I would like to take a moment to welcome you all to our new forums. As you are reading this, I am officially announcing the opening of the new forums! We welcome you to register an account and join us on making this new community even better then the old one.
Yes, we had some good times on the old forums, but a change was definately needed. These forums have many features which I think will help enhance your forum experience. Be sure to look around your options panel to get the most out of the features.
As mentioned on the old forums, we do have some new rules, so drop on over to the FAQs page to check up on them. Also, custom avatars are permitted, but please keep them tasteful. Thanks :)
I have added a pile of game sprites and emoticons to enhance your posts, feel free to make use of them, but don't overuse them! :flagca:

:) It's going to take me some time to get used to the interface - I should've used the test boards more often or something. Even :eyes: has become . ;) :hmm:... I wonder if good old :lick: still exists...?

We welcome to the newest member of the community: Zedie9 (http://205.209.144.11/forums/member.php?u=21)
that line is going to be so incredibly weird three years from now... when Locke has to make up a new rank just to accomodate your uncontrollable spamming. ^.~
Hoorj!
Hey Zedie, why an earth are all your post written in blue?
And obviously join dates were reset, that's what Locke said in the old forums. It's a whole new beginning :) Though I agree that :eyes: should have stayed :D

Give me a break boys, I had added almost 400 emoticons in 2 days, I couldn't possibly remember all the old codes as I went along :p
As for registration dates, indeed this is a fresh start. However, hopefully, our old forums will be archived for a long long time to come, so we'll never truely forget who's who.
As for needing to create a new rank, I don't think even Zedie can get past my mass pile of ranks already configured, not for a long time to come. :evillaugh:

I added it for you, Kilu. As well, I just added a pile of emoticons I was planning to add but forget to! Here they are:
:bouncy: :chef: :flagfi: :graduate: :knockedout: :pirate: :tophat: :umbrella:
Also, I created a new category called Misc Icons, and it contains items and stuff like this:
:ambulance: :burger: :cactus: :carrot: :coffee: :mouse: :droplet: :drumstick: :hammer: :heartbeat: :icecream: :joystick: :key: :lifering: :lollipop: :note: :rose: :pizza: :present: :raincloud: :scissors: :star: :sun:
Enjoy!
That was fast :)
:chef: :pizza: :hungry:
Now I can do fun combinations. Hooray :)

It isn't terribly frustrating :wall: or anything, but I am having to get used to the boards. I mean, as accustomed as I was to the old interface, this is a bit different. :spin:
Well, it is different. For people who would be only using RPGN boards more than some others. I for one has been using vbulletin before, and several other BB boards as well(iconboard, phpBB, YaBB) so I have no adjustment troubles :p

I have used other forums, but only on occasion. I was definately for the old system, but this one had too many improvements to say no to switching. I think overall it was well worth the switch, it may be a pay-for forum software unlike most of the others, but you get what you pay for. This thing came preloaded with a pile of goodies, and was a walk in the park to install. Everything is automated in the admin cp, and the only thing I've had to edit code-wise was mainly things I wanted to act or look differently, nothing was broken. (I hope I didn't break them :p)
Now, I need to focus on moving the rest of RPGN over to PHP so I can fully move the domain over, and this can officially be forums.rpgamers.net, not just some IP number.

:umbrella: Don't get me wrong - I wasn't complaining; just replying to your last comment. Overall I welcome the many new features that have come with this new iteration of RPGN. :bouncy:
:wonder: Does this one have the skins feature? (I can't remember.) And if so, did anyone ever manage to skin the look of the old boards? Oh, and another question I've been meaning to ask - nevermind. I'll go ask it in the appropriate thread. ;)
Locke Cole
08-02-2004, 01:12 PM
This forum software does have a skin option, but its quite complicated, and all of our custom edits have to be done to every skin :o Thats why none are currently installed.
On a side note, I've slowly been trying to find useful post icons (the icons you pick when creating/replying to go beside the topic). I've recently added two, a music one and a bunny. :)
I was planning to make a skin that would look like old boards, and started it out with phpBB. Because the tbl files were really easy to edit :p
For these forums however, it's a lot harder to make skins, as far as I know anyway. A friend provided me a place to test it out, and I didn't quite get the hang of it :wonder: Either I would have needed more time, or I was doing it wrong :p
Whichever the case, I didn't finish them (barely started) and now I don't have the time to even think about making those. But oh well :p
Locke Cole
08-02-2004, 04:44 PM
I checked out some of the vBulletin skins, but alas I didn't like any of them too much. This default one is clean and simple, so I figured it would be best for us, for now.

Anyway weldone Locke Cole:)

:) I'm happy with the current look of the boards - they're too new for me to have grown tired of them yet. Eventually, though, it might be worthwhile to bother with other skins. :wonder: Mayhap we can even use Jari's skin... he doesn't need it all.
[Also ~ I really, really like the whole deal where if you hit the edit button within the first bit after submitting, the post is corrected without displaying any editing. :shades: ]

So I noticed I can add people to my forum buddy list. I did this for a few people, but I can't find any links to it or figure out what the point of it is. Help?
So I noticed I can add people to my forum buddy list. I did this for a few people, but I can't find any links to it or figure out what the point of it is. Help?
What are the buddy and ignore lists?
The buddy list is used to keep track of the friends you have made on this forum. By going to your "My vB Home", you'll be able to see which of your friends are currently online, and be able to send them a private message. Adding people to your buddy list also allow you to send private messages to multiple forum members at the same time. You may add any member of the forums to your buddy list by clicking this button in a member's posts.
Ignore lists are used for those people who's messages you wish not to read. By adding someone to your ignore list, those messages posted by these individuals will be hidden when you read a thread.
Only useful thing as far as I can see is the possibility to send PMs to multiple people. Ignore list is more useful, I just hope that no ones using it on me :p
G'day forum, how's it going? This place is better that the other one, cept none of the pictures work for me for some reason. And i can't post a new thread lol. Must just be my net settings or something but all other forums work fine.
Locke Cole
08-04-2004, 09:40 AM
Zedie: Indeed, you can edit your post freely without the edited by... tag for 5 minutes after posting. Handy for correcting silly mistakes and adding finishing touches.
Bamatone: The buddy list can be accessed using the "Quick Links" option across the top of the forums. Select "open buddy list" and it opens a window that looks sortof like an old school ICQ. You can then mass private message buddies, pretty much useless in my opinion :P
Kie: No one else has reported this problem at all, so narrowing it down, I can only come to one conclusion: It must be your end. The images should be working fine, and new threads should also work fine. The only thing that might stop you from posting a new thread is if your browser does not support the WYSIWYG editor script, upon which you'll need to go into your options panel and change it to a lower editor setting. What browser/operating system are you using? I was under the impression vBulletin worked well with all major brand browsers...
Everything seems to work fine now. I just had to alter a few things, 'sall :P

This thing works fine. Only thing I don't really like is the WYSIWYG -editor, because it's slow-loading. The old forums were... old :p
silverDistortioN
08-04-2004, 06:59 PM
i also dislike WYSIWIGGY... i started using the standard one, and it's much, much better.
WYSIWIGGY doesn't count many tags as characters, as it would in the standard editor. not that it matters at all, but there's just something to be said about the imbalance...
plus there's that thing i said about how you can't make minor edits to change a pic.

:wonder: I haven't tried out any of the others yet - nor just using quick reply... I suppose I ought to, some time or other. :spin:
I'm using the standard editor as enhanced mode (no popups when pushing a bold button for example, just the appropriate tag is posted). And eventhough I think I said in the old forums that "I'm not gonna use quick reply anyway"... I am using it. As it stands, I type everything, and the only time I need to go to the actual editor box, is when I need some smiley thats code I can't remember just yet. All Hail the Quick Reply.

