I just got this in my company e-mail
Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) Alert!
Microsoft is about to release the latest Service Pack for Windows XP. This will soon be available to download from Microsoft's Windows Update site. Please pay attention to any automatic updates, and make sure to NOT install this service pack.
This new release is being tested and we have found numerous problems with this upgrade. We are working with other support groups across the nation to identify the issues and solutions.
I just thought eveyone who uses xp might like to know.
Balony. I don't care who says what, but I'm going to install it as soon as I can.

Well, I've been sent to a web page listing all the incompatibilities of this SP2 and current software running with XP... It was a bit scary. O_O A good part of these progs were obscure and/or boring Microsoft applications, but I noticed a lot of games have problems with it - and I didn't look much further...
So my move is to avoid this service pack at all cost and let impatient people pay the price for a bugged release. Then when all is fixed, I shall update if necessary. :nana:
Heh, even Norton AntiVirus 2004 has to update its core and use an additional process (UsrPrmpt.exe) because of that service pack ! (è_é)

I will wait for people to download it before I install it on mine. I Have to see what it does and if it crashes too much I'm gonna stay with my old windows.
I already received a warning from IBM ( a real one not fake) telling me not to install it before they test the compatibility with the computer apllications.

I never download Windows updates till I know what they do. And how they work. Microsoft has lost my trust; their service packs seem more oriented to be more secure for themselves, therefore messing up all kinds of stuff, rather than making things work better. Oh well.

Amazing, Microsoft was egar to install it in everyones computer and even have the update page showing how to use the automatic updater. It was recalled even before they released it. Shows how much Mircosoft tests thier own stuff. :finger:
I even agree with Kyari, how Microsoft is tring to save their own behind. :shame:

An "XP whore" as we call them. Blindedly installs every patch that comes out, no matter how harmful it may be proven. They have found many issues with SP2 already, and more are bound to surface. This is why I use 98SE and 2000, tested and true OSes which I know I can rely on. Once I get my new harddisk I am upgrading my main PC to 2000, something I've been waiting to do for awhile now. I have no intensions of going to XP, my roommate has it and it has caused us more headaches then anything else.
Some people like it, but I say blah. I don't need all their new crap, 2000 does everything I need it to, and it does so efficiently. :)

It's my nature to test stuff myself before deciding if it's crap or not. Actually, I had doubts when switching to XP, but I've never had problems with it (I mean serious ones : the undeletable video thingy and directX reboot issues are now classics).
Actually, most of the problems I've seen people encounter seemed to come from their hardware (or from their lack of information about computer science, but that's another story). Most of the time, they're too proud to admit that they bought cheap hardware and thus claim that Microsoft owned them :wonder:
...Anyways, to stay on topic, I'll wait until SP2 is thorougly debugged... or rejected by its users. What's the point in immediately installing a huge core update that still have bugs ?

I haven't had any issues with XP, so I have a pretty good reason to like it. Unlike 98SE which fucked my sound output, 2000 which was just so damn slow, and didn't let me run all my games with it.
Plus, it will take a while before finnish version of SP2 is even ready. I'm willing to believe that by the time it's downloadable, some of the biggest issues that people claim there to be, will be squashed.

I don't think I've ever used any of the windows updates. Don't think I want to. :p

:D Being cautious before installing service packs is always advisable... didn't the first XP service pack have bugs, too? I don't remember fore sure, but I know there was some security update or somesuch for XP that was screwy. :spin:

I also remember that the SP4 for Win2K screwed up several things, among which 3DSMax (it corrupted your saved files). They fixed it soon enough, but it makes you wonder nonetheless... :wonder:
