Hey there,
My latest project has been to make my music available to browse over the web, so people can request stuff and just take a look at whats available. Feel free to check it out and leave feedback, questions or requests here in this thread. http://www.rpgamers.info/images/smilies/smile.gif
http://www.rpgamers.info/images/smilies/note.gif http://www.vgmusic.info/ http://www.rpgamers.info/images/smilies/note.gif
I can't run an FTP anymore, but I can upload requests for you. Feel free to suggest features for the db too. Enjoy http://www.rpgamers.info/images/smilies/smile.gif
** No More Requests Are Being Taken At This Time **
Please leave any requests you may have here in this thread. We can discuss contact details and server information over private message, however my PM box gets pretty full, so please leave basic request posts in the thread. Thanks http://www.rpgamers.info/images/smilies/smile.gif
Available request options:
a) IRC DCC File transfer
b) AOL Instant Messenger File Transfer
c) Setup an FTP and I'll upload it to you directly.
d) Suggest other options.
I will -not- email these files, so please do not suggest this option when requesting.

By the god's your collection is vast.
I am really interested in AOE 2 ost and GensoSuikogaiden:sword of harmonia
and Suikogaiden Vol 2:last duel crystal valley.
How can you upload these for me?
Locke Cole
10-11-2004, 11:03 AM
Thats actually only about half of it so far jetblue :)
But anyways, if you send me a PM over the forums with an ftp I can upload to, I'd be glad to do so. Other methods such as AIM also work (AIM name: rpgamersnet).

Hello, nice collection :)
I got a question regarding the website...
How did you do it.. ?
I imagine you did not write yourself every track with every size, and every length.. ?
Locke Cole
10-11-2004, 02:11 PM
Actually... originally I was going to do it by hand, but then my good ol' friend Laban smacked me upside the head and told me the amazing powers of PHP and MySQL. We have a custom script that indexes my songs and adds them into a database.
Then we wrote scripts to output and search the db, and poof, you have a web music database. The db contains some information not shown such as CRC checks and MD5 verification codes, however I'm still developing it.
Much of the credit goes to Laban, he has been a huge help with coding issues and getting me started. Everything is based off his code. I simply edited it some to suit my needs. :)
Myrkul
10-11-2004, 04:40 PM
That's nice. I know the power of php, but i did not know it could index files :)
Is there a way to have the source of the code/script ?
Having nearly the same number of albums as you, i would like to make a similar website...
I know there's already some tools to index directory/files, but not this way (with length...)
Do you think it's possible? :)
Locke Cole
10-11-2004, 06:20 PM
The scripts are still very buggy, and need a lot of work before they are released to anyone. There are some flaws, and its pretty customized, so its not suited for other collections at this time. Maybe once its all fixed up we'll work towards a release version of the script. :)
BAMAToNE
10-13-2004, 12:28 AM
I have those two Suikogaiden albums, too, if Locke doesn't have to time upload it or something.
That's pretty cool, the db. I wish I could do something like that. Alas, databases are not something I'm any good with. Congrats. :)
Locke Cole
10-13-2004, 05:24 AM
Well once its fully developed, maybe we can make it work for everyone :) Its still got a long way to go, updating is done funny, and detecting modified/deleted files is still buggy, but its making progress. Indexing 22,000 or so mp3s takes approx 2hours on a 1.7GHz celeron box. It indexes bitrate, length, CRC, MD5, filesize, and some other random information.
Hey that's cool. I think I'm starting to be interested in this as well :) :D

Good Lord... I can only hope that one day my collection will grow up to be as.... large.. as yours and Laban's.. I would gladly offer trades.. but I think you have what I have *giggle*. I would like to put in a request for Star Ocean 3 ~ Til the end of time Vol 1 and 2 and both Studio Ghibli collections.. I'm afraid to look through everything else you have.. I might find way too many other things I would want!

Hellstorm: How would you like to go about the file exchange? I can no longer run an FTP server, and email is out of the question.

