Well since I am first I would like to say the purpose of this thread is to well....nominate a film that maybe others haven't seen but what you think others may like. The rarer the film the better, i.e. saying star wars is ok but it is probable that most people have seen it.
I nominate Stephen King: The Langoliers a made for TV film (from the collection of books - "Four Past Midnight") about a flight that goes through a time warp leaving only 10 people on the plane, kinda like the Bermuda triangle phenomenon. Here is a link: http://www.firsttvdrama.com/show2/history/lango.php3
I suggest you watch this i think it is great, if you cannot get the film , the book is better anyway, get that too:)

Any of the 25 Blind Swordsman:Zatoichi movie's staring Shintaro Katsu.
They are very true to life and unique. Not as dramatic as Kurosawa's film's but very well made and entertainig. Some are in black & white but most of them are in colour.
Also check out Casshern. Good futureistic japanese stuff.
There are'nt many good american film's. The latest one by Michael Mann is good,Collateral.
Chronicle's of riddick was good. Thought the story focused to much on that blasted knife. More like Chronicles of the knife.
Haven't seen The Langoliers since it had first aired on TV. I should dig out my tape of it sometime...
There are'nt many good american film's.With over 100 years of filmmaking in the US, there are more than enough good films to last a lifetime.
My pick for this point in the thread? Amadeus. It's recent enough that people will recognize the actors (and therefore a little easier to get other people to watch it), and is still one of my favorites.
The jury's still out on the Director's Cut though...
Amadeus. I think I have seen that one. The actor who played Amadeus had an insane laugh in the film :)

Recently seen two damn good films I'd like to recommend.
First up, Saw. A damn good film, guess you'd call it a thriller. Best plot twist I've seen in years, and definately my favourite film of 2004. Don't wanna say anything else cos it's much better if you just watch it.
Second, Ichi the Killer. Not one for the faint of heart. It's a nice Japanese gorefest. If the concepts of over the top torture, violent rape and sliced arteries spewing forth fountains of blood upset you then you might wanna give it a miss. Otherwise, damn enjoyable. Plot's a little weird and makes very little sense, but there's more than enough intestines and arms being ripped off and whatnot to please even the most bloodthirsty of us. :) Definately the most gore I've seen in a film.

Add to the list, Final Destination 2. Finally got ahold of it and I wasn't dissappointed. If you liked the first one you'll like this. Some very cool deaths.

I recommend 'The Eye', and watch the Jap version before Hollywood destroy it with the remake. Also 'Dark City', a good few years old now but a great sci-fi film!
Dark City is good, I definitely agree. Recommended to everyone.

i must ask has anyone seen blade 3? i was hoping to get a feel for it befor i send/wast money on it
tanisthalon
12-22-2004, 07:13 AM
Yes I have seen Blade Trinity :).
I preferred it to the second but the first still rules the trilogy. Excellent start, slow story building the middle but more than watchable, then a great climax but felt a little empty with the last 30 secs/minute of the film.
I do recommend it, it is very enjoyable. There are many critics out there. It combines elements of the previous films also.
Anyways the girl that plays Abigail is tasty. Looking forward to the spin-off!
I didn't even know of a new Blade movie. Just goes to show how little I actually pay attention to series of movies that has not really interested me to begin with.
I'm looking at the cast (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0359013/fullcredits) of Blade Trinity right now, and I'm a bit more interested in it actually. Some interesting names in there. But, I don't see any character named Angela in there?

^^ I recommend my favourite romantic comedy of this year:
Love actually
actually, it's from last year, but I only got to watch it a few weeks ago...
it's hilariously funny, with a good deal of situational comedy making the more cheesy parts less cheesy...
definitely a must-see :)
tanisthalon
12-22-2004, 02:13 PM
Humble pie time, its Abigail not Angela. It was a few weeks ago and if my memory serves me correctly she only gets called it once, the rest of the time its 'Whistler'
Ok then. I wonder why Jessica Biel sound so familiar to me :ponder: It's not like i have seen any of those movies or tv series she is credited to. Strangest thing.
tanisthalon
12-22-2004, 02:45 PM
She looks familiar to me. The missus believes she played Miss Winters in Scream 3. Not the real Miss Winters, the actress acting as Miss Winters. I am getting confused now lol.
Hot chick that can look after herself. Although not as hot as her from 24 and The Girl Next Door!!!
I think I should recommend The Girl Next Door.
In addition to Jessica Biel here is a list of films, I remember her in Cellular now:
# Elizabethtown (2005) (post-production) .... Ellen
# Stealth (2005) (post-production) .... Lt. Kara Wade
# Blade: Trinity (2004) .... Abigail Whistler
# Cellular (2004) .... Chloe
# It's a Digital World (2004) (voice) .... Regrettal
# The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003) .... Erin
# The Rules of Attraction (2002) .... Lara Holleran
... aka Regeln des Spiels, Die (Germany)
# Summer Catch (2001) .... Tenley Parrish
# I'll Be Home for Christmas (1998) .... Allie
# Ulee's Gold (1997) .... Casey Jackson
# "7th Heaven" (1996) TV Series .... Mary Camden Rivera (1996-2001)
... aka 7th Heaven: Beginnings (USA: rerun title)
... aka Seventh Heaven
This might be a good time to resurrect the Celb's Thread. Maybe I will, maybe I won't.

Finally saw Alexander. It was good. About as good as Troy. Would make a good weekend movie.
Good to hear the ancient names. They did leave out much of the story. Like the burning of persepolis for that woman (cant remember her name) and the visit to the egyptian oracle or the building of that mole to the Island and others.
What was great was the battle in India. Those elephants were awsome. That little dude on top of that armored elephant throwing spears down at the enemy was so cool.
When I was younger I read that there were still temple ruins in afganistan and southern russia that were made by the greeks to honor alexander. The muslims probably destroyed them like those big buddah statues.

House of flying Daggers is my fave!I love Zhang Ziyi, the battle seen are sugoi!
Dawn of the Dead (2004) - I've watched this film already like 1x times. Its awesome... Everyone who havent watched this movie already and is friend with games â la Resident Evil / Silent Hill should check it out.
Its not the violence what makes this film good. The shocking scenes are brilliant. It wont let ya cold, I promise!
I'm not really someone who is saying like "bloooood!!! O____O", thats not the point but dawn of the dead was one of the best movies I've ever seen. Even if it was produced on low budget. It got something VERY special...

I agree 100%. Awsome movie. The unedited version is great.
That preacher sent chills up my spine the way he talked. Its what resident evil 1&2 should of been like. Even the 1970 version is good. Im glad they keept out the bikers in the new one.
Ive seen both over 5 times and read the comic books. Still looking for part 3&4 of the comic.
I'd recommand Kill Bill I and II. At first, I was a little reluctant to see them but there are really great. The references to old kung fu and western movies are really well made. The violence is so extreme that it becomes less scary than funny after a while. Finally, all the characters Tarantino created for Kill Bill are really great, especially The Bride, Elle Driver and Bill. There are maybe not the best movies of the last ten years but you definitely have a good time watching Uma Thurman fighting...

It may probably be based on or around the 4th game, as Alice is infected with the virus presumably similar to the villagers in the game. Anderson has been quoted as saying something like :- the 1st was a prequel to the game, 2nd intersects the games, 3rd a sequel to the games.
Only put the spoiler there in case whomever reads it hasnt seen the 2nd film and doesnt know Alice is infected :).

I recommend "The Little Mermaid". I watched it for the first time in ages the other day and there's so much you miss in those sort of films when you're a kid. :D
It's like pantomime in this country, it appears innocent to young children but adults can spot all the hidden innuendo in it.

Lord Draud
01-24-2005, 01:06 AM
heh yeah they do that all the time, even in things like buggs bunny has a lot
The Silence of the Lamb.
I had seen that movie three years ago and I just saw it again. It is truly a masterpiece. The story itself is quite interesting. A serial killer known as "Buffalo Bill" murders young women and rips their skins before throwing them in a river.
Even the FBI seems to have difficulties to find the murderer. Their only hope lies in Hannibal Lecter, an ex-psychatrist who has been sent to jail after having eaten several of his patients. But Lecter accepts to communicate with one people only : Clarice Starling, a trainee. In exchange of story about her past, he agrees to giver her clues, riddles to solve, and which, maybe, just maybe, may help her solving the case.
What I liked in this movie is the careful construction of the atmosphere. The scenes between Clarice and Lecter, although it's all about words, are as scary as the "gore" scenes are. The story is cleverly made too, even if the viewer has immediately all the cards in his hand. You see what is going to happen, and you can't help to hope it IS not going to happen.
The actors are really great too, especially Jodie Foster and Anthony Hopkins.
Well, I know it's not a particulary recent movie but, it is always good to discover or re-discover good things. ^^

I forgot to mention this before, but a film I saw recently I thought was pretty good was The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou, staring Bill Murray. It has very hokey underwater special effects, but that just makes it all the more funnier. ;)
I'm not even sure how to describe it really. It's one of the weirdest movies I think I've ever seen. This is the plot outline from IMDb.com (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0362270): "With a plan to exact revenge on a mythical shark that killed his partner, oceanographer Steve Zissou (Murray) rallies a crew that includes his estranged wife (Huston), a journalist (Blanchett), and a man who may or may not be his son (Wilson)."
I definitely am glad I saw it, though. And I recommend it to all!

Only bone I have to pick is that they cut out the part on back to the future 2 were old biff has changed the past, returns and dies/disappears. its a great part and should have been left in the final version

i agree, the story was just so predictable. paltrow was horrible, and the jokes were all bad. unless they were deliberatly trying to make a movie that a replica of something from the 50s or 40s, then it was allright, i guess.

I saw the Dune movie recently (2000 version). Funny story , A friend of mine had a copy he had taped off the space channel and let me watch. So I'm watching it and about 1/5 of the way through the credits come up. So I turn off my T.V in disgust and start cursing my friends name. I later go back watch the rest of the tape and find the remaing 4/5.

1.Schilnders list-exceptionally moving film in which the enigmatic Oskar Schindler a member of the nazi party went out of his way to safe more than 1000 Jews(based on true story)
2.The Dead Zone-after becoming involved in a car crash and awakening unconscious for 5 years he awakes with the power of foresight and puts this power to good use.
3.Usual Suspects-a marvellous film with one of the films best twists-that’s all I can say. I will post one film a day on here

Just watched a film called eXistenZ and I want to recommend it to everyone. Here is some information of the film.
The film tells a story about a game .But this is no ordinary game. The world of eXistenZ is in the future, so the game is controlled by a joystick that looks something like an internal organ. You interface directly with the game by inserting a umbilical cord like tube into your 'bio-port,' a small hole in the small of your back.Once plugged in, the game takes you to a virtual reality, so you can experience the game without leaving the your own room. The point of the game is unknown. You play the game, and as you progess, the story becomes more clear to you.

existenz, featuring its cheesy acting and special effects, is another one of those films that make the audience question reality. not *actual* reality, however, but some sort of stupid, pretend reality. it's about comparable to an episode of that new twighlight zone series, in my opinion. (sorry if i'm insulting your tastes, Vidus. i just didn't like it that much.)
anyway, i saw kapo a month or so ago. it's an italian film which takes place at a concentration camp during world war II. it follows the story of a teenage jewish girl who conceals her jewish heritage and eventually comes to power as a nazi-equivalent camp guard (aka a kapo). it's a story of corruption, freedom, love, and death. truly brilliant, i must say.
also, it's old and black & white.

Anyone confirm that a film is to be made based on the megadrive game KID CHAMELEON? I just decided to cheat to finally finish the game and guess what?
It is solid and long, no saves obviously and to be honest i cannot see how anyone could finish that game without cheating...its levels so numerous and hard I find it difficult to understand what the game developers were thinking.

ummm another film I would recommend people to watch would be Narc- a detective story with a slight twist near the end, a well developed story and well thought characters. Also (most people would have seen it) Reservoir Dogs directed by Quenten Tarantino like Quenten its not a linear narrative based on a group of robbers who have stolen which it seems are precious stones, but a member of the group is a police officer undercover...well worth the watch if u have not seen it.

Recent viewings.
Van Helsing, pants to be honest. Wasn't very impressed.
Daredevil. Finally. What a great job they did. A few flaws (kingpin being black? Murdock not being blond?) But all in all I loved it, an instant favourite in my eyes, kinda hoping there'll be a sequel before too long.
Harry Potter three. Suprisingly enjoyable, wasn;t expecting it to be that much fun.
Our house (Ben Stiller, Drew Barrymoe (so hot)). A slightly amusing film, bit naff in places but good all round entertainment, worth a look if you really really like Stiller.
Soul Plane. Fantastic. I'm a big fan of these kind of "black comedies". It's not quite as daft as the likes of "I'm gonna get you sucka" but definately a film I'll see again. Snoop Dogg understandably steals the show, if you thought he was smooth in Starsky and Hutch then take a look, he plays himself so well. ;)
Caligula (Malcolm McDowell) Wow. Fantastically sick. McDowell does a fine job of playing a character so twisted. Which, considering some of the things the role calls for, is no easy task. If you're a fan of Caligula himself, or of movies designed to have a little "eeewww" factor then you'll like it. (It also has plenty of boobies in it :D )
I'll pop by again when I watch some new ones.

For those who like action I would like to recommend films with Bruce Lee. This guy really knows martial arts. I'm sure that many of you know this guy and have watched his films but if someone hasn't those are the number one action films. Nowadays there isn't actors that could to somethig like Bruce Lee did, the physique of that guy was something out of this world. Vandamme, Arnold, Stallone or Chan are nothing compared to Mr Lee.

He had less than 1% body fat

The greatest Fighter to have lived Yep I knew those things and that's the reason why admire him. In many of those films they had to slow down Lee's punches and kicks in the editing process. Ok, they do it still in some movies but just to make the fight look better. These days they usually have to speed up the motions to make them look good. I really am sad that he left this world too early, he would have done many legendary action movies.
The enter the dragon is the film for everyone who like to see real action.

Bruce Lee is for defenite one of the most talanted of people to ever grace the Earth, his skill is really admirable, his films are packed with his action (although most are 'B'movies), he was truly the best, shame he died so young.
Grey Fox
03-22-2005, 08:23 PM
Yep I love Bruce Lee cos he's a legend, I got all of his films on DVD and more. His speed and power and the incredible and the usage of weaponry make him unique in every aspect. As soon as he did that 1 inch punch I knew he was the man and will always be the man. No other martial artists has practioned in what he excels at that’s why he is so good. There has been lots of controversy over how he hasn't had many real live choreographed fights and that he would not win against certain practitioners, especially against that guy who went in the jungle for 2 years to develop his technique. But Bruce could flatten them all. What makes me sad is that he left too early and that he didn't finish his style jeet- kune -do and that there wouldn't have been Bruce wannabee's like Bruce Le or Bruce Li, and Jet Lee who’s just a rip off and that everything he does is speeded up. Anyway's my favourite film would be Enter the Dragon and second Way of the dragon in which he starred.
Lord Draud
03-22-2005, 11:27 PM
yes i agree he was the best, how ever near the end he did have trouble with his body, also jet lee while not as good as him in some regards is still pretty fantastic tehy to slow him down in teh editing process and he never misses a mark, he can hit a pont in the air with a kick and come back the next day stand in teh exact same spot and hit the EXACT same spot mind you i only realy like a few of his movies......like black mask!
Yojimbo
03-23-2005, 08:21 AM
well to be honest i find that Jet Lee is a major rip off artist, he has tried to impersonate Bruce too much and frankly he cannot pull it off, Bruce Lee could do flying kicks whilst Jet Lee had to use a rope in one of his films, i cant wait to see the day when/if another Bruce is to be born.
daniel
03-23-2005, 09:17 AM
That film was Romeo must die...pure rubbish it was too I nearly fell asleep. and the rope stunt flying kick was so pahetic that it summed up both the film and jet lee.
PLEASE watch that film just for the flying kick-on-an-iinvisible-rope. It is hilariously stupid!
But please it didn't stop there mr. jet lee actually has that look on his face all the way through the film like "wow i am the best ever" when really he is a jumped up little tit head. NO it did not stop there, nearly all action is speeded up so it looks like a vcr on fast forward and worse is that soe of the stuff is really badly done ...he jumps over a fence on one of them. looks like he has been lifted over it by god. PATHETIC I really hate that crappy git
-----------------
I make a film where bruce must avenge the death of good martial arts films. He must get to the top of the "evil jet lee pagoda" where he meets up with a baddy on the 4 floors.
Baddy 1 is Bruce Li who's speciality is impersonation and rubbish skill. Bruce takes his head off with a pair of nunchaku.
Baddy2 is Bruce le who again is an imposter, this time bruce dismantles him with the dragon attack "dragon whips his tail" ....this sucker didn't stand a chance with a broken rib cage
Baddy 3 is a group of jet lee fans. They are only kids so bruce knocks them all unconcious with a variation of the "death grip"
Baddy 4 is Jet lee, upon discovering that its really a fake jet lee and a poor pot dummy at that bruce checks outside.
There he finds jet lee suspended on what looks like a rope. Jet lee challenges bruce to a flying kick competition but forgets that this movie is more realistic than his. Bruce flies at him and jet's rope snaps from the swing.....
Film ends as jet lands a few storey's below with everyone gathering around his pahetic karkass.
THE END
and the name of the film? "Jet lee must die"
ps it is jet li not jet lee

Jackie Chan really knows his stuff but that's nothing compared to Lee's skills. Now when you mentioned it I watched Rush hour recently and I really think that Chan has succeeded to do humorous action films. In this section I think he is very skillful.

Well I believe that Jackie Chan is better than Jet lee at martial art lets get it right, Jet Lee isn't fantastic, all of the fights I have seen him in, are either speeded up and there's a rope involved. But Jet Lee is up there with the rip off's of Bruce Lee. Why bother he was the best there was, and by rein acting him people must think that people like Bruce li/le and Jet Lee are up to Bruce Lee's standards but they are sadly mistaken. Lets ever see if Jet Lee can use nunchuckau like Bruce Lee did in scenes such as Enter the dragon. And people that was not speeded up infact on numerous scenes they had to tell Bruce to slow down for the cameras cos he was that fast.
Yojimbo
03-23-2005, 06:21 PM
well all we have to say about Bruce' speed, take a look at the scene when he is fighting MrHann in 'Enter the Dragon' and just watch the kick bruce pulls off, i paused it and played it frame by frame, and after just 1 frame you couldnt see his leg, thats how fast he was.
to be honest, this Jet Li character still doesnt match Bruce' speed when speeded up. how dare these con artist try to impersonate him

its about a manned mission to mars, a fake mission. NASA make it look like the crew have succesfully landed on Mars and the coverage is showed to family and friends and the public (i think). on the apparent way back from mars everything is going to plan until the fake satalite placed to land in Earths atmosphere (satalite pretending to have the crew in) crashes and everyone outside NASA thinks the crew have died. the crew escape knowing that NASA are going to kill them to make it all look real, and the crew all split up and try to get away in a rocky desert area. a news reporter who believes that the mission was a hoax anyway is trying to find some of the crew to bring NASA to its knees for faking a mission. two of the crew are hunted by NASA and killed, but one is found just in time by the reporter and an aeroplane chase between NASA and the reporter and crew member begins. NASA fail to kill them off and the crew member rushes in to his own fake funeral and see's his wife who thought he was dead, and thats where the story ends.

For all those arguing, yes Bruce Lee is the best. But do you really wish there were no others? If so we'd be left with only the martial arts films of Bruce Lee? (and those who came before him). Bruce Lee is dead, and I think it's not a bad thing that there are people out there at least making some effort to keep the genre alive. Maybe Jet Li isn't a particularly good martial artist... but then, he's an actor. Bruce wasn't a particularly good actor...but then he was a martial artist. Don't be so quick to chide other martial artists just because they can't measure up. Variety is the spice of life.

