of words, if that makes sense..
Astrolounge
11-12-2004, 10:28 AM
I mean I don't put numbers in their spelling.
I DID read the article. I ment this; I spell it "woot" not "w00t" (no zero's) and I don't put a 3 and such in "owned," also owned IS a word, it's just not normally used in that context.
(ie: "I owned a bike like that a few years ago, but I sold it for booze money.")
silverDistortioN
11-12-2004, 03:09 PM
i think it's all a matter of context myself. for example......
..................................
well, i can't think of anything, but odds are i'm right, i think. >.>
You're right owned is a word, but like you said in the context you used it, it ISN'T a word. =)
silverDistortioN
11-12-2004, 06:43 PM
actually, it is... you just have to think about how it was originally intended...
for instance, "you got owned!" probably had some subtext along the lines of "big bubba just bought you for a cigarette and now you're his bitch!"
...not to imply it doesn't anymore. >.>
I don't really see anyone using 'owned' anymore. Unless it's part of some other word, like http://rpgn.lintbox.net/hosting/userfiles/Kilu/stallowned.jpg
It's PWND these days :o It's funny how variation for these words come from simple typos.

Mithrandir

Well I have to say that we really can't beat you on that!
Well, ski resorts have now these snow cannons that "create" snow. So that's not a problem for them. Actually that was the first " real" snow of the season. Some fell before but quickly melted. It's going to snow all week though according to the weather channel...

I know all about snow machines, you can actually rent them from the moutain here for private use, but I also know they make pretty crappy snow.
And groomed runs suck.
Snow machines are only really used to create a snow "base" for powder to pile up on. :)
Especially Champagne powder...

actually, the lower the temperature is, the closer fahrenheit and celsius get to one another. so when i tell my american friends that it's -40 outside, they can take it as either fahrenheit or celsius. but when i tell them it's 3 degrees out (which it is), if they thought i meant fahrenheit it would actually be -16.

01-04-2005, 06:54 PM
The book of the dead was an ancient tome of spells and enchantments the Egyptians belived would protect you during your journey through the evil underworld before you got to thier idea of "heaven."
The scale needs to be made of gold, (or more commonly plated with gold) have the Eye Of Horus in the center of it, and be capable of weighing two things at once.
Beyond that, there's no restriction preventing an electronic scale. Although it would be hard to find one with those specifications.
Oh, you would need mumification tools too.

In the south its common to prevent corpses from being sold to schools or witchcraft as well as treasure seekers. Well thats what my grandma use to say. I think its to stop.....THE ZOMBIES!!!
The other day on my way to my brothers house we were driving on Roosevelt Rd. that has a cemetary one each side by the city limits and as we were passing the jewish cemetary on the right going eastbound you could see by the fence 5 fresh graves. Child size. I thought that was strange. Poor kids.