Thank You Locke. (bowing in gratitude)
I was outside enjoying hearing the cold rain on the leaves and when I came in I saw the server was done. I hope it was'nt to difficult. I saw the server log kept kicking you out. I have to tweak it.
Have you seen the intro for Suikogaiden vol.1? Its one of my favorites. I like it better than the intros for suikoden 1,2,3. And the theme is so soothing. Now I can hear it anytime instead of playing the game on the Ps1 and overheating the motor.http://www.rpgamers.info/images/smilies/smile.gif

What sort of feasible file transfer methods are there? I've been searching the net desperately for the Grandia Original Soundtracks, and now I've found them it doesn't look like I can get them anyway! AND I'm only on dial-up, which I'm sure doesn't help file transfer in the slightest...
There is always the option for you to join our irc chat and try to get Locke dcc them to you :)

My AIM name is "rpgamersnet". If I'm on AIM, I'm available to send you files. My work, hell, my life is on my PC, so I'm on between 8am-1am usually, AFK sometimes but usually near the PC. I can always leave the files sending and go do other stuff.
In fact, I just finished sending an album over AIM to Pacey. The reason I like using AIM rather then other messengers is it has a "send directory" option, which is godlike for things like this. I don't mind other options if you prefer, feel free to suggest them.
Zorathenne, your requests have been uploaded, do enjoy. Kilu, you're up next. :)

I have just added a new feature to my web database thingy, that allows me to mark an album as "verified". If it has a checkmark on the folder, that means that all of the tracks appear complete, are properly named and the album is generally complete. :)

Hello, Locke.
When you were still hosting your FTP server I usually tried to download as much as I possibly could because I wanted to be a server. I still do, and now since I'm getting a T3 line, I may be able to, but, my collection is still small. I was wondering, could I send you a hard drive so you could simply copy everything over? No muss and fuss with the internet, no connection speeds, it'd just be easier. If you like this idea, that'd be great, because after I get the T3 line, I'd like to give back to everyone that I've so thankfully taken from. I don't know, just an idea...

Hi well if you ever get the time, I would like very much in my collection Tekken Tag Tournement :) no rush Locke but thats my first and probably final request;) :)
Oh and I have just realised you have the direct audio from PS2, a few questions. The difference between this and the CD? The way in which the ps2 audio was extracted and if it wasn't recorded, how was it extracted, with what program? (up until now i believe it impossible to simply rip the music audio so I take it the audio was recorded)
Hey LC.
I was wondering if it isn't much of a hassle if you can upload the Garou Densestsu: Mark of the Wolves OST up if possible on an AIM connection.

Hello :)
I'll try my luck again with Locke :) (i already asked this 2 months ago)
-- Is there any chance to release the script / code of your "Website" ? --
:)
I really would like to do the same ... I own a bit less than 800 albums too.
And i would be glad to help ppl like you do Locke. But i would like to do it the same way as you, showing my list. By hand it will take forever...
Zeugma 440
12-21-2004, 07:23 AM
If not, I might get to work on a similar script for my own needs.
It will generate a HTML or XML catalog thanks with a PHP or Perl engine (don't know yet). If you have any suggestion, please let me know before I start :D
Zeugma 440

After a deeper thinking, I think the best would be to create an application (not scripts) that would generate automatically a static HTML catalog (way faster than XML or dynamic stuff) containing all the albums and titles, once you have provided the program with the necessary information (folders, albums info, type of sorting...).
The database itself would be in custom files generated by the program. It would contain all the necessary info for the titles (name, length, everything in the tag) and albums (name, release date, composer, genre, platform, completed/not...). Thus it would be possible to sort the HTML catalog by title, composer, year, platform (...) when generating it.
What do you think about this idea ?
Myrkul
12-22-2004, 12:04 PM
That's a good idea Zeugma :)
There are already some softwares around that can "generate" an html list of your "folders"...
It can list many things (folders name/size/date/ - files name/size/date ... - sorting..)
But so far i don't have found anything that can calculate the length of all mp3 (exept Winamp generated playlist...), and all the soft generates only 1 big html page.
But it's better than nothing, and i'll try to do something with this until i can find better.
Better than nothing, but can you do a good "mp3/album search engine" like on Locke website with only html ?
Zeugma 440
12-22-2004, 12:15 PM
I can handle all the tags & lengths issues, that's not a problem.
The only problem with static webpages is that searching is not possible. One has to set a database up, and code sc ripts for a dynamic website.
Do you think this feature is critical (i.e. is that really important to you) ?
Myrkul
12-22-2004, 01:57 PM
how will you do for lengths ? by hand ? O_O
( i got more than 20,000 tracks.. - and that's only vgm )
Personally, i'll do without a search database.
Locke's website is really awesome, i'll do the "cheap" version ;)

12-22-2004, 03:18 PM
Hey Myrkul I find a good program that can help you the program name is MP3 HTML GENERATOR and you can find the shareware in the next page http://www.iprogramdev.com/soft.php/MP3-HTML-Generator-13544.htm
its easy to use but its very simple and also have the option of put a search engine of the files so hope it can help it.
Zeugma 440
12-22-2004, 04:49 PM
Myrkul> Nope, it's possible to get the length of any MP3 automatically, thanks to some libraries. I'm thinking about using a tiny part of bass to retrieve lengths and tags.
eViL bAz> Seems interesting... but the IDE is overwhelmed with buttons and tabs, their "output string" looks real messy when adding a lot of info, and before all, it's not freeware :p
Its search engine relies on a perl script and structured files. Granted, it's way easier to implement than a database but I need to test it for a large amount of files, in order to see if it is really slower than a SQL-based search :wonder: But that's not really where I want to lead this project.
My idea is to generate expandable/collapsible lists that will be included in one big HTML file. One level for the alphabet, the other for the albums (that will be included in the 1st one) :
+A
>-Actraiser
>+Albert Odyssey Gaiden
>>track1 | bitrate | length | ...
>>track2 | bitrate | length | ...
>>...
>-Alundra
>-...
-B
-C
-...
Locke's site in done in PHP, so I suppose there's a database behind all. This implies that he has rights to run PHP and set up a database on his website, which is not always the case for everyone (Yahoo basic hosting plan, anyone ? :D )
With a static page, anybody should be able to host his list without activating anything on his website. The exp/coll catalog is the best idea to keep a clean layout and provide many information, IMO.
Myrkul
12-22-2004, 04:57 PM
you said "1 big html" file...
I already know how to expend/collapse links in html..
But it's like you said, it's on the same page if you check the source...
I have generated my list of albums with titles on a single html page, and it takes more than 3 MB (and there's only track titles and file lengths! )
Nobody wants to load such a large file :)
Zeugma 440
12-22-2004, 05:25 PM
:wonder: I always forgot that when reaching numbers like 20.000 items, the size becomes a real problem, especially on the internet.
*thinks : how to combine the universality of pure HTML and the lightweight of dynamic output ?*
I believe there is no technological compromise to that problem yet. I'll eventually keep the two solutions available on the software, so that users can decide when to switch from one to the other.
Do you have rights to set up a database system or to run perl scripts on your site, Myrkul ?
Myrkul
12-22-2004, 06:52 PM
I don't think so!
But do not worry for me.. until i can do the same as Locke, i ll do it the html way...
I just have to do more than 700 pages ( 1 for each album ) and i'll just copy/paste the tracklists ( this is ready ).
It will be a hard and long job (not so hard if you love the copy/paste method), i am very patient anyway. ;)
Zeugma 440
12-23-2004, 06:37 AM
Wow, have fun Myrkul ! :D I'll add this option on the software as well, even if it's a pain in the a** to upload several hundred pages without an FTP (Yahoo basic hosting, anyo*#$ :smash: )
Does anybody have any other suggestion for my software ? Would it be a good idea to make it available both on Linux and Windows (cross-platform compiler or JAVA technology) ?

Np, i have all my time :)
You can see a very first try here now:

( sorry for the annoying ads... :bawl: )
For now, there are only "Home / #" and the first album ( 19XX ) for example ;)
I hope that Locke will not mind my inspiration for the "design"...
I must admit green and blue are very effective on a black background :D

Hello Mr. Locke Cole :)
I have been frequenting RPGamers.net for a few years now. It has always been the best source for game soundtracks http://www.rpgamers.info/images/smilies/smile.gif. Lately it has been hard to find ftp servers that work. anyhow, I am looking for 3 albums, all of which you have, and was wondering if I could grab them from you through IRC or something. I am looking for "Final Fantasy III OST", "Final Fantasy 5 - Dear Friends", and "Final Fantasy Live Concert (Feb 20, 2002)". The person I was grabbing them from went offline with their ftp :/. I am also looking for "Final Fantasy VII Piano Collections", so if anyone has that, it would be forever appreciated http://www.rpgamers.info/images/smilies/biggrin.gif

Hi, i want the Last Blade 2, arranged soundtrack, how can i Setup an FTP?
Zeugma 440

