I just found out from Playstation.com that Nobuo Uematsu will only do the opening theme for FF-XII. That sucks. All hopes of him returning to do a full soundtrack like he did up until FF-IX are now gone. Hitoshi Sakimoto will do the remaining 99% of it.
Isn't that like common knowledge by now :) I personally am quite pleased that Sakimoto is the main man. However, as far as I know, saying that Uematsu will do only the opening theme is not entirely true. He will do the main theme, sure, but the main theme will be most likely be used in various different situations and in different forms throughout the game. Examples of similar situations are probably in some other games as well, but FF6 Terra Theme comes to mind first, the same melody plays in the Opening #3 as well. I believe this is how it will be used in FFXII as well.
And don't worry, Sakimoto will whoop your ass :)

Don't forget various things like the Chocobo theme, and fanfare are more-or-less re-used or typicaly redone by Uematsu even if he isn't the main composer. Though, I haven't been impressed by some of the newer FF music recently the last OST I really liked of FFIX's...

THe last OST I liked is FF-IX as well. That's why it's disappointing that he only does a minor role in FF games now.

:D How about we wait until we actually hear the soundtrack in question before deciding that it sucks. ;)

Yeah. I'm having hard time to understand this pro-uematsu, anti-everyone else crap. If you guys didn't like any of the osts since 9, it doesn't mean that this one will suck. Give Sakimoto the chance he deserves.

Give Uematsu a break . . . he's working on FFVII:AC. Having someone else will be fine. I still intend to follow and listen to Uematsu's soundtracks.

Getting hostile? To me, an FF without Uematsu-san is like a Star Wars soundtrack without John Williams.
After FF X-2's soundtrack, I think Square has already tried and failed with me, and think XII will end up like XI in which it has a nice intro followed by two discs of boring music.

A question. Have you heard Sakimotos music before?
If you haven't, check out Vagrant Story and Final Fantasy Tactics/Advance. Pretty much sums up what kind of music Sakimoto does.

I'd like to note, my comment wasn't Pro-Uematsu. Yes, he's a great composer, but I hadn't even bothered to check who did anything after FFIX.
Really, I haven't seen Mitsuda do something soon. Wether it be for Square or anyone else. T-T; He does such great music! Square lost a HUGE talent when he went Freelance. *saddened by Xenosaga II* Oh well...maybe we'll see something by him soon!
As far as Sakimoto, I don't know if it's because I didn't like the game itself, but I didn't like the Tactics Advance music very much. Certainly wasn't "bad" just didn't suite my tastes. Still no play of Vargrant Story...I'll haved to get the OST soon.
As far as Mitsuda goes, I hear he is moving out of vgm business, to movie scores. Newest album that had Mitsudas work that I know of is Shadow Hearts 2. And it's only partially his.
And unfortunately Sakimotos current style, which has changed somewhat from Ogre Battle days, doesn't work as well with limited samples. Fortunately the OST for Tactics Advance has 'Enhanced version' of all the musics as well :) It's a whoopass. The original FF Tactics for psx is somewhat a mixture of his Ogre style and current style. As far as the samples that have been put out to the FFXII official japanese page, if one likes Sakimoto (like me :) ), one will definitely like this score when it comes.