For now, but I'm sure in time that will change... well, maybe. It's so darn easy to add more emoticons and sprites in this software, that I do it often now :D It never hurts to have a wide variety to call upon to enhance your posts. :flagca:
even if new members start to join many of them will end up only posting for a week or two then disapear forever, as was a common occurance for members of the old forum (in fact i almost ended up like that  O_O )

New emoticons have been added!
:wonder: There have been a few times I've pointed out some emoticons for your approval, or asked you to add someone else's. Woudl starting an emoticon thread be more appropriate? :bouncy:
Locke Cole
08-06-2004, 07:44 AM
If emoticons you have recommended have not been added, I probably felt they didn't meet the standard I've been trying to keep to. I've sifted through over 10,000 emoticons easily, but I try to pick only the best. An emoticons thread in the technical assistance area would be suitable for requesting emoticons.

:D Great! You've made a lot of progress in a short time on the new boards. I'd just like to let you know that my original fears that I would sorely miss the old boards have been completely allayed. As you predicted, the customization, extra features, and ease of use have painlessly won me over. Thanks! :shades:

I figured it would, since I too did not want to let go of our old forums, however after using this software, was convinced it was time for a change. We were living in the past, forum style. :p

Hey Locke, I was wondering if there could be a section added to the boards.
If it's too complicated never mind but if ti can be done easily the it would be great.
The general section has always been fun but the thing is, it gets TOO general. And there are so many threads in that section that well...aren't too much serious. (I'm not saying that's bad, I'm just saying we should have a place in these boards where we can be sure to discuss things seriously)
But I ask you to add a new section where the discussion is way more serious. Kind of like a debate place or something like that but with serious discussions. It would be like our old thread of Intellingent discussion or the Philosphical thread. Only in that section we would be sure that it is going to be a serious debate.
it's just a suggestion I make It's up to you to decide if you think it's a good idea or not.
I ask for other people to give their opinion too.
Kyari

Well adding areas to the forums is no problem at all, however I'd need a category name, and I want to hear what others have to say about this. Don't want to make a new area if no one is going to use it.
The general area allows some of the rules to slip, like massive off-topicness, so creating a new area would certainly help keep topics on track.
BAMAToNE
08-09-2004, 11:35 PM
Perhaps we can have a "current events" topic that will cover more serious items like that Canadian radio censorship thread.
Zedie9
08-10-2004, 03:33 AM
:wonder: I like the idea of some serious discussions, but are you sure there'd be enough participation to warrant a whole new area? Then again, maybe Locke should go ahead and create it, and if there's not enough activity, he could always close it back down and move the threads back into other parts of the boards. :)
As for a name... well, the opposite of Other > General could be Other > Specific. ;) Or you could name it the Serious Area. That name alone almost begs for jokes.
On a related note, perhaps we could have an area for polls... Polls are fun (at least I think so :D), but not every poll needs a thread to accompany it. If there were an area, polls could be created and used exclusively for the vote. Probably a lame idea, but I'll throw it out there anyway. :bouncy:
Well, I can't say for 100% certainty that I would be joining these philosophical debates and whatnots, but it might work. Now Zedie has a point in there, would there be enough participation? There is really no other way to know than to test it out. Who knows, maybe even Giea and Flashfirer are closet philophers :p
And Zedie, you are addicted to polls :p
Locke Cole
08-10-2004, 07:57 AM
If you go over to the general section of the forums, you'll find a sub-forum has been created for serious discussions. Please let me know if you feel the posted rules need anything added to it. Enjoy.

:D What about polls? :spin:
I think an area just for polls is asking for abuse :p The poll itself should fit into one of our categories, or it gets dropped into the general area, plus some people may want to comment on their choice etc, if you make the poll you can always ask people not to post anything if you dont want them to. I don't think a whole new section is needed for polls.