Phoneing the theater next week to see when tickets go on sale. I'm going to see it opening night. I can't wait. It's going to be great.
It will probably suck like the two previous ones. Sure, it's going to be darker, but I have no expectations on it.

So no one's seen a good film iin over a week? Well, I guess I'll go again. I know someone brought this film up before, but I recently got a chance to see Hotel Rwanda. Very thouight-provoking and moving. What got to me most was a lot of the behind-the-scenes stuff, where you actually got to see Paul Rusesabagina in the flesh and hear his thoughts on the situation. The movie makes you want to go out and help those less fortunate.
In the coming days, I'll be watching one of my favorties, House of Flying Daggers [can't wait to see the behind-the-scenes stuff!] and Birth, which looks to be a very odd Nicole Kidman film. Will keep you all posted.

read the white writing below to see what i think the intersesting features were
1) they tried making a base on the moon and messed up and the moon crumbled, then the guy goes like 1000's of years into the future and civilisation is back to where it started like the stone age, and the guy looks up and the crumbled moon is orbiting Earth in little pieces.
2) that computer guy in the mirror thing that has lasted 1000's of years and can remember everything and everyone he has met.

Everyone has probably seen it but if not I reccommend the Stephen King film "The Lawn Mower Man", about a simple man who has his simple mind enhanced by virtual reality only for it to go wrong. He becomes ultra intelligent and it is not long before he becomes a meglomaniac intent on world domination.
Great acting and great quotes like "As you can see doctor angelo, my level of intelligence has surpassed yours and I cannot allow your fear of what you don't understand to get in the way of my work"
"YOU'RE NAIVE STUPIDITY MAKES ME VERY ANGRRRRY"

I liked the begining but I think they tried to hard to make him evil. I mean thats not enough to make me evil. They should of had some jedi's teasing him in the temple and then he would of gotten angry and used the force to choke them or something. After he killed someone then he would be fugitive with obiwan pursueing him through the galaxy to administer the punishment of mediclorine cleansing and life as a normal person, and then into the arms of the darkside seeking sanctuary for him and padme. Who was also pursued because she was pregnant and the jedi council feared the birth or it was unnauthorized because they took a vow or something.
I got confused in some parts because I couldnt remember the clone wars.
I thought that kid was gonna survive. He was so cool using that sabre.
Geosgaeno

but in a way he was being teased if you think about all the times Obi Wan was holding him back from doing things, the anger built up and up and Palpatine hammered the final nail in the coffin and turned him to the dark side.
Possible 'Spoiler' below, but not much of one?
he was made into the perfect evil and the producers made him seem very sinister indeed....Good Job guys, i mean he killed off the young padwans (nice use of ruthless evil), and he even was going to choke off Padme until Obi Wan stepped in. Great Movie and Palpatine is the best.

Itsy tiny spoiler alert!!!!
But the one phrase that kinda tied the evil transformation for me was what he told padme before he chocked her. That he would take control of the republic and they would rule the galaxy. Then I thought ah I see,and my mind filled in the rest, but the movie should of done that.
He would of made a good ruler. And Padme could of been the one to nudge him in that direction and be more evil. But the way she was I could'nt stay married to that. I need more support in a relationship pregnant or not.
Geosgaeno
05-20-2005, 07:22 PM
i would have chocked Padme too, she tried to stop him like Obi Wan, them two would have been chocked off there and then if it was left to me.
Possible Spoiler again:
I also liked the scene after Obi Wan and Anakin (Darth Vader he is known at that point in the film) have faught and Vader is left to burn in the lava but survives, his burnt body looks cool (bad attemp of a joke ehh :P), and also i thought the film could have cut out on soppy love scenes like when Padme announces her pregnancy, me and cousins burst out laughing in the cinema in embarassment.

Not an Oscar winning storyline, but a great mindless fun film to watch. Some good action sets, Brad and Angelina pull it off well.