Washizuka Keiichiro> There really should be a tutorial for this :p Download a server software such as GuildFTP, Filezilla FTP server or CesarFTP, read the readme, try the tutorials... if you have a problem don't hesitate to ask us, but not in this area ! (there's a FTP help (http://www.rpgamers.info/forumdisplay.php?f=12) zone for this :) )
Myrkul, Kilu, eViL bAz> I'm gonna create a new thread in the game music area concerning the software I was talking about. Thus our conversation won't spoil Locke's thread anymore :D

Wow, it didn't take long for a mimic of my site :/ Myrkul's is even the same colours and everything, right down to the little check mark folder icon I made.... :)
I was goaling to have something unique, however I guess thats never truely possible once it makes it to the Internet. I pity you for doing all of that by hand though, mine runs off a database (thus the search features), and I could never possibly see myself writing all of that up. If you are looking for a little bit of space to host your list, let me know, and maybe I can be of assistance.

Hehe thx for answerign Locke :)
Yeah i know, this is a copy of your website..hmm and you are right, i will change at least the colors of my version :D ( this will be fast, thx the power of "css" )
But for the rest it's very long to do ... i have done 100 browsables albums on a week. Indeed i just found a way yesterday to go faster now (just a new command on the css file i did not know before).
And for the webspace / hosting, that would be greatly appreciated if you could host me or whatever :)
I just got that damn free french webspace with ads... if you got any idea for a better place ( till it's free :evillaugh: ), i am listening :)

I did not try that :)
Can anyone be hosted by Locke just registering ?
Can we upload any files ? ( i have just html pages and jpg pics )
Is there a limit of space ? ( html pages only will do ~ 2 MB )
Can i host my 20 MB of jpg for my little covers too ? ( they are 200x200 px, but there are ~ 500 pics for now )
I really would like to host those pics, if i can have a host on Locke's website i need to know since i'll maybe have to change the source url for pics :)
(i can host just html pages on Locke's website and redirect pics from my website, but need to change the url code for each page i already did :knockedout: )
:D
There are size limits I suppose, but you can discuss that with Locke.
Locke Cole
01-01-2005, 01:50 PM
You know, if you coded your images properly, you wouldn't need to change anything. You should use relative source pointing, not putting the whole url in the code :p Something like /images/weee.jpg :)
As for the hosting system, I'm sure we can arrange something. You'll need to signup first off :p
http://rpgn.lintbox.net/hosting/

01-01-2005, 02:00 PM
That's what i mean Locke :)
I just asked that if you could "not" take my pics.
For now the url code is: images/xxx.jpg
But when you redirect image from another website you have to enter the full url path no? :)
Indeed, i'm going to register now :)
Locke Cole
01-01-2005, 02:20 PM
Your account has been approved, and has been granted a quota of 20MB. If you do end up needing more, we'll see what I can do :)
Myrkul
01-01-2005, 03:48 PM
Hey that's very nice, thx you :)
Hmm indeed i think i will not host my pics on your server, since it will take much space and i can't mobilise your server just for me ;)
A cover "preview" or picture.. is a nice idea but it takes much space.
In fact there's already 20 mb of pics for 500 albums, i think it will grow to 30 easily for 700..
That's not a problem to host my pics from the other website :)
Just let me know if you can allow me more space but i don't want to abuse you.
I'm not the lonely one that thinks it's a cool idea. I wish you had done the same on your website :)
Maybe we can share pics for both or something..
Washizuka Keiichiro

Dear Locke Cole:
I am new in this forum and I reached it because I can't SIMPLY FIND THE DAMN SOUNDTRACK OF DEWPRISM/THREADS OF FATE elsewhere than here. I have a difficult sittuation: I live on Perú (yeah, the end of the world) so buying anime is like trying to buy wood on Alaska, worst if anime/rpg soundtracks. You see: I have the FTP browser that comes with DAP (Download Accelerator). If I were to ask you for uploading the Dewprism OST to a Mirror Server, would be there a problem if I use this FTP browser or not? If I can use it, I will be glad to know from which server I can download it. Thank you so much for reading my request.

No more requests are being taken at this time.
I am working on a solution to allow you guys to get some of my music, but at this time as you can see just from this topic, I am not able to keep up with all of these requests. Some people arn't on AIM when I check, ftps are down, or people ask for 10 albums at a time .. theres lots of things that slow down the process. My forums' private messages folder is practically full. Until I can find another method of doing things, I'm sorry.
